SOURCE: RADIO XYZ (FEB. 2014)--------Political pundit Kweku Baako Jnr says the fast depreciation of the local currency vindicates former Vice Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, Dr Bawumia’s warning that playing propaganda with the economy could have serious consequences has come to pass.

“After being in denial for the last couple of years, the true state of the economy is now obvious for all to see ‘fiili fiili’ as they say in my neck of the woods. The propaganda has finally given way to reality and it is not a pretty sight”, Dr Bawumia warned last year.

The cedi has already depreciated by three per cent against the major international currencies this month.

The US dollar, which sold at Ghc2.20 on the local foreign exchange market before Christmas last year, now sells at Ghc2.60.

The British pound, which sold at Ghc3 now sells at Ghc4.20.

The euro and CFA are also selling at Ghc3.50 and Ghc4.80 respectively.

In 2013, the local currency suffered 17-per cent depreciation.

The year-on-year depreciation shows a 21.96 per cent depreciation of the cedi against the dollar; 28.88 per cent against the pound sterling; 23.98 per cent against the euro and 25.54 per cent against the Swiss franc.

The Bank of Ghana recently injected $20 million into critical areas of the economy as part of efforts to shore up the cedi.

The main opposition New Patriotic Party’s 2012 vice presidential candidate said at the first Alhaji Aliu Mahama Lectures last year that: “Mr. Chairman, my concern looking at the developments in the cedi exchange rate since independence is that the cedi has been on a continuous one direction slide”, Dr Bawumia observed.

“At independence, Ghana was part of the West African Currency Board using British Pounds, shillings and pence. The exchange rate was the equivalent of 73 pesewas to the US dollar. By 1965, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah introduced the Cedi. The exchange rate at this time was ¢1.04/$. By 1983, the exchange rate was ¢52.6/$. By 1992, the exchange rate was ¢520.8/$. By 2000, the exchange rate was ¢7047/$. By 2008, the exchange rate was GH¢1.19/$ (¢11,900/$) in 2008. By October 2013, the exchange rate was GH¢2.20/$ (¢22,000/$) with all indications that it could decline further by the end of the year. At this rate, the exchange rate could be GH¢4.4/$ in another 4 years”.

According to Dr Bawumia, government’s lack of discipline in borrowing was also worsening the economic outlook.

At that lecture, the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana said: “…The rate of growth of public debt is a matter of concern. Ghana’s total public debt has increased from Ghc9.5bn in 2008 to Ghc43.9 billion as at August 2013 (an increase of 357% in less than 5 years)!”

In his view, “the NDC government has borrowed the equivalent of $20 billion in just the last five years! What is worrying is that they tell us that this is only the first gear! Can you see or feel that $20 billion dollars has been pumped into this economy in the last five years? Where are the projects to show for the $20 billion? Just imagine the transformational effect if every region were given $2 billion for development projects”.

He warned that: “With such large scale borrowing, government is crowding out the private sector which is unable to borrow to grow their business. Risk free Treasury bill rates are around 23% and bank lending rates are on the rise because of excessive government borrowing. Lending rates are now some 30 percent”.

Kweku Baako Jnr told Joy FM on Saturday that it was high time the Government listened to criticism from people of Dr Bawumia’s ilk so as not to plunge the economy into the doldrum.

Do you remember when the government contracted almost one billion dollars ($1 billion)loans in the name of GNPC which the Minority complained about not having passed through Parliament and the government responded that it was contracted in the name of GNPC and therefore does not need Parliamentary approval? Do you remember that? Funny thing is that, it shows on the government balance sheet as a loan that is to be paid by the government because I or you don't own GNPC but it is owned by the government.

You can shout and call names but arguments are won by supporting facts not by being LOUD, have a nice day.

They did that because they help him to dupe the nation the tune of 51 million cedis and since the court ruled in favor of Ghana, has the ruling government retrieved the money?

Actually if you don't know, the constitution bars people who are mentally sick from voting anywhere in the world including Ghana and there is a certain threshold on the IQ scale that if you fall below are declared as mentally sick.

After all, the minority were very much aware of all the loans that have come before the August house and have been "trotting kilometres to and fro the media houses, telling their tall tails as they go along."

Now, Mahama is claiming his government hasn't misapplied any of the loans collected except its intended purposes that is abound for all to see, hence edging the minority to prove otherwise before all and sundry. So, over to the minority!

When school buildings that used to cost $200,000 Npp rule now cost $800,000 under Ndc, there is nothing you can do to stop that corruption.

Sarpong, I have repeated in here for a while now that we need a minority that would put the sitting government in check and not a minority that just goes about making unsubstantiated wild allegations and NPP has been doing the latter since day one in opposition. We were all hurrah in here when Kennedy Agyapong exposed Woyome. Why were we collectively on the same page over Woyome? Well, the proof before him was undeniable.

My problem in here has been the open to doubt allegation that has been streaming from your corner of the political divide. Give me a vibrant and trustworthy opposition and I am all down for it wholeheartedly. After all, a constructive criticism from opposing sides is good for our "crawling" democracy.

The minority in parliament does not have to prove anything, it is the responsibility of the Auditor General to appropriately inform Ghanaians as to whether or not state funds are being mismanaged. But since corruption is the order of the day in Ghana under NDC government, one can only expect the Auditor General to be economical with the information he/she passes on to Ghanaians.

So at the end of the day you can throw accusations around and point fingers, but the onus is on the government in power to do right by and for the people. Unfortunately the only people satisfied thus far are the NDC support base. Everybody else is reeling with frustration.

I believe after they've gone round to check, they would stop singing the lazy man song which says there is nothing in place. Their mischief is giving them up gradually. Next time they should do proper politics.

