He then set up a government that could move the country forward without war and together. He had vision and the long term of the copuntry in mind. If he had not done what he did SA would have been in flames. He set up the framework for others to follow. If the ANC did not do anything progressive afterwards was it his fault. I dont think so. It is people like Another Thief in Bagdad that would have Africa in flames. I am sorry Mr Pratt or any of you could not do 1/100 of what mandela has done.   I was going to write an article to say things Pratt had said and go even deeper to explain why S. Africans were conditioned by the Apartheid regime to consider themselves as better off (under Apartheid) and superior to the rest of Africans, and brainwashed to look down upon Africans to the north. And there was much to use to brainwash them, as what is happening presently in SA is simply chicken feed compared to what was happening and still happens up north! 5 million people have killed in the Congo since the mid-90s alone. And there is not a day some Akans, fellow Ghanaians, don't threaten to deport Ewes to Togo! From their own ancestral homelands in Ghana???
  
  In fact, as pple have been mentioning, they don't even see themselves as Africans! All this conditioning under Apartheid was left intact by Mandela (the ANC elite) when he/they compromised and opted to keep SA out of the bigger African agenda for SADCC, paying only lip service to the OAU, while the Cape to Cairo plan of Cecil Rhodes was dusted and revived for implementation.
  
  Immediately Mandela was installed President, a consultancy was given out to advise whether SA should fully commit itself to the goals of the OAU and its structures or just play a regional role by becoming the bridgehead and industrial power house for finance capital. I personally knew the Norwegian who had the mission to write the Report and what it recommended. The chickens are just coming home to roost.

  Truth is Mandela made a deal with the whites. It was to give his people political power and not economic power. The thing was that, the help the whites who were losing their grip to hold on awhile, for the black, it was to give them a medium to call for a change. The problem here is, the blacks has failed to use their political power to change the status quo, thereby making things worse. There is no way Mandela would have come out without something of such agreement. Compare his leadership to Arafat and you will realize that Arafat got nothing for people through his political life because he wanted it all.

  Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia used to be like South Africa economically but Mugabe destroyed the country within ten years Zimbabwe became independent by adopting Nkrumaism. Ask yourself why Ghanaians are not running to Zimbabwe but South Africa. South Africa is economically successful because there has not been a capital flight by the White South Africans, the same policy Yew Kuan Yew adopted when Singapore became Independent.

  Mugabe has recently admitted his policy of seizing White farms has been a failure, because the black people he gave those farms to couldn't do anything with them. The contrast between Mugabe and Mandela is the same contrast between Nkrumah and Houphet Boigny. Whereas Houphet Boigny allowed the Whites to help him develop his country under free market system at independence, Nkrumah on the other hand drove the British away and embarked on socialism and Marxism as Mugabe is doing in Zimbabwe. The difference in development between Ivory Coast and Ghana, and between Zimbabwe and Ghana is there for everybody with a clear mind to see. If it was Ghana that went through the civil war like Ivory Coast did, Ghana would have been worse off than Somalia. The Westerners are oppressive all right, but you have to find a way to live with them tactifully to harness their technical ability for development purposes

  Good points by Mensah and Sarpong. Where is Zimbabwe today? A documentary by BBC and a book by Joseph Hanlon paints a very bright future. Soon after the land seizures, the outlook was bleak. Tobacco production went down from a record 247 million kg to 48 million kg. By the end of 2013 it had gone back up to 166 and still rising. Let's not forget two critical points, sanctions and the fact that the farmers were new to business. There was a steep learning curve to climb. Today a lot of them are very successful and are diversifying into other business ventures as disclosed by the BBC. A son of a farmer based in the UK returned to Zimbabwe to manage his father's farm
  New markets have been identified in Belgium and China. Your points are valid but that is succumbing to blackmail from the west. If land guards goes to an area and threatens those who don't pay protection money with violence and maim those who don't pay, I don't think you can say those who paid are doing the right thing. In the long term, justice will always prevail. Check out Hanlon's book.'' Zimbabwe have taken back it's land''

Hmmm, let's see, did Mugabe really say that or you just made that up as you go? Well, the correct phrase he put out there was "I think the farms we gave to the people are too large. They can't manage them,"
  
  Mugabe, was in fact, lying his expensive 91 years arse off both ways on this before the press because the 1980 Lancaster House Agreement on the land reforms were superb since it was an effort to more equitably distribute land between black subsistence farmers and white Zimbabweans of European ancestry, who had traditionally enjoyed superior political and economic status. The programme's targets were intended to alter the ethnic balance of land ownership.
  
  Those were the terms on paper, until implementation day, then all went quickly down south due to Mugabe's own doing by giving those lands to his cronies, party members and foot-soldiers who knew nothing about commercial farming hence leaving out the real farmers whose ancestors owned those lands and having at least a bit of experience working with the white Zimbabweans all their farming life.
  
