What about Lord John Hope, the Under Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations who introduced the Independence Bill and moved for its approval in House of Commons?

Yes, what the Duchess came to then Gold Coast to do was a mere formality and once the Bill received Royal Assent and became an Act of Parliament, the rest were mere formalities.

The fact still is that after the formalities in the UK and Ghana, it was Nkrumah that publicly declared Ghana independent at midnight on March 5, 1957. No one can change that because these are records of facts in both Ghana and the UK.

I had endless arguments with teachers who used classrooms as political play grounds and refused to teach syllabus and hence cost many students valuable grade points.

Lectures and teachers like Prof. Mike Ocquaye have done irreparable damage to our educational system just because we worship people with names and have allowed him to carry on without challenge.

The Duchess of Kent as protocol required had to witness the flying Union Jack come down and in its place the Ghana flag Red gold and Green with black star in its place. The young Queen Elizabeth was spared this humiliating ceremony which was the first of its kind in sub sahara Africa and therefore had to hand over to the Duchess of Kent to save her face. Otherwise the Queen had to take the Union Jack back to Britain herself marking an end to British rule in Ghana. How embarrassing?!The British elegantly avoided a glitch. K A. Busia: His Politics of Demagoguery, National Disintegration and Autocracy (Part I).

Dedicated to Boye Moses, the Deputy State Security Officer, who was put in a cage and dragged through the streets of Accra in the aftermath of the CIA inspired Coup in 1966.

Dr. K.A. Busia has often been projected as the champion of democracy in Africa by the Danquah-Busia acolytes in Ghana, Eurocentric Ghanaian intellectuals and pro-apartheid forces of the world. However, Busia’s pre-independence actions and his government’s policies between September 1969 and January 1972 clearly expose him as the most demagogic and undemocratic politician and political ruler in Ghana’s political history. This is confirmed by his ethnic politics and/or politics of demagoguery, his national disintegration schemes, his arrogant repeated refusal to accept and recognize Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s CPP victories, and his violent campaign to overthrow the democratically elected government of Nkrumah. Additionally, Busia’s despotic rule is evident by his ethnocentric polices such as his summary dismissal of selected top public administrators (mostly Ewes), popularly known as “Apollo 568.” His cruel deportation of the so-called aliens (mostly Yorubas) from Ghana in 1970 and his total contempt for the rule of law (Sallah’s case) also attest to his iniquitous and dictatorial rule. His call for detente in opposition to the armed struggle against the apartheid system in South Africa, at a time when the unlawful apartheid government had repeatedly defied all the UN resolutions for a peaceful dissolution of the racist system, was a disgrace to Ghana.

Busia was, perhaps, the most regimented apostle of Edmund Burke’s political philosophy and ideology among Ghanaian politicians. As pointed out in my third article on Dr. J. B. Danquah, Burke’s political ideology was rooted in Plato’s ideal democracy. Accordingly, a perfect democratic society is where the citizens are divided into three rigidly defined classes, each with different obligations and thus a different education. At the apex of the social structure are the few pre-ordained rulers, a highly educated elite who must occupy the top positions in government to direct the affairs of the society. Beneath them are the university dons and the executive class (comprising the top echelons of the military and police forces, and the civil service). At the bottom of the pyramid are the working class, food producers, artisans, craftsmen and technicians who, according to Aristotle, should all have been slaves. Eventually, Plato’s form of “democracy’ was ideally fashioned into the philosophic theory of the British colonial rule. This explains why the members of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) were composed of lawyers and merchants; it also explains why Busia quit his teaching position at the University of the Gold Coast to form his own political party, the Ghana Congress Party, to replace the UGCC, which collapsed after the CPP victory in the 1951 election.

Nkrumah, in his bid to form a national government in 1951, invited many of his bitter enemies and Dr. Busia to become members of Nkrumah’s cabinet. Though Busia had been defeated in the municipal election in Wenchi, he was the only invitee who turned down the invitation (Timothy). Dr. Busia’s brother was then the king of Wenchi.

Dr. Busia’s Attempts at Sabotaging Ghana’s Independence. 1. Immediately after the CPP won a decisive victory (72 out of 104 seats) in the 1954 general election, the Opposition led by Busia went into the offensive by agitating for a federal form of government.

2. Four members of the Legislative Assembly, two of whom represented Kumase constituencies, invited Busia and other leaders of the NLM to discuss the federation matter at a roundtable conference. But they turned down the invitation saying that it did not come from the government. Nkrumah then sent two separate official (government) invitations to them, and they turned down both invites.

