  Defilement sentence should be at least 20 years. These lenient sentences can not serve as deterrent to other men out there.

  Unfortunately some judges give only 7 years, the minimum. A 35 yr old man who got married to a primary school girl (14 yrs at the time) defiled a 13 yr old girl. Judge sentences man to only 7 yrs in jail. Case happened at the Dormaa Ahenkro circuit court in 2014.
  Rather unfortunately this man had been doing similar things in his village without any fear becos the villagers feared the man would use "african juju" on anyone who took him to court. The myth was broken when one bold young man took him on. The wife of the man (primary school girl) cried her heart out when the sentence was pronounced becos she was going to miss her husband for some time. The 13 yr old defiled was not too satisfied with the 7 yrs. she preferred at least 10yrs when interviewed
