Instead of the educated elite class dotting post secondary institutions across Ghana coming up with alternate viable solutions for student overuse of electric power, they chose to accept this cop out of an idea that will lead to the indiscipline on college and university campuses.
Would college administrators guarantee student meters monitoring electric current usage are calibrated and maintained each month so as not to rob students of their limited financial resources? Would administrators guarantee in writing to students that administration shall be liable for compensatory monetary damages should student prevail in the courts where it is proven that those meters are flawed and or inaccurately calibrated? Who will foot the bill for the install of the electricity meters? Has any administrator heard of sensors? Did they look to the feasibility of installing sensors that will trigger the turning off power to all electrical outlets in unoccupied rooms at buildings across campus?

Yes it is all true that with the advent of electronic gadgets electricity usage by students and or per dormitories/shared and common areas on school campus have increased but one would also expect administrators to review their electrical bills each month, quarterly or annually, compare billing amounts from year to year in years past to assess increases in room and board fees based on electricity usage trends. Going this logical route is different from asking students to pay utility bills; it does not happen in civilized nations where administrators are smart, innovative and above all have foresight.

College and university campus must be used to cultivate shared responsibilities, community involvement and values and above all loyalty to nation not only to acquire classroom knowledge. These administrators should look around Ghana and with a little soul searching will conclude that the moral decadence around us all come from failures at colleges and universities where cheating, abuse and misuse of women, cronyism, tribalism are mastered along with book knowledge but little logical thinking processes and less entrepreneurial spirit

If the answer is yes and it was the legacy of what the leadership at the time of his education left him, the least the leadership of present day students expect is the leave the same legacy for them, if it cannot be improved, so they can also finish their Uni in peace, not make it worse for present day students. That is what is referred to as positive legacy.
Students paying for utility bills would not and never be in the equation when it comes to tertiary education.
Even the US is looking at how to streamline and manage the issue of students loans which right out of school for most graduates, puts them in debt, like a mortgage for 30years, which they have realized has become inimical, and this is the world's biguest economy.
Instead of the Mahama NDC gov't tasking it's numerous appointees to loot and bring a certain percentage into their party and for themselves, they should desist from the monstrous thievery, set up a fund, and invest that percentage they are looting for themselves and their party for the payment of utility bills, because no student is going to pay a single pesewa in this country.

Nobody will pay a single pesewa. When the Mahama NDC gov't learns to be responsible, and have the presence of mind to stop thieving the national purse with it's family and friends looting brigade, and create the environment for job creation, which increases employment, raises the GDP, makes loans affordable, businesses flourish, students can get jobs to do in between school breaks that pays handsomely, their parents are employed instead of being rendered redundant, then we can talk about responsibility and payment of utility bills.
It is a two-way street.
The Mahama-led NDC gov't learns to stop thieving, the students will learn how to pay bills.
Heck, they might not even have to pay at all, but rather right after school, they can tap into the funds saved from the irresponsible stealing of the Mahama-led NDC gov't and set up their own businesses and employ other people, including the students who will be in school. It becomes a win-win situation, but it starts from somewhere.
When the Mahama-led NDC gov't has no vision, recklessly theft-prone and irresponsible and see thieving the national purse as governance, they kick the can on the implementation of any such policy further and further down the road.
The Mahama-led NDC gov't being responsible by desisting from stealing would make the case for talking about any such measures and until then, no student, no student will pay a single pesewa in this country.

The Ghanaian must demand of the people in power to pay for their utilities as they are asking the students to pay! Those in power have learnt a bad habit from their school days and this cycle must be broken.

Where I am, if you do not pay the bills for your utilities, you shall be left in the cold and in the dark; there is nothing you can do about it until you pay. You do not pay, you do not get service, and regardless you are a Student, a Parliamentarian, a Congress man or a Senator. Ghana must apply that no pay no service principle and Ghana shall be okay.

The catch here is, the service is available where you are and therefore paying for it is not a problem, because the availability of the service has created a situation where, you can engage meaningfully and meet your responsibilities, which can in no way be compared to a situation where, the service is not even available and you are being asked to pay.
I believe where you are, such a situation would mean a state of primitiveness and nobody in their right frame of mind where you are, would think of paying for any such kind of service, let alone countenance such a state of affairs.
It is called mutuality-a beneficial engagement that benefits both parties.
So you make a valid point, by throwing in this other fact that, Ghanaians must demand of the people in power to pay for their utilities and i would go further and reiterate my earlier statement from the preceding posts, that the platform should be such that, paying for that utility should and can be justified.
You cannot go on a limb and say pay for it, when the platform and the conditions to pay for it are not there, and that is where the recklessness of thievery comes in.
Provide the service fully 24/7 till the end of time and we can talk about paying for it.

Students in tertiary institutions must learn and learn quickly since they are the same that will be leading the country in a few years. Paying the bills and on time is a responsible behavior. Do not spend what you do not have in advance, so you are going to learn to be prudent and thrifty.

Ask folks in the USA to see if the Government pays for the utility bills of students. You take loans to pay for it and then you pay back the loans when you start working.

Ghana should learn and learn quickly.

Nobody should be getting freebies except in rare cases. Ministers must not get freebies for personal usage either.

Free education must be for only elementary through high school for those that cannot afford.

If the government think this is a good move, then all scholarships for any part of the country except elementary education should be withdrawn. This should include that freebies for those up north.

They just desire mass suicide of workers by breaking our necks with more heavy burdens on our children at school. President Mahama has made us to understand that he is a dead goat who does not fear knife and will do anything he wants even if those who put him there complains.
Is this the attitude of his late boss, Professor Mills. The late president was more concerned for the ordinary person and that showed in his actions and decisions. He was slow but far better than Mahama in every aspect of leadership. Ghanaians said they did not want him and allowed Mahama and his cohorts to kill him to take over the mantle of leadership, to implement their wicked agenda to steal the people of Ghana and put them into hardship.
I hope the people of Ghana have become wiser now except those iliterates who dont think on top of their head.
