Accra, being the capital of the nation should be free of so many slums. Popping up slums in Accra is an eyesore which should not be entertained no matter what the situation. Also, slums breeds nothing but social vices.

Accra, being the capital of the nation should be free of so many slums. Popping up slums in Accra is an eyesore which should not be entertained no matter what the situation. Also, slums breeds nothing but social vices.

That said, a Ghanaian has the right to live anywhere in Ghana but his/her presence in that area should be a burden on those who live or have lived there for years.

The demolishing of Old Fadama is good in the sense that the area is rife with all the vice going on in Accra which is not good. I remember Kufuour was trying to relocate them but then the opposition party (NDC) used it as a campaign message to demonize NPP so, who is to be blamed?

Those who have been displaced should go back to their towns and villages because that is where they came from and I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

Hmmm, this a serious matter. Sodom and Gommorah had to be demolished. Papa Jerry should be the first to blame. He located them to Accra after the Kokomba-Nanumba war without any plan for construction. Others joined and as you rightly said, without skills and professions, all forms of deviant behaviors in Accra and her environs became headquartered there. It was not easy to be at certain parts of the area when darkness begin to fall. Relocating them became a brave political decision that was difficult to take. Because of the crime that went on there, no part of Accra want them settled near them. That is why the government was left with no alternative but to ask them to go to their hometowns. It would have been appropriate to acquire a land(if possible outside Accra) and asked them to build according to a certain plan and settle them there.
For the young ones, let me tell you that a similar thing happened at Koforidua during the time of Kutu Acheampong. The Old Zongo community had become an eyesore where all kinds of social vices took place there. It was really a very dirty place in the center of the regional capital.
Minyila who is a Northner and the regional minister acquired a land for them, gave them a building plan and lay of the new Zongo. He then gave each family money to build according to the plan with streets. They took the money, bought trotro, made AYEFRO everywhere. When the time for them to move came close, he warned them. they did not heed. One fine early morning, he led a demolition team and the area was razed to the ground except the central mosque. Many became homeless but Minyila did not budge. He warned them again that if they do not build the area according to plan, he would raze the buildings down without any compensation. Now, the people complied and Koforidua can boast of the best and well planned Zongo in West Africa. Minyila is still remembered and respected for that bold decision. Let the people of Sodom and Gommorah cry against the demolition now. Ghanaians, the people of Accra and its environs and some of the affected people will thank Oko Van and Mahama for the demolition of the area.

All of us in Ghana that time who know the history are very much aware that JJ never,not even verbally let alone officially relocated anybody to Old Fadama.These people were displayed by the war in the north forcing them to move to Accra and since there was a large number of their people already living there,they identified with them and settled with them and those who didn't move that time continue to follow them even after everything was over and they continue to multiply.
President Rawlings or his government never relocated anybody to Accra.

This article in the first place is stupid coming from one of the idiots who should know better.
In the first place the people living there are not 60,000, not even close but this clueless guy with this lies of driving to Old Fadama to deliver a cell phone wants to fool people that we had that number of people living there to score cheap political points.

Papa Jerry had good intention of making sure that they left that war ravaged region. You very much know how barbaric the war was. Yes, I know the war was barbaric because I was caught up in it.
The government had a hand in it other than that they could not have built that Ghetto without being stopped. The area was wired mostly illegally and had water. This could not have easily gone on at the time Papa J.
Besides, the people of the North have a closer relations with Ashantis than the people of Accra. Sodom and Gomorrah would definitely have been at Kumasi, Ejura or Mampong or Ejusu but not Accra. Why did Papa J of all people allowed S&G to develop and did not pull the place down when they started to establish it. You remember he pulled a couple of buildings at other places down because they were put at wrong places in Accra. Anyway, he did not ask them to practice those deviant lifestyles that made the place and the people that lived there unpopular in Accra.
I am still among those that are happy the place was pulled down and not resettled as a group anywhere in Accra. When they are separated and do not live as a group, the criminal and illegal activities that many of them were involved in will greatly reduce. I am full of praise for Oko and Mahama for that bold action which previous administrations shied away from.

