  It has been said that many lecturers lack teaching methodologies. What should be the minimum requirement when recruiting lecturers into a tertiary institution? Is it a masters degree or a PhD with a course in education??

  Professors in tertiary institutions must read GES directives. There are many important and useful GES directives which would help them.
  
  GES banned all forms of corporal punishment in Educational institutions but there are reports that some tertiary institutions are still carrying out this practice. Asking students to kneel down and so on.
  
  Lecturers in tertiary institutions must recognize the fact that students in these institution are adults.

  A statement issued to the GNA by Nana Akrasi Sarpong, the acting Director of Communication at the Ministry, said Dr. Spio-Garbrah, who spoke on the subject “Business, Higher Education and Employability” told the audience that the vacuum in relevant practical knowledge was because the education most African intellectuals and professionals received were totally unrelated to the natural resources around them and the fundamentals of their country’s economic production.
  
  He stated that the same general ignorance applied to simple processes such as the conversion of tomatoes into paste, cassava into starch, or cotton into textiles.
  
  The former Education Minister was of the view that until African countries got help from their own industrialists to change the curricula of their schools, especially in the secondary and tertiary sector, Africa will continue to produce graduates who will find a hard time finding jobs or starting their own businesses.
  
  He disclosed that having been Minister of Education and now working as Minister of Trade and Industry, he had become keenly aware of the total disconnect between what most African economies need and the knowledge content of graduates, most African schools and colleges were producing.

  He stated that a three-way consultation needed to be held urgently between governments, industry and academia to introduce a whole new set of relevant knowledge into the education curriculum, to ensure that graduates could become more employable or could begin their own businesses.
  
  “While governments, academia and the private sector could do a lot to bridge the yawning knowledge gap that made many graduates unemployable, there was a role for non-governmental organisations, such as the African Business Centre for Developing Education (ABCDE).
  
  Organisations like ABCDE could be among agencies that could initiate and manage a range of programmes to bring professionals and industrialists into classroom to help change the limited range of knowledge content most students are exposed to.
  
  Through internships, attachments, career counseling and guidance, industrial days, excursions, mentorships and other interventions, it was possible for entities such as ABCDE to bring the world of business and industry closer to classrooms,” Dr Spio-Garbrah urged.

  Thank you sir, I agree with you 100%, our one way educational system is not helping the country in developing, every body want a white colour job, how many offices are in the country for every body struggle to be there? We were having all the natural resources in the country, why haven't study how to process it and put into use? Look at China today, every product on our market are from there without having any single mineral resources over there. Let our focus be on the technical institutions and see how the country will move forward within a period of time.

  Relevant education does not imply that one would not be able to compete internationally. Mind you, there is nothing like international curriculum though this idea has been peddled around for a long time now.Every country constructs a curriculum that it perceives to be relevant to its economy and society or its needs.
  I share alot with Spio-Gerb's idea of relevant education though I have never been a minister of education. What I have is empirical observation and experience as data to back me up that Ghanaian education is not more relevant to our needs as a country. In this respect, Spio-Garb is getting real. However, I wonder why it took him that long to realize that.
