Who is more a dictator - Nkrumah or Lew Kuan Yew? Singapore was a one-party state, and it is still is, Lew Kuan Yew's political opponents were thrown into jail without public trial as most of them were branded communists to appease the West. Singapore's national TV and radio stations were at the whims and caprices of the government and the courts were rubber stamps of the ruling party.

Yes, under the one-party state, Lee Kuan Yew stayed in power for 30 years and now we see the results. One in six Singaporeans is a millionaire, yes, that's right! In 1965 per capita income in Singapore was a mere $512, but today income per capita is $33,000. Only 5 years ago, Singapore built the longest subway in the world. You can travel around the country underground without seeing the sky, not to mention, it is the most cleanest country in the world.

Is there a lesson here for we Africans. We accuse Nkrumah of dictatorship and call him with all kinds of expletives. Despite seven assassination attempts on his life, Nkrumah couldn't kill a fly. Oh how I wish Nkrumah would have beheaded JB Danquah, KA Busia, Tawia Adamafio, Ako Adjei et al, or confined them to rot in jail just as Lee Kuan Yew did in his country.

This is a joke. Don't even compare Nkrumah to Lee Kwan Yun. While Lee was focused trying to develop a small Island city with a population at that time less than one million People, Nkrumah has a grandiose ambition of being President of Africa and using our scarce resources to woo other Africa Leaders, 10 million pounds in 196 to Guinea and another 10 million pounds to Mali.

Lee was focused like a laser in developing Singapore whilst Nkrumah was globetrotting like a lost soul whilst our economy was tittering towards collapse. Our GDP was declining in 1966 when Nkrumah was deposed. The fact that both of them were Dictators does not mean Nkrumah would have achieved what Lee did.

You can compare Nkrumah to Castro of Cuba and Kim of North Korea and you will be right.

Lee like Nkrumah had their University education in the West, Lee in England and Nkrumah in USA but while Lee embraced capitalist ideas as the way to prosperity for Singaporeans and did not blame "imperialist", Nkrumah adopted socialist nonsense, Personal bodyguards called Republican battalion, Ideological institute to lobotomize young minds, etc.

Neither Castro nor the Kims of N.Korea have tried to spread their ideology to anywhere. Yes perhaps Nkrumah was over-reaching in some aspects of his focus BUT his intense NATIONALISM was undeniable. The so-called economic deterioration could easily have been reversed. Consider that even Rawlings had to make a U-turn when some of his socialist ideals proved less successful. No Nkrumahs overthrow was a catastrophy.
Think of it this way: Imagine overthrowing Mahama and the NDC right now because of the current transient difficulties without thinking ahead and knowing that JUST getting rid of the head of Govt does not SOLVE the underlying problems.
In fact if we were intelligent and nationalistic we will follow Kuffours Advice and make the presidency a single 7-year term starting from John Mahama. Why? Because currently the problems facing Ghana are Institutional and Structural. Imagine in less than 15 months all attention is going to be focused on wining the 2016 elections. This will require over $2 Billion (US) based on current estimates. So for the next 27-months very little is going to be done in terms of tackling some the overwhelming problems facing us.
How can this be sustained ?

In 1965 Singapore was beginning to crawl, Ghana was already flying. We had a nation that was the envy of many. Had your forebears not short circuited our industrial and economic Independence Ghana would be playing in champions league of world economics.

Talking about debt. Debt is as old as mankind. If you go by the Bible we are all indebted due to the sin of Adam and Eve. By the way, no nation is debt free. Even America the world's largest economy is riding on the backs of the Chinese with trillions of debt.

Great Britain was an IMF candidate throuhgout the 50's until early 80's so Ghana's $24million IMF loan which was even cancelled because Nkrumah exposed the the locust multi-nationals in his book; Neo-colonialism- the last stage of imperialism Shows that anytime somebody like Nkrumah is out there to tell the truth he will be silenced. Three months after the publication of the above book which America vehemently protested against Nkrumah was ousted. Nkrumah was ousted not because of the freedom of Ghanaians but he dared break diplomatic relationship with Britain. So his ouster was in best the interest of America and the West not Ghanaians as we were made to believe. Remember the bulk of investment in Ghana at that period in time was from the West. Investors don't invest where they don't get return for their money. The vast raw materials the West were importing from Africa for pennies were going to be affected had Nkrumah stayed on. So Nkrumah had to go but to detriment of Ghana and Africa.

