While I agree that the participation of women in governance should increase to be proportionate to their representation in the population, I disagree that the process should not frown on merit.If that were to happen, then governance will become the sacrificial lamb for this goal to be attained. Rather, the process should include equal access to education, mentoring, etc.
James Brown sang it best: "I dont want nobody to give me nothing, just open the door, and I'll get it myself". I would feel insulted, as a woman and a feminist, to be preferred over a male for any position merely because of my gender rather than for my abilities.
I do not support this call for affirmative action as it's utterly antithetical to advocacy for gender equality

Just look at the numerous women in parliament who we hardly hear from making any serious contribution,it is like we don't have women in parliament which I don't think is because we don't have affirmative action is the reason.

Oye Lithur should get lost with that nonsense,she should advise her colleague women to work hard but not to wait for manna to come from heaven.

The issue of gender equality and representation in the decision-making process is not an issue.
There is no inequality or discrimination in the decision-making process. It is one of choice.
Representation of the people whose mandate you seek to govern them cannot be by affirmative action. It actually even defeats the purpose of true representation as process emanating from the express and bonafide decisions of the people.
It smacks of imposition and Lithur, Oye should know this, it is basic more so when, all powers of the state and decision-making have been vested in the President, and thus creates the platform for cronyism and patronage breeding sycophancy at the expense of true representation of the masses in the decision-making process.
Affirmative action therefore does not become the antidote to such perceived inequality and discrimination if it exists at all.
Representation of the people in the decision-making process emanates from the sovereignty of the governed and maybe Lithur, Oye would want to focus her attention on how to win that debate at the level of the governed instead of seeking an imposition via the clause of affirmative action, an anathema to the very tenets of true representation in the decision-making process.

We must strive for equal rights for the women and not the affirmative action. The affirmative action is actually a reverse discrimination and any form of discrimination is bad.
We women can compete on any level with the men.