3. Amidst the firing of muskets and the singing of Asante war songs, Bafour Osei Akoto, the Okyeame of Asantehene, ritually slaughtered a sheep to signify the birth of the National Liberation Movement (NLM), of which Busia became its political leader (Bing). The anticipated Ghana’s independence in 1956 as promised by the constitution was thus halted by the birth of the NLM in the Asante Region.

4. The backing of the Asantehene of Busia’s NLM was accompanied by the swearing of the Asante oath. Henceforth, the “chiefs and elders would arrive and take their seats on the platform, to be followed by a succession of local speakers who proclaimed their readiness to die for the Golden Stool” (Austin). Dr. Busia was a Bono from Wenchi.

5. On April 5, 1955, the Opposition led by Busia and Modesto Apaloo walked out of the Assembly, just after a Motion on a Select Committee to examine the whole question of the federal system of government had been seconded. In their opinion, the Select Committee, comprising some CPP parliamentarians or the “homeless tramp and jackals” (Liberator, March 1956), was incompetent to deal with national matters.

6. To justify its violent campaign, Busia’s NLM referred to the CPP supporters in Asante as “those who belong to no family or clan, those who are strangers, not properly trained to appreciate the value of the true and noble Akan” (Liberator, December 20, 1955).

7. On November 10, 1955, Kwame Nkrumah’s residence was bombed. This was Danquah-Busia-Obetsebi Lamptey’s style of democracy!!!

8. On the day that the CPP reopened its regional office in Kumase after fourteen months of closure, Prof. Busia’s NLM drove a jeep past the crowd and fired shots into it and wounded several people; it also killed a pregnant woman (Adamafio; Botwe-Asamoah).

9. The Opposition led by Dr. Busia, refused to meet with Sir Frederick Bourne in Kumase; Bourne was a constitutional expert sent by the British government to resolve the impasse between the government and Opposition.

10. Dr. Busia and his NLM refused to attend an all-parties conference at Achimota on February 16 1956 to discuss Bourne’s report and to avert another general election, two years after the 1954 general election (Awoonor; Nkrumah). What's more, Prof. Busia and the Opposition rejected the regional assemblies contained in the Bourne report (Bing; Awoonor; Nkrumah).

11. The government issued its constitutional proposal in the April White Paper of 1956; as usual, the opposition boycotted its proceedings.

12. Because of the absence of Prof. Busia and the Opposition at the Achimota meeting, the British Secretary of State found Bourne’s report unacceptable. Hence, the British government decided to hold another general election for the people to decide whether they wanted a “unitary government” or a “federal form of government.” The CPP again won another decisive victory in the July 1956 election. Busia only won by eleven votes in his constituency; once again, he lost the votes in his hometown, Wenchi.

13. Before the election, Dr. Busia had written to inform the Governor that, “in accordance with the constitutional practice in the United Kingdom, the National Liberation Movement and its allies will expect Your Excellency to call upon Doctor K. A. Busia, their Parliamentary Leader, to form a Government should they win more than 52 seats at the election” (Ninsin).

14. Yet after Nkrumah’s CPP won the 1956 general election, Prof. Busia produced another theory saying that no constitution would be acceptable unless it was “favored by a majority of the people of every region into which the Gold Coast” was divided.” In fact, Busia’s action staggered some of his closest allies. Dr. Busia’s model of democracy!!!

15. Back in August 1955, the NLM warned the British government of grisly after-effects if the country should attain independence under the CPP. Thus, “AS FAR AS WE CAN SEE [THIS WOULD LEAD TO A ROAD THAT] MAKES FOR THE COUNTRY (ONE) OF RIOT, REBELLION, REVOLUTION; THE ROAD LONG AGO TAKEN BY THOSE UNHAPPY COUNTRIES WHERE ONE CAN CHANGE ONLY THE HEAD Of STATE OR THE PEOPLE WHO GOVERN BY ARMED INSURRECTION AFTER UNDERGRAOUND CANSPIRACY AND SABOTAGE.” The Opposition’s boycott of the constitutional debate tabled by Nkrumah on August 3, 1956, must, therefore, be understood in the context of Prof. Busia’s declared oath to overthrow Kwame Nkrumah’s democratically elected government by any means possible. A champion of democracy in Africa indeed!!!