  In Mugabe's wacky mind, leaving the lands in those farmers' hands could automatically register back in the possession of the whites who are already their masters anyway. A move that has cost Zimbabwean agriculture and once the food basket of the Sub-Saharan African dearly.

He succeeded in driving the occupiers away and taking land from the occupiers to his people, and the fact that the local people could not manage the land is irrelevant. The only policy gaffe in the whole transaction is not helping the local people or training them to be good farmers. Other than that, the goal of the political struggle was achieved. These black farmers will learn through their mistakes.
  
  Why do you expect a freedom fighter to lie in bed with his oppressor after sacrificing innocent blood to achieve this goal? Your reference to Ivory Coast is shameful indeed to say the least. Your question should be why there was a civil war in Ivory Coast in the first place but not in Ghana, and what influence does France still have over that country. In your analogy, Ghana should be like Ivory Coast isn't it? Have you ever lived in Ivory Coast? Besides the skyscrapers and paved roads in metro Abidjan do you know the squalor and shantytowns in the periphery of Abidjan? Have you compared the two countries income per capita in 2013? Ghana $3,500; Ivory Coast $1,014. Who says the whites helped Houphet Boigny to develop Ivory Coast? What is independence without control of your currency (economy)? Let me correct your wrong assertion that Nkrumah drove the British away. Nkrumah never drove the British away; they left soon after Nkrumah declared Ghana a republic and cut ties with the Queen. The British stayed in Ghana after independence but left en mass after Ghana became a republic in 1960, which meant Ghana was no longer a monarchy.
  
  One fallacy a lot of ignorant Ghanaians have been propagating over the years is blaming Ghana's economic problems on Nkrumah's socialist leanings. I find this backward and irresponsible, and in fact reckless. If we look at some of the prosperous countries in the world right now, I mean, countries with high income per capita, you can find them in the Scandinavian countries; Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, etc. - countries whose economic system is socialism to a large extent. The uninformed Ghanaian, so perilous in his thinking, and out of ignorance have always accused Nkrumah as a socialist. What is wrong with socialism. Yes, Nkrumah leaned toward socialism at the time, but in actual fact, he was a pragmatist but was shunned by the west through traitorous local and dissident attacks. Let's talk about the saboteurs and the true nation wreckers, not economic systems.

You might be right that 5 percent of South Africans might control the bulk of the economy but any harsh policy by Mandela would have resulted in capital flight.
  
  Mugabe tried the same thing and look at Zimbabwe now. Even in an advanced country like USA, about 5 percent of the populace control about 70 percent of the economy but they are the one who create jobs for the populace with their capital, the same as it is in South Africa.
  
  If Mandela would have done as Pratt is suggesting, you wouldn't have seen South Africa with their economic might that has attracted other Africans to that country. Read Mr Mensah comment above.

  This is used to seek the interest of the minority rich rather than the majority. The agreement with Mandela stopped him from taking land from the whites and this is stopping the fair distribution of wealth causing hardship to the black majority who are also looking for scapegoats to blame

  Even Mugabe has admitted that policy despite its good intention has failed. Free housing are being provided to the poor South African blacks and that is a good method of fair income distribution. The whites control the land but they are using it to provide jobs. With time, blacks will acquire capital and start buying these lands and maintain them to provide jobs for their own instead of seizing lands and parcelling them out for substinent farming that did not work in Zimbabwe.

In spite of the so called hardship that is being alleged to have been brought on the people of Zimbabwe there is no Zimbabwean in Ghana seeking greener pasture. However there are hundreds of Ghanaians in Zimbabwe enjoying the greener pasture there. I have relatives living in Zimbabwe and can tell the story of that country better than the illusions and mirages created by the western press.

It was the duty of the rest of South African's to now as individuals work harder for self liberation and self empowerment. Mandela could not change the mind set of the South African's. They had that mandate to change their mind, learn skills that will make them useful and upgrade their knowledge base for for political and economic empowerment. Freedom had to come any way and for me I think Mandela because it was a strong basis or foundation for the people to build upon. They must learn to educate their African mind to take responsibilities for their on situation and the power to improve same.

Why do we want to take over companies like MTN, DSTV,KRUGER NATIONAL PARK and others which are already owned by individuals or families. Most Farms and companies are owned by individuals or families not by the state. In America, APPLE, FACEBOOK, GOOGLE, TWITTER, AMAZON, DELL, MICROSOFT ETC are owned by individuals and not by the state.MANDELA did not leave anything in the hands of the Whites, those individuals owned those properties. To sumarize, there is still oportunity to create new farms, companies and many many prosperous avenues.   All that Kwesi means by Mandela living like a king in prison is that he wasn't treated the way Nkrumah treated his own political opponents. Just mention how J.B. Danquah was treated and Kwesi is going to give you a list of 'CRIMES' he committed and for which reason he deserved every bit of the inhuman treatment meted out to him.
  
