Kwaku, the Doctors are using bullying tactics in negotiation and that position is untenable to take in negotiation. The President is right in responding to their bullying tactics. I applaud him for putting his political life on line and taking a principled stand.

No one here is saying that these Doctors should not get a better end of service assurance. The fact is that, all civil servants deserve better conditions of service and end of service benefits, the medical doctors should not be treated any different. The President is right about not disturbing the Single Spine System by the demands of these Doctors. The negotiations must be in good faith and any agreement made should not open a flood gate for other civil servants to emulate the tactics of coercion these Doctors are using in their "negotiation". The State will pay a heavy price if we let these Doctors have their way with the intimidation and coercion tactics. Already others are emulating or thinking about it.

By the way, how is the President to approve of any exorbitant added cost which has not been budgeted for? I salute the President on this one.

There is no civilized nation, not even in America where freedom of speech and or association originated, that would tolerate an organized strike by a profession or trade group deemed or designated as essential to the health, safety and security of a nation. They should continue with the strike, whiles the innocent citizens continue to die at the hospitals and if we cannot take this nonsense anymore we the citizens shall come for them in their various homes. The unyielding stance by President John Mahama not to pay a dime beyond what has been budgeted for as wages, allowances and salaries for public sector workers has angered striking doctors and allied health service workers.

Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr Justice Yankson has refused to comment on the president's latest remark except to say "I will respect my person and will not get into a banter with the president."

He would rather go into petty trading than be forced to return to the consulting room without acceptable conditions of service.

Addressing members of the Ghana Registered Midwives Association, GRWA at the launch of their 80th anniversary in Accra, president John Mahama said "Any agreements that are reached in respect of allowances or conditions of services would have to be appropriately captured in the budget."

"And I want to say for emphasis I will not authorize any expenditure on wages and compensation not provided for in the budget."

He does not want to break the spine of the Single Spine Salary Structure.

But the doctors are unfazed by the president's position on the matter. If anything, they are angry and have decided to carry through with their strike and possibly mass resignation.

Dr Justice Yankson told Joy News Matilda Wemegah they will withdraw emergency services on August 7, 2015 as they intensify a one-week strike action which has seen them withdraw OPD services.

They are preparing to resign en masse if their demands for conditions of service are not provided. In a move that will leave patients on bended knees, resident medical officers and house officers at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital have, after emergency meetings, today, given their full backing to the striking doctors.

They are also threatening to join the striking doctors.

The House officers normally handle minor cases in the absence of the doctors.

Meanwhile, labour expert Mohammed Affum has chided the president for the comment he made.

"If the posture of the president continues a lot of lives will be lost," he said on Joy FM's Top Story with Evans Mensah.

It is not done anywhere in the civilised world where a group of workers decide to hold the country to ransom incessantly. For goodness sake are Ghanaian workers the only people on planet earth who face difficulties? Even Greek workers who are in a much worse situation do not resort to strike action. They understand that the difficulties they face are not caused by any particular individual or government. They also understand that the only way their country can pull out of the situation is by pulling together and working in unison with their government. Assuming the government obliges and succumbs to the doctors' demands then what next? Its going to create further imbalances in other sectors of the economy leading a sequelae of further problems for all Ghanaians. Is that indeed what we want as a people? What about a little bit of personal sacrifices for the betterment of our common home? I give the president the thumbs up for courageously standing up to these crazy demands. What about the real heroes of our economy who toil day in day out to feed all of us? Would doctors spare a thought for their plight? Doctors must understand that they are a very small minority of the entire population of Ghana who already enjoy a disproportionately higher portion of the national cake and demanding anymore is not only unpatriotic, it is inhumane and insulting to the intelligence of the rest of Ghanaians. Nobody is denying doctors or any other professional group their legitimate earning potential but we cannot have this perennial merry-go-round and expect our country to progress. That chain must be broken at some point and I am glad the president has taken the first step towards ending this nonsense. When our country becomes richer we can all enjoy the benefits. Where on earth have you heard of doctors embarking on an indefinite strike? This is insane and must be labelled as such. Learn to call a spade a spade Dr Baah!
