The country's academic success has helped it become a thriving economy, and the way it has built its education system could hold lessons for the rest of the world.
"Singapore is a fascinating case," said Marc Tucker, the president of the U.S. National Center on Education and the Economy. "[It] was a major British port before the Second World War. When Britain got out and closed its base Singapore was in terrible shape.
"Now today they are one of the best performing economies in the entire world. They did it largely with education and training."

If Singapore's rags-to-riches transition was built on education, the secret of its education system is the quality of its teachers. "They source their teachers from among the best kids coming out of their high schools," explained Tucker.
'Creative use of knowledge'
In the post-war years, Singapore had a low-cost, low-skill labor market, and it was enough for its education system to aim for universal literacy. But starting in the 1970s, Singapore's economic needs shifted. It was quickly moving toward high tech, white collar jobs and the education system needed to keep up. Soon, the aim was for a world-class education for every single child, and that meant moving on from rote learning to encouraging creativity.
"They had a drilling system when that was the only option -- they had to expand education quickly," said the OECD's education director, Andreas Schleicher. "But as they had achieved this, they were the first to think about, what is it that our children need to be successful ... (in) tomorrow's economy?
"One thing that's been clear to them is that the world economy no longer rewards people just for what they know. Google knows everything. The world economy rewards people for what they can do with what they know.
"The emphasis on the application, the creative use of knowledge is very, very strong in Singapore and other Asian countries."
The importance of education is instilled at a young age -- before children even get to primary school.
"I think for us as preschool educators, we are the foundation years," said Diana Ong, principal at Pat's Schoolhouse Sembawang Country Club, a preschool in the north of Singapore. "We form the basic foundation.
"I think the first years of a child's life is very important. So when you have a very confident child, that child's confidence will carry him or her through primary school as well. Not only do you want a child that is smart, you want a child who is resilient."
Schleicher says it's part of the culture of many Asian countries for parents to prioritize their children's education.
"It starts with resources, the priority they assign to education," he explained. "In these countries, parents and grandparents are going to invest their last resources, their last money into ... the education of their children.
"This is sort of a question of priorities. You can see in all tiers of public policy, education comes first. That's your future."

You have all done well on that area. You cares about tribe where someone comes from? We want people with vision to rule Ghana. Ghana belongs to all the ten regions. None of the tribe is better than the other. We need leaders with visions irrespective of where one comes from. I think Ashanti region actually has a lot of criminals because, we have gold, timber,diamond,cocoa and the rest everybody comes down south to engage in robbery because you politicians haven't created jobs for the citizens when they complete their education. In the area of armed robbery and corruption I will give you guys 100%,anyway we can not blame that on NDC alone, NPP is also to be blamed. None of the leaders had vision but roads and schools but our roads are the worse and the leaders create school without creating jobs. Betty it is good to be sad to be an adhanti. I'm really sad to be a Ghanaian and Ashante because of our corrupt judicial system, armed robbery , ritual murders, starvation of our people, injustice that is going on in Ghana , children and women abuse. I cry and pray everyday for a deliverer.

