  Good people of Ghana i salute you all. Please let us admit and be honest with ourselves to say our institutions of learning particularly Ghana tertiary is below standard. Come to South Africa here and see the infrastructure on campus, the quality of books, the research work done by professors and studnets, books published by professors you will marvel. What do we see in Ghana lazy lecturers who just copy textbooks, recycle information and print out for students as manuals for us to buy. This is unacceptable. It is just a sign of laziness, poor reading culture, chew and poor and extorting money from poor students in the name of lecture notes. Here textbooks are available as well as study guides. Your assignment requires synthesis and analytical thinking not just chew and poor. You are assessed based on your critical thinking and ability to develop concepts to solve problems. Legon of all how many PhD students are they able to produce in each year? Stellenbosh, Wits, University of Johannesburg and university of pretoria are standard universities. Research they carry out are internationally recognised not cut and paste work we do in Ghana ooo.

  University of science n tech students can't do practicals with equipment only reading. Are those in KNUST doing reading subjects?
  In GH, practicals carry low marks.
  
  Can u imagine, whiles I was doing marketing course in T-Poly , we had a computer lessons, but no access to computers? Very shame. We were made to learn just doing the reading of those things.
  Computer lessons need not to read, a teacher should just take students to the computer lab, open and start teaching any topic. Anything he wants students to learn should be by playing with the computer and creating those thing on the computer. Eg, you want to teach how to work with Word format, the teacher should just take students to the computer lab. Open Word n ask students to also open, then teach them how to create word format doc.

  Alfa Shaban of Ghanaweb is credited with this article's byline and so deserves opprobrium for sloppy analysis and false reporting. Shaban's 2nd paragraph states, "An analysis of the report showed that UG, Legon was ranked 601st of the world's top 800 universities..." but the report shows nothing of the sort.
  
  UG is emphatically NOT ranked 601 out of the 800 universities in the survey. The bottom quartile, those 200 institutions ranked from 601 through 800, are lumped together as rank "601-800". Besides UG, there are 199 other schools with the same ranking. None of these poor performers was given a score in column 6 ("Overall") in the "Performance Breakdown" data. (see https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/2016/world-ranking#!/page/0/length/-1
  To locate the University of Ghana, go to the bottom of the page and select "All" in the "Display" box.)
  
  In the various categories surveyed, UG ranked 184th out of the bottom 200 universities (in other words, 16th from the last of the entire 800 universities)in "Teaching", with a paltry score of 15.6 (Number 1 California Institute of Technology [aka Cal Tech] scored 95.6.)
  
  In Performance Breakdown's 2nd category, "International Outlook", UG scored rather better, tying with one other for 31st place in the bottom quartile, i.e., 631st place overall. (Cal Tech scored 64.0 and Number 2 Oxford scored 94.4.)
  
  In Performance Breakdown's 3rd category, "Research," UG slipped to 51st place among the bottom 200 (651st place overall) with a paltry score of 15.6. (Cal Tech = 97.6)
  
  Performance Breakdown's 4th category is "Citations," and UG dropped even further, to a 2-way tie for 96th place in the bottom quartile (696th place overall), with a score of only 19.5. (Cal Tech = 99.8)
  
  The 5th category among Performance Breakdown is "Industry Income," and UG scored absolutely zero in a 19-way tie for last place. (Cal Tech = 97.8)
  
  Another set of data involved "Key Statistics." One among these was "Student to Staff Ratio," a important indicator of the personalized attention students receive from their instructors. Here, UG only ranks 190th among the bottom 200, or 790/800 overall, with a ratio of 37.5 students per staff member. (Cal Tech = 6.9 students per staff member.)
  
  Last but not least, allow me to cite, among Key Statistics, one more piece of data, that of "International Students." This number represents a school's attractiveness to students from other countries, with a higher number indicating desirability and a lower number representing, at best, disinterest among potential foreign students. In this final category, UG is in a 25-way tie for 134th place among those schools in the 601-800 (4th quartile) category. This represents an overall rank of 734/800. UG's international enrolees represent a mere 2% of its student body. (Cal Tech = 27%).
  
  Clearly, Alfa Shaban's claim that the University of Ghana ranks #601 is either the result of an inability to understand simple lists of numbers, or indicates a laziness in approach toward the subject, or worse (and probably more true) is a deliberate falsification in an attempt to put as good a face as possible on an absolutely dismal result.
  
  Alfa Shaban should immediately be sacked, either for being an idiot, or for being a liar.

  Let me use this opportunity to educate people on this ranking. If you have been following these rankings since 2003 (it's a recent phenomenon), you would note that only South African universities have usually been included. It used to rank only 500 universities in the world, which didn't mean that the others were bad rather the researchers didn't deem it necessary to include the other countries. It was this year that THE decided to include more African universities as Global Universities. The initial THE ranking for Africa placed UG at 12. Actually, it is good for Ghana and UG as it is a recognition that Ghana has a global university and UG is one. You have to meet certain criteria before you are included in this list of 800 top global universities. Let me also add that this actually the first time UG and a Ghanaian university has made it to this list. Remember there are over 100,000 universities in the world.
