If you are a Ga Im very sorry for you because these same Ga Chiefs of yours have cheaply sold out all viable lands in Accra, leaving the Ga people confused, poor and miserable.

All these infighting between the various factions is all because the Gas people were settlers on Akwamu land. The Akwamus were a very powerful state and they are the actual owners of the land that the Gas, who were fishermen from Nigeria just like the Hausa's who formed Zongos in every town , are now claiming is theirs.
When the powerful Akwamus fought the Dutch people and lost, all their men were enslaved and shipped out as slaves to the Americas by the Dutch. The rest of them fled across the River Volta to Akwamufie where they currently live.
After the Dutch left Ghana,the only people left occupying the Accra plains were the Ga settlers and they took advantage of the generousity of the Akwamus and claimed the lands for themselves. Secondly,the Akwamus had very few men left to fight the Gas for their land.
That's is the main reason why so many different Ga clans lay claim to the same piece of land in Accra.After the Dutch left, it was a free for all with regards to land ownership.In fact it was survival of the fittest because the actual owners of the land in Accra,which is the Akwamus, had all been shipped out as slaves and there was nobody there to get the land back.
The few Akwamus who were brave enough to return to their land have those Akan names.

The war between the Akwamus and the Dutch left a huge power vacuum which the Gas took advantage of when the Dutch left impromptly.
The chieftaincy of the Gas is rotated between the six 'Zongos' which the Akwamus allowed to settle on their lands.
It was the late General Kutu acheampong who created the confusion as to who should be the King of the Gas. He assumed Nii Amugi was the King of the Gas because he was King of Ga Mashie not knowing that there was a difference between Ga Mantse and Ga Mashie Manste.
The king of the Gas is actually rotated amongst the six houses but other people are trying to manupulate it for their own benefit.

He is the leader among equals of the six divisions I.e gamashie,tema, ,Osu, teshie, la and nungua.All these divisions have their paramount chief just like the gamanste of gamashie mostly known as the gamanste. Gamanste has no authority over the other ga paramounts.Gas form of government was based on akan system because gas traditionally did not have mantse but wulormor- the chief priest who was the leader thru the migration period. As to why there are names like ageman kese etc calling themselves gas is because in history desendants of some akans settled in ga put Nii behind their names and called themselves gas or became quarters (we) . Ga coatal area at that time was a big trading post with the Europeans and with tribal wars all around i think some flee to have that protection and Hope that gives you some needed history knowledge. The gamashie problem now is that they chose a not too liked leader some time ago during the npp era who was deposed. Now the deposed leader's faction want revenge. So it will become a cycle. Gas in history have never been a united force, generally lack self pride and are can be highly infilterated that is why to date the chiefs have sold all the lands, the language and culure are dieing. In my opinion, the best way forward for the nation would be to ABOLISH chiefstainship. They are the causes of almost all the disputes arising throughout the country. Ghana is no more living in the 13th. century, and the constitution must guide all to enhance the rule of law. We still live in a country where the chiefs sell the lands meant for the people, but when an issue arises, they all flock to the law courts, so the question is, what are the use of all those so called chiefs?

As far as Asante is concerned the govermental courts are not responsible.Infortunately we are not living in the great olden times where our ancestors established highly advanced systems of governance, built beautifully arranged townships and states and provided abundant wealth for its subjects. Today we are confronted with abject poverty and all kind of hardships caused by this silly colonial construct called "Republic of Ghana". No where outside Africa you will come across a centralized Republic built on foreign values, because its only suitable for colonial rulers. The so called developed countries are either constitutional monarchies or federal republics based on their own values.

This should tell people that there is an agenda from some sections of Ghanaian society to undermine the ga for their own selfish objectives which some of us know. Nii Latse is still in power and I propose that anyone who doubts it to come to Kaneshie and see forhimself/herself. A caution to all gamei; don't fall for this article at all. it is the work of some gamei who lost ground to Nii Latse and are bent or causing trouble at all times.

Tribes with no clear lines of succession often see violence from competing factions looking to install one of their members as the next chief/king. Absent a line of succession, violence will once again revisit when time comes for another king to be installed.