16. Dr. Busia traveled to London and made his plea to the British Government to deny granting independence to Ghana since, in his view, the country was not ready for parliamentary democracy. “WE STILL NEED YOU IN THE GOLD COAST…YOUR EXPERIMENT THERE IS NOT COMPLETE. SOMETIMES I WONDER WHY YOU SEEM SUCH IN A HURRY TO WASH YOUR HANDS OFF US” (Botwe-Asamoah). Such was the undemocratic tactic employed by Dr. Busia to undermine the voice of the people in the country. What a Betrayer!!!

17. Earlier, Dr. Busia had told Richard Wright in an interview that he was British, “A WESTERNER …AND WAS EDUCATED IN THE WEST” (Right). He also told the London Times that “OXFORD HAD MADE ME WHAT I AM TODAY. I HAD ELEVEN YEARS CONTACT WITH IT AND CONSIDER IT MY SECOND HOME. MOST OF MY FRIENDS ARE HERE.”

18. When finally the British Colonial Government conceded to Ghana’s independence on March 6, 1957, Nkrumah’s government chose for Ghana’s flag, red for the blood of the martyrs, gold for wealth, green for the rich land and the black star in the center representing the freedom of Africans on the continent and in the Diaspora. As expected, Prof. Busia and the NLM opposed it.

19. Yes, it is true that Dr. Danquah first suggested “Ghana” as the name for the country. Dr. Busia also formed a political party and called it Ghana Congress Party. But when Nkrumah formally proposed “Ghana” as the name for the independent and sovereign country, the Danquah-Busia camp opposed it. What a hypocrisy!!!

20. When the Parliament formally opened after the 1956 election, Dr. Busia and his NLM elected parliamentarians were absent. Champions of democracy indeed!!!

21. When the British Governor, in his opening speech, introduced a Bill declaring that the Gold Coast would be a sovereign and independent State within the Commonwealth, Prof. Busia and the Opposition criticized the proposal saying that it was premature. Traitors!!!

22. On November 20, 1956, Dr. Busia’s NLM and the Northern People’s Party sent a secessionist resolution to the British Colonial office in London for separate independence for the Asante province and the Northern Territories. What a demagogue !!!

If these are/were not acts of sabotage, then we need a Danquah-Busia dictionary of the English language.

Indeed, it is disquieting that President Kufuor and his government is spending $20 million USD to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Ghana’s Independence, which their political ancestors, Danquah and Busia sought uncultured and undemocratic means to SABOTAGE.

In fact, the 50th Anniversary should seek to honor the true national heroes like NANA EKUMFI AMEYAW of Takyiman and the BONO KYEMPEM for saving the country from a bloody civil war, represented by Busia’s NLM declaration of secessionism from the new Ghana. If this is not done on March 6, 2007, the leaders of tomorrow will honor them amid African sacred drumming and dancing across Ghana.

What I meant is that it was wrong for John to assert that no colonial people can attain their independence unless independence was given to them by their colonial master. I therefore cited the case of the unilateral declaration of independence by the colonial states of America to drive home the point that it was very much possible for independence to be attained without the consent of the colonial master! The Americans were compelled to fight off the British who resisted the American unilateral declaration of independence but the Americans defeated them badly and the British had to run back home like a dog with its tail between its thighs!

Indeed,it was because the British had learnt their lessons from the American experience that they found it imprudent to use arms to resist the quest of any colonial people to attain their independence. Thus, the British readily agreed to grant us our independence in their own interest. Can you imagine the British having to send soldiers to fight all the colonial people the world over in the late 1950s and 1960s when most of the colonial people the world over were clamouring for their independence?

She was in Ghana according to right and form, and she just represented the Queen to sign the agreement in the nation's parliament ending colonial rule, but the announcement was made to the people of the GOLD COAST by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and not the Duchess of Kent. The people did not know the real outcome of the agreement signed until Kwame Nkrumah came out to announce it to the populace. A day after the occurance in parliament, a durber was held at the CRICKET FIELD at PALM AVENUE, about 200 meters from the Achimota Police Station, the grounds of the colonial cricket field and former grounds of the UNIVERSITY of GHANA before LEGON was built by Nkrumah, the current GIMPA. The Dutchess of Kent & then ASANTEHENE, Nana Agyemang Prempeh II was at the durber, including the Govenor of the GOLD COAST. Nkrumah was not present at this DURBER due to security reasons. I was then in elementary class 5 at Anunmle Middle Mixed School, Achimota, and we took part in the event. The successful hand over was celebrated that day, and on the third day, Nkrumah made a formal declaration on TV and radio to the nation. Only a few saw the live broadcast on TV, but 90% of the people heard it on the box radio.

