  For the initiated, lakh is a unit of counting in the Indian sub-continent. One lakh is ten thousand. So Mr. Essien was acquitted of defrauding someone of hundred thousand of whatever currency involved. Probably, rupees.

  The Indian High Commission in Accra used to be full of teenage boys requesting visa's to visit India. Most were illiterate and needed help to complete the application form. What they thought they were going to do in India if they were ever granted a visa I don't know.