Just turn your eye on the TETEQUASHI exchange where this thief dolled out most part of the land to foreign Italians and his daughter where his daughter put up some KIOSK called a shopping center which results have created unprecedented mishaps and unnecessary traffic to the area and leading to the Motor way. In the first, these people did not buy the lands or plots from anybody or group of persons before putting up such eyesore structures - that means they are trespassers and it's against land act. Secondary, majority of these dwellers are not Ghanaians but with our weak and corrupt immigration system, they were able to come through our borders without any check.(Ecowas Nonsense).

You made mention about Liberians and others who were settled in Ghana during their refugee period through United Nations. That is true, but they were not settled in Accra but somewhere in Central Region with the help of United Nations. Government of Ghana could not have coped with such situation without the assistance of United Nations.

The dwellers in Sodom/Gomorrah are not refugees. They made their journey to seek greener pastures as some Ghanaians and other nationals travelled overseas do. You have to know who will accommodate you before such journey is made. Beside that and in most countries, governments do not accommodate its citizens when they are moving around in their own country. There is neither discrimination nor tribalism in this exercise. They have to blame themselves for trespassing for such fate to befall on them and not to blame the Government. There is no wrong doing on the government's action. E&OE.

Sodom and Gomorrah should not have been there in the first place or at least temporary. Successive governments did nothing because now there was a lot of political capital. Plans for accommodating them in order to move have been in place for years and again nothing was done.

While I agree that things should have been done better the reality is that for all of this talk of moving them the only way this was going to be accomplished is when a devastating event like the Flood/Fire set in motion action and while also giving them a "beyond their control" type reason to justify this action.

No one is making an argument that it will solve the flood situation but it is a large step in making it so.

Demolishing Sodom and Gommorah is a step to prevent flood, however, but, there should have been an alternative way to accommodate them for the mean time. I hope the place cleared wouldn't be earmarked for some selfish ambitions of these greedy politicians Ghana have.

The original planning was supposed to be green spaces around those Korle lagoon areas. These areas are to flood first when the rains come instead of paying millions to install flood pumps and other infrastructure. Countries around the world do this.

It is not government responsibility to house squatters living in unhygienic environments full of criminals. They resident gave choked the biggest water way into the sea in Accra so no wonder they demolished the place.

I feel like the government should go after more squatters in Accra though. They will fare better elsewhere but living like dogs in Accra is not good

If one can go to a place and asked to pull his big stick to free himself in the open as they do it everywhere in Ghana , and he thinks it is ok , then we have a problem as a nation because even someone like Atta who should know better does not know nothing.
Nobody says the demolishment of the place is the best at this time but if we wait till the whole area becomes a city with a million people how do we get them from the place to develop the place.
To me anybody who is trying to make a case about this demolished old fadam is just lost it.
At our devlopment as at now we must not allow such things to go on when we know it does not bring anything good out of it but ills.
I think Atta, must start to think to know that those who died during the 3june flood died because of the foolishness of those who should taken the step to correct the stution long time but were playing politcs with lives.
Talking of Kufour abd the Alago gutter is one of the foolishness of those who are put in a place to stand firm and act but playing politcs wuth what must be done right.

You need knowledge to write certain articles and secondly more knowledge to be a town and country planner.The area in question is an area where after the tropical rains is always flooded and no one must live there.Look at Holland ,they have canals but most of the land is under sea level.There are too many buildings and without good planning then nature will claim what belongs to it.After the tropical rains if the water cannot sink down then it will spread and cause this problem.Big canals and green areas must be created so that excess water can flow into the sea.

This is the most foolish, senseless and the highest level of ignorance and dishonesty to human a columnist can put out there.
The whole article shows the level of ignorance, shabbiliness, and kind of orientation we had as human and we should learn as a people if we want to grow and stop been dishonest.
I as a northerner, is in support of such demolition and will not be naive as the columnist want as to be. People should see as people who deserves better than this and understands that we are not toys to be playing with. In the first place, we are not the only residents there, people from all walk of life are there so why this nativeness and dishonesty ?