No one claims Nkrumah is God. It is simply the apogee of one's recognition that most Ghanaians, at least, culturally, accord the person with accolades and titles to set him or her apart. Folks who even chant 'Nkrumah never dies' surely do not mean he is physically indestructible and lives forever.

You are only jealous that Folks give Nkrumah so much praise. That is all. And we understand that, since you belong to a group which vehemently, and even violently, opposed him every inch of the way, reaching long into our post-Independence era to finally get rid of him.

Folks who love and are close to Danquah have always attributed his demise to Nkrumah, even though we all know Nkrumah never put a gun to his head, nor ordered or plotted for his assassination. The reality is that Nkrumah's harsh reaction to his opposition that were repeatedly trying to kill him resulted in putting Danquah and others in Nsawam Jail. And Danquah died in the Jail from High Blood Pressure that he could not get a timely Medical care for.

Let's face it. Danquah did not develop the High Blood Pressure in jail. He already had developed it, while still a free man. He could have still died from the ailment, had he never been at Nsawam and lived free outside Jail. So, if you would hyperbolize his demise to pin it on Nkrumah, why would you not accept similar hyperbole that Nkrumah's supporters splash on him to honor him?

It is very interesting that we often criticize a harsh response to a political foe, but we hardly concede such a foe's violent methodologies deserves equal condemnation.

To see it all clearly, it is our biases that shape how and who we chastise for his or her undemocratic, and even violent actions in Politics.

If you had studied your history, you would know that indeed Busia was the leader of the largest party in parliament (NLM) when he in fact seconded the motion for independence.

The United party (UP) was formed AFTER the so-called declaration of independence.

The UP was a merger of all the parties in opposition to the CPP: National Liberation Movement, Northern People's Party,
Anlo Youth Organisation,Muslim Association Party Togoland Congress,
Ga Shifimokpee; because after independence, the CPP passed a law (signed by Nkrumah) called Sedition law, which made it unlawful for any party to be based on RELIGION or ETHNICITY.

Therefore, Northern People's Party, Anlo Youth Organisation, Muslim Association Party Togoland Congress, and Ga Shifimokpee; which were based on either ETHNICTY or RELIGION, joined the NLM to form the UNITED PARTY. The UNITED PARTY formed in late 1957 became the only opposition party in Ghana until in 1964 when the UP was, (in the words of the government at the time) PROSCRIBED AND BECAME UNLAWFUL FOR ANYONE TO BELONG TO IT. Anyone who identified with UP after 1964, was sent to DETENTION! That’s the facts.

Banning UP, the only Opposition Party that could stand up to the incumbent Government is another issue worth discussing with utmost objectivity, not sensationalism or any pent-up emotions.

We were resident at the staff quarters. When University of Ghana moved to Legon, the current GIMPA became Ghana School of Business Administration, meaning the first name of GIMPA was GSOBA. You know nothing about the history of LEGON, but you tell me am a lier. There was TV before Ghana had independence, but it was only available within homes of the colonial inhabitants, who were mainly whites. The overall tutors at Universty of Ghana were all Europeans, mainly Scotish and English nationals.

Funny professor Ocquaye, it is time that you give us break with this harboured hatred been exhibited now. Do not allow your past hatred for Nkrumah drive you today into accident.

Ok, the dutchess of kent declared Ghana's independence in parliament but who stood tall and fought for it. Was it not Nkrumah who held that national rally at the OLD POLO GROUND to announce to the whole world of our independence?

Who was in governmental control then in the parliament? Was it Busia or Nkrumah? If Nkrumah then why are you exposing yourself in this foolish way.
Anyway I can understand a point of importance in what you are doing. That is your love to teach, but is it neccessary now?

Is the dutchess of kent a Ghanaian? Why have you heated yourself for nothing? This should not be a lesson to learn from you because in every nation under colonial rule it is automatically the colonial master nation that gives the independence in collaboration with the leader to be, in this case Nakrumah and not Busia as you wished it could had been.

In short why have you disturbed yourself with this issue of minor importance since every Ghanaian at that time and today was aware that it was Nkrumah who led Ghana to independence. Where is the difference, and why are you worrying yourself with this primary school subject?

