We need to adopt a more scientific approach to deal with the drainage issues of our cities, towns and villages

As far back as 1969 Kofi Busia had started a comprehensive program to deal with the perennial flooding of ACCRA. What happened to that project?

Many thriving cities the world over are located in the pathways of many great rivers. London (thames), Frankfurt (Mainz)are but a few of cities on rivers.

A little bit of thinking and better use of the bulldozers will help.

Accra needs a proper sewer system. Proper covered underground drains to prevent people from dumping rubbish into them. The laws also have to be enforced to prevent people from building on waterways.

Their maladministration, incompetence and inability to effectively manage town planning schemes has created a dangerous situation that has killed and displaced many people and destroyed many properties from natural disasters.

So not being satisfied with that, they (the NDC) also have to cause more mayhem and carnage by destroying the same properties which they allowed to haphazardly spring up everywhere, thereby causing more displaced people, suffering and avoidable deaths.

So isnt there at least just even one single human being in the whole NDC who can think?

Some prophets predicted the events of the year focusing on human beings or national figures and what they thought could happen to them, scaring and badgering them and everyone else. We thought they did that because that was the best way to gain access to their wealth. But now I think because we challenged the veracity of their claims, they hid from us the most important warning they could have given us regarding rain storm and fire and the attendant massive loss of life. We are now to blame because the so-called wise ones among us challenged these holy men who in turn hid these all important prognostications about rain storm and loss of lives, to our detriment.
These prophets are there for our good in such situations, even though they are clearly not of God. Perhaps we should manage and call them secretly, privately, the evil agents of Satan - and never openly.

I did witness the massive flood at the Ga West area,in fact it was Horrible. Demolition of the houses around that area is a good idea.And the gutters need to be reconstructed well for easy passage of the water.

These arrogant bush dwellers are all aware of their illegal purchases, but they have developed this warped mentality that if you quickly and illegally erect a structure anywhere in Accra, you can find a few semi-educated people to rant and rave about displacing the poor, hence we must allow society to perish along with these people. WHY? Black people WHY, can we have one single Black African country completely devoid of lowlifes and subhuman activities.
Meanwhile there is so much land and fertile land in the countryside and villages, yet without a job, with no money these parasites simply want to converge on a developing small city and crush it to death. Wicked mean spirited people, it's like if they can't make it we all must surfer. Imagine these 2 sick people above me, who can read and write perfect English, yet lack the ability to think like the very White people they are trying to emulate.

Most of them trained abroad in countries where politics works and they've got degrees from any field you care to imagine but have learnt nothing! After Nkrumah the country has been retrogressing in every department. Everything is centered in Accra and the towns forcing a large proportion of the population to decend down to these places to find jobs and maybe taste a bit of modern life they dream about but denied them in living in their villages. People sleep in the streets in Accra, in kiosks and in all manner of make shift accommodations including big GUTTERS around Nkrumah circle! Accra has become OVER populated. Most of the menial workers around the city centre have no known address. Can any honest politician really express any astonishment at the level of devastation this disaster has wrecked on Ghanaians? As much as I hate saying this, the next disaster waiting to happen will be at SODOM AND GOMMORAH! The politicians know it is a matter of time. At the moment they're all hoping it does not happen on their watch.
Folks, that's how much they love this country and the people they're elected to serve.

When you disturb the natural balance so that the pendulum swings violently to the one side leads to disasters such as the Accra floods. Ghana is not the only country that experiences this. Flooding is unavoidable natural phenomenon that occurs when a lot of rain falls within a short period of time, there is rapid accumulation of water which cannot be handled by the storm drain systems. When the storm drain system is non existing or poorly designed as is the case of Accra, then the rate at which the accumulated water is emptied into a catchment area is slow leading to prolonged stagnation. This stagnation saturates the soil in it vicinity leading to structural damage and then collapse of houses, buildings, bridges and roads.

We have disturbed the natural order by poorly planning the city. Houses are thrown every where. There are no building codes. We don't need to invent one just copy from the codes I from ISO. The city should hire Geologist, Geographers and Civil Engineers to redesign the drainage system. I believe BRRI did a lot of work. They have the expertise. Use them.

There should be a department of drainage and public safety within ACC whose job function is to unclog, maintain existing drains, supervise the construction of new drainage. systems.

Example underground drainage system, starting first at most affected areas and then extending it later. We should also cover the coverts to avoid refuse being thrown inside. Areas affected should be given to institutions or the rich people who can develop it rather than to the poor who don't have the financial resources.

I am not an engineer though so please don't be technical with me. This is a job that requires proper planning and technical input and that is not the job somebody like me sitting my "somewhere".

That is the job of National and Local government.

Learning from other countries is not "tooknown".

The generally held view that the Accra floods are caused by houses in waterways is a myth. I have not seen any structures on the Odaw "gutter" but it is choked to the brim with garbage and filth.

We must do a little bit of thinking than insulting if we can move our country forward.
