As at now, in Ghana, if one needs a government job, contract etc, it has become partisan but more of tribal. Sorry we see ourselves as the most educated and possibly civilized in Africa.

Tensions rise over Chinese engagement in Kenya after restaurant’s co-owner said Africans posed security risk and needed to be kept out after 5pm

The owner of a Chinese restaurant in Nairobi that operated a “no Africans” policy has been arrested after media reports about the establishment triggered an outcry on social media.

Zhao Yang was charged with operating a restaurant without a valid licence only hours after the Daily Nation, Kenya’s biggest newspaper, published a front-page story about the restaurant.

Co-owner Esther Zhao told the newspaper that Africans posed a security risk and needed to be kept out after 5pm. “We don’t admit Africans that we don’t know because you never know who is al-Shabaab and who isn’t,” she said, referring to the Somali-based terror group blamed for a number of attacks in Kenya in recent years.

“It is not like it is written on somebody’s face that they are a thug armed with a gun.”

Staff were quoted saying the restaurant’s security detail were under strict instruction not to let in any Africans in the evening, although one or two “loyal customers” were allowed.

The story triggered outrage across the internet. Under the hashtag #noblacksallowed, Twitter users called for the restaurant to be shut down.

“I don’t understand how this article isn’t ironic. This can’t be real,” one reader, Aisha, said. Most commentators demanded the deportation of the restaurant owners.

“There is a proverb, loosely translated, which says ‘if you hate the cow, you should also shun leather’,” one said. “Let the Chinese go do this in China. This is Kenya, and if there is something they do not like, they are free to leave.”

Like most countries on the continent, there has been an extraordinary rise in Chinese economic engagement in Kenya over the past decade. Trade volumes have grown from $186.37m (£125m) in 2002 to $3.27bn in 2013, and the growing number of Chinese migrants has been accompanied by the mushrooming of numerous Chinese-operated restaurants and hotels.

Although many Kenyans have welcomed Beijing’s investment in major infrastructure projects including a new $5.2bn railway to replace the track built by the British more than a century ago, some Chinese have been blamed for a rise in poaching in the country’s national parks.

Zhao faces a prison term of 18 months or a fine of more than $1,000 if found guilty of operating the restaurant without a licence.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights called on any Kenyans who had been barred from the restaurant to get in touch because it planned to lodge a civil suit.

So who is playing the tribal card. We have problem with npp because we all speak the same language, which incidentally is understood by almost every tribe in the nation. Nonetheless, when the Ewes, Frafras, Dagombas, Ayigbes, and so forth tribes who make the chunk of Ndc go to meetings and speak their local dialect, who understand them? And who knows the poison they give to them about Akans? I tell you if all the meetings by Ndc with none Akan speaking tribes are published, you will agree with me that the "heart of man is desperately wicked" and that only God knows that and none else. I challenge Ndc to publish all meetings conducted in none Akan language, so we will know who they truly are. Osafo Marfo spoke the truth. It's an open secret. Who doesn't know that a husband and wife have intimate relationship, we all know but when ever we discuss it, it becomes a taboo. It so because, it is an open secret. So is What Osafo said. Everybody knows that is the truth, but we dare not mention it. If Ndc has a different version of what Osafo said, they must tell us. The resources are located in ..... Regions, but we have wrong managers and everything happening is a clear indication of what the man said. If you do not agree with this simple truth, I don't know what else you will believe. Truth is truth, no matter what, it can not be changed - the resources are located in Akan speaking regions, the Akans are the largest tribe in Ghana, the resources are being managed by non-Akans (but that is not the issue) the issue is that the present managers are bad managers. If they had been good managers, we wouldn't have any problem, but the fact that they are bad ones makes the whole nation look awkward and Akans are not happy about that when we know we can truly manage things well.

What he is saying is that, although the party has a majority Akan, it is not true that it is an Akan party. But do you know that even in the Ndc, the Akans are the majority voters? Do you know that all the Ndc votes from the three northern regions was not up to the votes they had in Ashanti region alone? When Kufuor's NPP ruled Ghana, did you forget the 99.2% Asante composition of his cabinet and the heads of all public entities in the country? Have you forgotten what happened to the Kurds in Iraq when Saddam Hussein's Baath Party was from one tribe only and not including any Kurds. Imagine if the Labor Party of the UK is made up of people from Ireland only. Ghana is multi-ethnic democracy: not an Akan-alone country. The NPP got into power in 2001 due to undermining of the electoral system by foreign embassies simply because they disliked the arrogance of Rawlings. He of all people knows that,the 'fix' is in to maintain certain privileged 'Princes' and 'Princesses of his Party in Parliament,while schemes are well-advanced,targeted at dissidents like himself[and Eng. Owusu Aduomi of Ejisu],so as to strip them of their seats!

The NDC have lots of explanation to do to Ghanaians why they've always supress Akan people, making sure they're subjected to abuse and molestation esp. when it comes to appointing high gov't or public positions; why they targeted Akan business people, by confiscating their businesses and properties; why they've always accused Akans of corruption while they're the very one who're neck deep into it? Be proud to be an Akan, just as Gas, Nzemas, Ewes, Gonjas or any tribe people would feel. It's that simple! Don't allow anyone to cause us to panic; it's all the mind games, that the NDC is trying to play here.

It's time for Akans to express our opinion and point out all the wrongs in our country. Tribalism is dangerous and inimical to Ghana's democracy and development. Unfortunately the NDC, as shrewd as they are have turned around to accuse the NPP as tribalistic while they're rather, the very one who're wickedly practicing it. People ought to be smart.

We should not forget so soon that not quiet a year ago that this same man cursed the candidacy of Nana Akuffo Addo and sworn that never in his life time would Nana be the President of Ghana.
