Your are very right. If the NPP has evidence of "foreigners" in the register all that they need to do is to compile the list, present it to the EC and demand the names be removed from the register. The EC goes to the electoral area with the names of the so called foreigners call them one-by-one to prove they are either Ghanaians or non-Ghanaians. If they cannot prove they are Ghanaians their names are removed or else the NPP can go to court to prove their case. Why all these demonstrations when the EC is still even reviewing the presentations from stakeholders. These lazy bootlikers cannot force the EC to go do what they want.

Quoting, the 1992 constitution which gives Asante and his group the right to demonstrate, Mr. Asante mustn't forget that the EC IS EQUALLY MANDATED BY THE SAME CONSTITUTION TO FREELY FUNCTION, WITHOUT ANY INTERFERENCE.

A cross section of some dissatisfied Ghanaians have been demonstrating to press home their displeasure with what they describe as insensitive economic policies being implemented by President John Kufuor’s government. The Committee for Joint Action (CJA), a political pressure group organized the demonstrations. The group says President Kufuor has reneged on his promise to alleviate the suffering of the ordinary Ghanaian.

But Kufuor’s government said the allegations are unfounded. Bernard Morna is a lead organizer of CJA. From Ghana’s capital Accra, he tells reporter Peter Clottey that President Kufuor’s government is tactless to the plight of the masses.

“Let me start by saying that from 1998 to the year 2000, and indeed from 1995 or early the then NPP (New Patriotic Party) presidential candidate J. A. Kufuor had joined some members of the then opposition and went on a series of demonstrations in this country against what he called escalating cost of living in Ghana. Opposition leader / candidate Kufuor described the then regime as insensitive, criminal and economic shortsighted… but now the Kufuor government is insensitive to the plight of the people of Ghana constantly increasing prizes on every item and for every opportunity they find they want to increase the prize of goods and services, even when the people are crying. The people of Ghana must resist this order,” Morna said.

He denied popular belief that President Kufuor’s government has improved economic conditions in the country as shown by some economic indicators.

“Let me respond quickly by saying that if you take the macro economic indicators as projected by the Kufuor administration then you would have caused to let me call it to believe some how in these indicators. But the reality is that if a government deliberately decides not to pay teachers their salary arrears from 2005 to 2007, but the question you ask yourself is how long can this inflation be sustained? Because it is an artificial creation, you owe the people and you must pay. Government has not done so, so those who claim that the economy is doing well, it is worse,” he opined.

Morna questioned what he said are claims by President Kufuor’s administration that it has allowed dissenting views in the country.

“That is preposterous. The Kufuor administration has no mandate to deny anybody in this country the right of demonstration. The 1992 constitution exercised that freedom of association, freedom of expression except that any government would want to undermine that. Even in opposition we joined hand with then candidate Kufuor and we all went on several demonstrations including “Yabre” demonstrations, “Sieme Preko” demonstrations, “Wieme Preko” demonstrations and “Kume Preko” demonstrations,” Morna pointed out.

He said freedom of expression is guaranteed by the constitution contrary to what he described as claims by President Kufuor’s administration.

“So, that enjoyment of our right of expression is not being guaranteed or we are not enjoying at the behest of Kufuor administration. But because it is a constitutional right that the people of Ghana fought to attain. And therefore, for anyone to suggest that the fact that we have been able to go on demonstrations is to show that Kufuor’s administration accepts dissenting views is only to beg the question,” he noted.

If you support a new register can you tell Ghanaians how a new register will eliminate multiple registration? A former NPP office holder suggest that to check underage registration primary school registers should be used to double check, what about those who have never been to school? Did the constitution not guarantee same rights for those demonstrating against the NPP government then? I commend the police their consistency in applying the rules. I did not remember Kufour setting up a committee to defend the rights of the "Wahala" demonstrators - what goes around comes around.

Wahala demo now scheduled for May 26

Kumasi, May 10, GNA - The Committee for Joint Action (CJA) has now agreed to hold its 'Wahala' demonstration in Kumasi on Thursday, May 26 after considering the prohibition order served on them by a Kumasi High Court forbidding them to hold the demonstration on May 5.

The CJA said in accepting the order of the court, they have demonstrated that they respect the law courts and also that the committee was committed to a peaceful demonstration. This was contained in a statement issued in Kumasi on Tuesday and signed by Mr Yaw Doe-Tamakloe, secretary of the local committee of the CJA.

They have accordingly notified the Ashanti Regional Police Command in writing that the demonstration, the fourth in a series, would take place on Thursday, May 26.

The statement expressed the hope that the police would not conjure any reasons at the last minute to demand further postponement of the demonstration.

"We also hope with the postponement, the police will find ample time to make adequate security arrangements for the successful and peaceful conduct of the event", the CJA added. The committee said even though they have accepted postponement of the event, it was still convinced that "the NPP government manipulated the police to seek all means for postponement of the demonstration". "It is now obvious that the NPP government moved to cause the postponement of the Wahala demonstration just to allow surrogates of the government to organise demonstrations in Accra and possibly in other places ahead of a CJA demonstration in Kumasi".

The demonstration was scheduled for May 5 in Kumasi but a Kumasi High Court prohibition order was served on the Committee on May 4.

It will be very stupid for the EC to take orders from the failed elections petitioners.Nana Addo and Bawumia filed a petition for the Supreme Court to overturn the presidential results declared by Dr Afari Gyan,the EC boss after the 2012 general elctions.The Supreme Court dismissed the petition and made recommendations for the EC to make reforms.Nana Addo accepted the verdict alright, therefore he cannot impose his own conditions for the EC.Nana Addo and Bawumia have no right whatsoever to order the EC for a new voters register.EC should make reforms according to the Supreme Court's recommendation but not by the failed petitioners.LMVCA can take orders from Nana Addo and Bawumia with their new fake evidence of Togolese and Cambodians on the Voters Register but they cannot order the EC to do anything for them.We respect the laws of this country and I hope LMVCA also does the same thing.They should get a copy of the Supreme Court recommendation and the 2012 elections report.Thank you.

The current chair of the EC is worsening the already embarrassing and discredited and battered image of the EC by starting off with peddling falsehood and compromising the independence of the EC and that cannot be a healthy development for our democracy.
As a former chair of the NCCE, it is obvious she didn't learn anything at that outfit, which interestingly, she headed, and had the mandate to educate the citizenry of their rights as enshrined in the constitution, when it comes across she has chosen to ignore some aspects of the constitution to serve her own whims and caprices in a dictatorial manner, in asking the LMVCA political pressure group to present their petition in what she feels and deems as the appropriate manner, when the constitution affords the masses, the right to picket and demonstrate in exercising their right to free expression and self-determination in a democracy. This is a path that will obviously lead to problems if care is not taken when everybody in this country and the EC itself, knows and admits the voters register is a bloated and discredited piece of document and needs to be changed immediately.

If yes, she need not ask political parties to submit their opinions before she can make her decision. She should have studied her records including the Supreme Court 2012 rulings as bases for change to make the voters register credible. She could have avoided political parties and then come out to tell Ghanaians what to expect. For not coming out to tell Ghana what our voter register is going to look like, she has allowed Ghanaians to engaged in unnecessary political fights.God help Ghana