  Indeed by the time Mandela was released we all saw the dignified manner in which he walked out. Compare that to how political prisoners who were lucky enough to have survived in Nkrumah's prisons looked like upon release.

Look a Zimbabwe for instance, Just after independence Mugabi set out to nationalize all companies and also initiated one party state. Where do we find that country now? He made the citizens realize think that they can live easy life without working for it. Mandela learnt from that mistake and kept the white south Aficans in the country . He tried to encourage the citizens to go for education. Have they listen to him so far? Which company would employ foreigners if there is available labor among the citizenry? If the South Aficans are qualified for those jobs why would the employers offer it to foreign nationals? . Kwesi Pratt before you open your mouth think carefully please.

  All the structures of that despised regime is still in place. Even those who maimed and killed black SA were pardoned via the Truth and Reconcilliation Commission.
  Just about two months ago one of such henchmen was freed after some paltry years in jail for killing thousands of black SA's.
  And,"they" made sure that we bear witness to his "accomplisment" with that extraveganza of a funeral when he passed for the ages.
  
  Question is, why are black people so forgiving of our haters? The "others" are not so forgiving. They make sure that after they send their haters into kingdom comes their progenitors would not even think, let alone, act on committing the same heinous crimes, ever again.That's vengeance and a deterrence, and folks , it works. Just ask the Germans.
  
  At any rate, I thank the African gods am not alone to think outside the proverbial box. I did admire Mandera -the personal sacrifice, nationalist a great African patriot,but he could have fully freed Africa from that yoke of colonialism and it's vestiges of supremacy if he had gone that "extra mile."
  
  I sincerely believe though,that Africa has a mandera curse and a winnie ecorcisation is needed to clean it up.
  
  I also pray that the African gods would continue to smile on us for we need a break to get rid of the cobwebs of ignorance and apathy blinding us.

  Mandela did compromise with the apartheid regime while he negotiated the terms of his release and the country's "post apartheid" transition. Most of his fellow prisoners were not privy to these terms and they angered them. The one person especially who was horrified was Mandela's then wife WINNIE who screamed "treachery," but she was pushed aside by the regime backed Mandela machine. They painted her black, charged her with trumped up atrocities leadibg up to divorce!
  But the real reason for the split between Mandela, Winnie and many former Mandela associates was the fact that Mandela not only sold out, but he forever compromised the economic and social well-being of future generations of Black South Africans.
  These were left still at the mercy of the white supremacists after a rather cosmetic independence.
  
  Now Black South Africans will have fight for economic and other emancipations from the racist South African regime which is solid and still thriving.
  
  The xenophobic attacks by sections of the populace are totally misplaced. They should fight for jobs and equality in their own country once again! They must effect real change through agitation and the BALLOT BOX!

  Mandela spent 27 years in prison. During that time, he was only permitted to access information that the apartheid jailers allowed him to access. ANC members who visited him were prevented from discussing serious politics with him. Even his family saw him from behind a glass door.
  
  Then all of a sudden, he became the centre of South African politics. Advice poured into his offices from all manner of persons, many of whom he could not have known personallly because he had spent 27 years in jail. The ANC in power was also torn betwen two lements -- those members who fought for the ANC at home and those who went into exile.
  
  It does not take too much imagination to see that there was political chaos within the ANC camp. How was Mandelas alone to deal with the chaos and also determine how to stop anti-African xenophobia? I dare Kwesi Pratt to plead with his NDC rulers to pout him in jail for just 7 months -- not 27 years -- and see whether he could cope with life after prison as well as he did before he went to prison!
  
  Mandela was only a human being with human capabilities. Only a superhuman could have dealt with the South African situation in a way as to prevent troubles breaking out after his retirement and death. Mandela was not a superhuman.

  Kwesi Pratt told the story as it is !
  I have in my collections,a DVD on Mandela which suggests what Pratt said. In the documentary,the wife(Winnie) debated him(Mandela) at a place that looks like Assembly Hall(just the two of them)up stairs, as great numbers of people (supporters) waited in the sun outside, in front of the Storey building, for a word of command from Mandela through their organizer(Winnie) to do whatever.That was within the early days of his released for confinement (prison).
  Mandela, having pledged his alliance to the Apartheid admin at meetings with the Transition Team unknown to the Wife, and had already made up his mind on where he belongs at that present time,and then caught up with the wife on a debate of cold-sweat, finally shouted on the Wife ;Winnie that his integrity was on test,or on the line with the incumbent.Winnie was disappointed and surprised,and saw Mandela a different man from what She knew him to be,and what he stood for
  So in short,one could safely infer from the DVD that the apartheid icon-Mandela betrayed his people for his personal comfort. The truth is only one and Pratt told the story as it is.