If a person is arrested and charged with a crime but is exonerated by a court after a court trial is it the judge who gave the accused his/her needed freedom or was it the defense that proved the innocence of the accused? Every colonized nation seeking to break free from the grips of their master do eventually get a sign-off of their respective colonial masters; the US did with England and so did Ghana with the British. The British and or its representative, Duchess of Kent did not declare Ghana's independence because she had a moral rebirth or an epiphany of some kind; the British had to sign off to relieve Britain of its responsibilities to Ghana as the government of the day. Without British signing off the struggle would continue. This is fact that covers commerce and contracts. One does not get to own their freedom from the slave master without the masters signoff or by public declaration. Prof Ocquaye get a simple logical thought process going. Enough with the bull that comes from Ghana's disgraceful bunch who have allowed politics and tribal zealotry to take hold of their rather limited intellectual honesty and unprincipled judgment.

Kwame Nkrumah was not with UGCC when Ghana attained Independence in March, 1957.He worked for the UGCC as a General secretary between 1947 to 1949 where he founded his own party the CPP.Out of the Big 6 of famous 1948 riot,only 2 joined Nkrumah's CPP in 1949;they are Alfred Gbedemah and Ako Adjei until the independence day 6th March,1957.Danquah and his friends in the UGCC stood against CPP in 1951,1954 etc before independence.It is very wrong for anybody to portray old pictures of THE BIG 6 in 1948 when Nkrumah was a member of UGCC as evidence of personalities who attained independence for Ghana.In 1957 Kwame Nkrumah and CPP attained Independence for us but not with UGCC.The UGCC leaders did not want the British to grant Gold Coast Independence at a point in time.The British organised a kind of refrendum to find out if 2/3 of the population were ready for Independence.Nkrumah won that elections too,so nobody should tell us that UGCC attained independence for us,it's a big lie.The Big 6 was divided into 2 parties,half for UGCC the opposition and half for CPP the heroes.Thank you.

In effect, what you are pointing out is that once out of the team, if it finally wins a Cup, the departed members do not earn any credit for the Championship. That is so simply elegant!

Nevertheless, I have always favored the notion that we credit all who attempted and even failed earlier, before Nkrumah, with his later successful wrestling of our Independence from the British. I sort of figure the earlier pressure projected by those preceding Nkrumah, however distant or in close proximity to his success, all added up to the final stress that forced the hand of the British.

So, let us be widely benevolent to share the credits among all these past patriots. What I detest greatly is the attempt of a few disgruntled, stone-cold, sore-losers to modify our History with their manufactured facts.

We all know that he who wields the Power reserves the right to declare freedom to his or her subordinates. But our Freedom did not come free, nor was it voluntarily declared to us. We wrestled it from the British, whether or not our might was no match to their global might.

Therefore, our leaders who led us to claim our freedom could be credited with such declaration, if they ever did take to a Public forum or arena to announce our Independence.

At least, Oquaye concedes that it was Kwame Nkrumah who put in the Motion for it to be seconded by Busia. All this minor, hair-splitting error-fishing with Nkrumah's credits by the unforgiving, endlessly begrudging, irreconcilable UP/NLM elements is part of the never-ending campaign to reduce his contributions to almost a nonentity.

Unless for some Academic purpose, this latest Oquaye's Nkrumah-bashing is totally unimportant. So, long as these UP/NLM folks keep trying to diminish Nkrumah's inputs and fame, his followers would also continue to denigrate the likes of Busia and Danquah and Dombo vengefully. None of that helps establish a positive impact on our posterity. We should allow time to heal our animosities and create the necessary neutral environment for all our past leaders to be fully and duly recognized for their deeds and misdeeds objectively.

The truth is that apart from the USA, all the other former colonies of Britain got their independence through a peaceful process. Now, the process always begins in the British Parliament and the British Parliament used to pass an Act to allow the said colony to attain its independence from the British Empire.

Therefore, if we are to use legislative acts or acts in the legislature to determine who to credit for our independence, then the credit should certainly go to the British Parliament which passed the Gold Coast independence Act after which the Duchess of Kent came to Ghana to meet our National Assembly only to perform a ceremonial role. In that case, is it proper to give the credit to the Duchess of Kent and rather than Kwame Nkrumah whose gallant work forced the hand of both the British Parliament and the Duchess of Kent to do what they did?

In any case, what the masses can remember to this day is the fact that Kwame Nkrumah was the one who made the public declaration of independence of the Gold Coast and it was Nkrumah who announced the birth of a new nation called Ghana. Period!!!