Betty Mould is saying that at the time she was appointed Min. of Edu, there were 525 SHS's in this country, and within a period of almost 8years of the John Mahama NDC gov't, John Dramani Mahama has added about half ie 262 or approx. 263 SHS's making a total of 787 or approx. 788 SHS's in this country.
Now, before we address the obvious stinking ethnocentric comments Betty Mould has put out there, let us look at the numbers ie the number of SHS's, Betty Mould claims the John Dramani Mahama NDC gov't has added to what already exists in this country.
First of all, Betty Mould does not describe the kind of SHS's and it's comparison to the already existing and established SHS's she claims, John Dramani Mahama has added to the number of SHS's in this country.
Secondly, everybody in this country know John Dramani Mahama said by the year 2016, 200 SHS's would be built in this country, completed, staffed and admitting students to acquire knowledge and education to contribute to the development efforts of this country. Aside of the 200 SHS's promised, another 23 SHS's from a World Bank facility had been secured and was going to be added to the 200 SHS's making a total of 223 SHS's under the 8years of their gov't. However, in building these 223 SHS's, 50SHS's of the 200 promised directly by John Dramani Mahama, will be ready starting 2013, with 50 completed every year subsequently thereafter, making a total of 200 SHS's by the year 2016. The timeline for the 23 World Bank facility secured SHS's were to be completed by 2016 too, however without the specifics on how many would be completed every year.
First off, 223 SHS's is a very far cry from 263 SHS's, which is half of the 525SHS's Betty Mould claims John Dramani Mahama and his gov't have added to the stock of 525SHS's, so that assertion is false. That claim is of very , very dubious validity, like Betty Mould Iddrisu saying Alfred Agbesi Woyome has a contract with Ghana when Alfred Agbesi Woyome himself, said he didn't have a contract.
We will speak to Betty Mould's gratuitous inclination for false assertions or for speaking obvious untruths, which invariably led to Ghana losing millions upon millions of dollars in a thieving and corruption plagued Mahama NDC gov't machination for wanton looting a la dubious judgment debts.
Now, let us consider the year 2013 alone, and the 50SHS's promised by the Mahama NDC gov't. Can Betty Mould Iddrisu tell Ghanaians how many of those 50SHS's have been built, completed, staffed with teaching and auxiliary members of staff and have admitted students and their exact location in this country? Likewise for the year 2014 and now the year 2015? Can Betty Mould Iddrisu give the exact coordinates of those completed SHS's in buttressing her claims of about 263SHS's having been added to the stock of 525SHS's in this country?
Or should we draw the conclusion or infer that, it is Betty Mould's myopic and rather totally infantile and senseless position that, should you promise 200SHS's without the structures to back it up anywhere across and in this country, then according to how her mind works, you have constructed and added to the 525SHS's already existing that her gov't came to meet?
The shallowness, the hollowness, the unsoundness of her claims, the illogicality of her claims bothering on outright foolishness makes for very unfathomable mediocrity and irresponsibleness that should have no place in the development, accountability and leadership discourse in this country. It is reckless and nauseating.
Betty Mould would have made a tad bit of sense and salvaged the little credibility and image she had left, if she had pointed out to Ghanaians the about 263SHS's she claims John Mahama has added to the stock of SHS's in this country, where they are located, the number of students in those SHS's, the number of teachers employed and are on the payroll and are being paid in this country.
Her inability to state any such facts to buttress her baseless and unfounded claims which can be described as a mirage and a apparition, shows the propagandist and irresponsibleness of her person and her NDC gov't, when it comes to the critical and most important aspect of the development and growth objectives of this country within the context of education.
Is it therefore in the least bit surprising, the effect this continuous path of damnable propaganda fueled policy position of her NDC gov't has had on the educational standards of this country which has fallen and collapsed in this country, with the labour force on the educational front from the basic to the tertiary level all embarking on some industrial action or the other under her gov't with very disastrous consequences for this country?
These are very serious issues and Betty Mould can therefore not come to the Ashanti Region, and start ranting and raving about the fact that, she is sad as an Ashanti because what her gov't promised has not been achieved, and the masses being educated of this basic, indisputable fact are committing sacrilege.
This stinking, reckless and irresponsible nonsense-ness of ethnocentric and tribalistic foolishness that irresponsible, reckless and careless so-called politicians and leaders always seek as salvation, for their failed leadership and governance, would have no place in this country.
Instead of backing your claims with the evidence to support your assertions, you just open your mouth and start spewing nonsense.
It was this same dearth of responsibility that saw Ghana losing and you presiding over the looting of over $30million dollars by the Mahama-Woyome NDC thieving gang, and various sums of money, under similarly orchestrated stealing expeditions running into millions and millions of dollars in a thieving and stealing spree in this country based on falsity and lack of evidence and ethnocentrism.
Ghanaians are sick and tired of the irresponsible John Mahama NDC do-nothing gov't that preaches ethnocentrism whilst looting this country into the pits and when subjected to accountability principles, start making irresponsible statements.
You steal to secure and bribe your way into power, you better deliver on your promises and the mandate you bought, and desist from such irresponsible statements and conduct which sends Ghana into the very depths of retrogression and stagnation.

You cannot stir and steer economic development when investors are afraid to invest in an economy where there is no reliable and dependable power supply. Electricity is the engine that drives the economy in all aspects. Ghanaians retired abroad will move home and spend their retirement income in Ghana but they are all afraid. Why can't you guys in the government see that. Some of have travelled to the western world and seen how development hinges on constant power supply. Again, u see how Ghallyhood actors dominated by highly educated folks struggle to survive in the movie industry while Kumawood uneducated actors are riding high. Its DIVINE like the Jews.