Nkrumah and Lee shared similar visions for their respective Nations. The records show their comparing records at some point.

This shows how hypocritical this Danquah's protege is. If Nkrumah's dictatorship was the main reason for embracing his overthrow, wouldn't Nana have wished the same of Lee?

Now, the cat is out of the bag. I have always been alleging that the real reason behind Nkrumah's overthrow was not his dictatorship but on the local front, a personal personality clash between him and others like Danquah who thought they better deserved to be the Head of State of Ghana, and on the external front, the fear of spreading his Pan-Africanism to other Colonies to accelerate their Independence from the West.

So, the Ghanaian Opposition had to hide behind the Asantehene's genuine apprehension of losing complete control of his Empire again to another secular but native Government to propose Federalism that could never be, and treacherously cause mayhem in the country to eventually kill our dream for Economic advancement.

We have never heard Akufo-Addo condemn the dictatorship that thrived alongside Ghana's during Nkrumah's era in the Ivory Coast. Why?

The loud-mouthing to claim commitment to Capitalism and Democracy in Ghana by the UP/NLM of Akufo-Addo's idol politicians was all for courting the West to their side to help them get rid of Nkrumah.

The same Economic Plan that Nkrumah began embarking upon, was more or less, what Lee Kuan Yew adopted for Singapore and used his dictatorship to keep all Opposition away for him to accomplish them without interruption.

Nkrumah didn't have that luxury of enjoying a peaceful reign to get all his Plans seen through to the end. Thanks to the CIA-Danquah-UP/NLM collaboration. We should not forget and lie about the fact that Nkrumah's dictatorship lasted for barely 2 (two years)--1964-1965.

Now, Akufo-Addo sees any value in stable regimes that result in success like Singapore?

He seem like a phony, self-absorbing hypocrite at best!

What Nana Akuffo Addo should proudly add, and in fact the NPP ought to shout about in this matter, is the CORRECT policies adopted by Lee Kuan Yew which made the miracle of Singapore possible and evident. Policies which ran pari passu with the policies adopted by Ghana's UGCC and it’s descendant political parties in Ghana: The UP; PP; UNC; and currently the NPP.

Ghana’s UGCC and Singapore’s PAP political parties were both pro capitalist; pro free enterprise; pro freedom-oriented political parties. And both were unabashed anti-communists who shunned the distorted and always discredited communist mode of economic development. It is the free enterprise capitalist mode of economic development which has won the day.

Today, China; Russia; and other stalwarts of the discredited communist mode of development have all succumbed to free enterprise. Even Cuba has now allowed it’s citizen to establish their own barber shops!! Cuba is moving towards free enterprise mode of economic development.

Robert Mugabe’s Zimbabwe has adopted the mighty American Green Back as it’s currency!

Had the UGCC and its descendant political parties ruled Ghana, based on the policies enunciated, which policies are the same as Lee Kuan Yew enunciated and put forward in Singapore, Ghana would have been in a better place than it is now.

FREE ENTERPRISE CAPITALIST MODE OF DEVELOPMENT. That is the difference. Anything else is just mere propaganda and wishful thinking.

Since the announcement of the passing of Lee Kuan Yew, some Ghanaians have been trolling the absolute lie that, BUT for the glorious coup than ended the corruption and malfeasance of the Nkrumah regime in 1966, Nkrumah would have 'developed' Ghana as much as Yew did in Singapore. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Nkrumah and Yew were totally different in their approach to politics and path of development. Nkrumah studied in the West (USA) but returned to Ghana as a committed Communist who would adopt communist vehicle of development. Yew also studied in the West (Britain) and returned a committed Capitalist and Free Enterprise enthusiast who would use capitalist vehicle to develop his country.

Singapore was a swampland in 1959 when Yew became the leader. Ghana was a rich wealthy country when Nkrumah became the leader in 1957. When he returned to Singapore, Yew formed the People’s Action Party of the largely English speaking Singaporeans, and sought accommodation with the majority Chinese speaking people who belonged to the Communist Party.

Yew called this alliance, ‘the marriage of convenience.’ He was anti-communist to the core, but he need the initial support of everyone. PAP won the 1959 elections handily. And from then on, communism had no foothold in Singapore.

Compare that to Nkrumah’s. Nkrumah joined the freedom-loving, pro-capitalist, free enterprise party called United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC). Nkrumah left that party to help form/lead the Convention People’s Party (CPP) which won the elections handily. From then on Nkrumah subscribed to a Socialist/Communist mode of development.

Would the developed West which was Capitalist help the leader of a new nation who supported their mode of development; or support someone who was trashing their mode of development?

Lee Kuam Yew succeeded because he adopted Capitalist/Free Enterprise mode of development. The West, especially British Banks and businesses flocked to Singapore and engineered the miracle that is Singapore.

When Nkrumah was overthrown, thousands of tractors bought from the Soviet Union and other communist bloc countries with Ghana’s hard earned foreign exchange laid rotten.

The Soviet Union itself survived because it imported tons of wheat from the Capitalist USA.

So, please stop this useless ranting comparing Ghana to Singapore; South Korea; Malaysia; and other such countries whose GDP was much lower than Ghana’s.

Had Nkrumah adopted the right mode of economic development policies, Ghana would have been better off. By the end of 1965, Nkrumah was appointing members of Ghana Parliament; Ghana’s foreign exchange was zero; Ghanaians line up to buy whatever purchase they need for their daily survival, because stores were empty.

China learnt a lesson from the failure of the communist mode of development, and now China’s development track is firmly anchored in the Capitalist route.

Singapore is what it is because of sensible path to development.

In the last days of December 1999, American TV host Ted Koppel interviewed Lee Kuan Yew about the World’s prospects in the new millennium of 2000. When asked about Africa’s prospects;

Yew answered:

Africa wasted it’s time with useless Socialist cum Communist experimentations. He concluded, the path to sustainable development was through what had/has worked: Capitalist Free Enterprise mode of development.

Singapore like many third world nations at the time needed people with vision bigger than and despite of foreign characterization of what constituted good governance. With Lee's one man show (in Ghana the NPP and other wing nuts call it dictatorship) he transformed Singapore but Ghana’s league of hypocrites the likes of Nana Akufo-Addo, Kufour and others prefer to praise the likes of Lee resenting similar path taken by Nkrumah. Would Nana Akufo-Addo dare say Lee did not imprison agitators and or have people incarcerated under his watch through their brand or legal system? We cannot have it both ways in Ghana where we show contempt for socialism/communism and yet flock to strident communist nations to do our shopping and look to autocratic nations in the Middle East such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Turkey and others as our friends and yet have the shamelessness to say we did not like Nkrumah for being a socialist and or autocratic. We in Ghana had a similar thing going on in the 60's that was brought to a tragic end because Nkrumah did not detain enough thieves and saboteurs. Our development efforts were even more meaningful. Singapore is a city state without resources. We are a whole country blessed with unlimited resources and we had a very patriotic leader who was wise, honest, intelligent, incorruptible even more so than Lee Kuan Yew ever was. Yet you condemn Nkrumah and sing the praises of Lee Kuan Yew? When will the NPP folks ever learn politics of nation building? Ask any Singaporean and he will tell you that in Lee Kuan Yew's time people got detained for simply spitting on the streets. Is it any wonder that Ghanaians ease themselves on the streets of Accra? I become sick when persons like Nana Akuffo Addo when given the opportunity to speak is now praising the former PM of Singapore. If that country had opposition like what we are having in Ghana, they wouldn't be able to achieve all that they have done. The UP and NPP tradition should be ashamed themselves for being an opposition party in Ghana. They are group of people when they use you to achieve there aims then you are dumped like cassava. See what they did to Kotoka who was used to overthrow our greatest president ever and compare it with what as done to Asem Darkey, the limping in the MV Benjamin drug case