So, even though most of the MPs, NDC or NPP or CPP or TNT may be sleeping in Parliament, which is true, and suddenly wake up and vote for loan approvals, give it to the "drunken sailors" who SQUANDER it anyway they want, instead on the proposed projects. Otherwise; how are your roads, schools, hospitals, clinics, etc., etc?

But this is a non-starter as it has presented the opportunity to compare the track records and personalities of the two leaders -Prez. John Mahama and Nana Akuffo Addo - to really determine who is really competent or incompetent. Let's start with Nana Addo.

First, he was appointed Attorney General, AG, during Prez. Kuffuors administration and how did he fare? He lost high profile cases. Do you remember the infamous Tsatsu's case where he wrote on the charge sheet: "The President Versus Tsatsu instead of The State versus Tsatsu?" This got the case thrown out of court in the first round of the trial. Then, there was the fraudulent drill ship saga, for which reason K.T. Hammond today is to be investigated by EOCO? And now this Delta Foods scam. All these incidents that cost the nation dearly was as a result of Nana Akuffo Addo's MISMANAGEMENT and POOR LEADERSHIP, in other words INCOMPETENCE. Remember, as a result of his high level of incompetence as Attorney General he was reshuffled and sent to the foreign ministry.

NANA ADDO AS FOREIGN MINISTER
It was under the watch of Nana Addo as foreign minister when over 40 Ghanaians were murdered in cold blood in Gambia and what effort did he make to seek justice for our unfortunate compatriots? Nothing really significant. It took the effort of human right activist Nana Oye Lithur, Now a minister in the NDC Government, and later, Prof. Mills When he became president to get compensation for the affected families.

NANA ADDO AS MP
Go to Akyem Abuakwa today and ask of Nana Addo's contribution towards development as MP for 12 years. In fact, his contributions are far as developments are concerned is insignificant, if any. Recently, government had to make concerted effort in providing necessities as water, roads and other infrastructure which have brought relief and hope to the people.

NANA ADDO AS NPP FLAG BEARER
It is a truism to say that under the watch of Nana Addo as flag bearer the NPP has experienced the most turbulent and chaotic crisis in the history of the party resulting in the death of two of its members through horrifying experiences as ACID BATHS and STABBINGS. IF YOU ARE TO DESCRIBE THE NPP IN ONE WORD IT IS "MESS!"

So if this is the unenviable record of Nana Addo, how can he and his comrades have the guts to call others incompetent?

As for Bawumia the least said about him the better. It was during his tenure of office as deputy Governor, Bank of Ghana, that huge amounts of money was spent in producing coins only to be thrown away. Do you remember the 1 pesewa coins that were never used?
No wonder he was in the Supreme Court ignorantly singing, "You and I were not there, You and I were not there " until his case was thrown away like a piece of garbage. How can a principal witness keep on repeating he was not present at a scene and expect to be regarded as a credible witness?

PRESIDENT JOHN MAHAMA’S RECORDS
If Prez. Mahama who within three years have initiated the construction of 123 new Senior High Schools, Eastern Corridor Roads, Tamale International Airport, implementing the Free SHS Policy, Circle and Kasoa Interchange, Adenta Water Project, completion of the Job 600 ( which has given parliament a modern look), New Teaching Hospitals, dozens of polyclinics etc, Atuabo Gas plant, Komenda Sugar Factory, Kejetia state-of-the art terminal and market, and the list goes on and on.
If a person with all the afore-mentioned achievements is incompetent what do you call someone who is the author of violence, tribalistic, incapable of managing and uniting his own party which is made up of only a little over four million people?

By calling President Mahama “incompetent”, the NPP has just opened a can of worms. We will now have the opportunity to compare the two leaders, President John Maham and Nana Akuffo Addo, to determine who is really competent or vice versa. The show has just begun. Sit back and enjoy it, folks!

When people ask for submissions, do they get them? Adu Asare and the Brazillian scandal - do we have a break down of how those funds were disbursed? Our President set up a committee to investigate. Nothing becomes of any investigation and even when rulings are made, there is no mechanism to collect moneies back (Woyome on my mind) So "yen tie obiaaaa" galore. We all suffer! Some us as citizens cannot write or write so you can say anything at rally for supporters and get of big shout outs. Judging from the time NDC government took office from Kufuor and NPP government including Nana Addo in 2008,Ghanaian roads, cities' streets, and fly-overs were dusty and uncompleted for four good years despite the Chinese loan, the sales of our national assets namely Ghana airways and the Ghana telecommunications. The loans and the sales were shared among the NPP members of parliatment with impunity. All roads , streets and fly overs have been completed by the NCD government under president Mahama for everyone to see.

You have a majority in Parliament with the Speaker of the House, and a lame duck at that, from your NDC party. When your parliamentary majority approves all the loans, even if it is to buy clippers to shave your pubic hair, you don't turn around and say, it's the minority MP's who are sleeping, when you divert the loans and steal it.
That is a different higher level of stupid coming from John Mahama and it is just unnecessary.
Look NDC let it be spelt out very clearly and plainly to you. This John Mahama guy has looted how much he can, and from the way he is talking and behaving, he doesn't at the moment give a damn about what happens to your party when he leaves in 2016.
Nobody needs to tell you guys what you need to do if you want to be a cohesive opposition party when he leaves office in 2016, because he is leaving and judging from the way he has branded all the Ewes in the NDC party as thieves, it will be very difficult for your NDC party to come to power again after 2016 when the major power base of your NDC party is the Volta region and Ewes for that matter, heck it is called the NDC world bank.
There are increasingly better alternatives and the earlier you dealt with this level of stupid in your party, the better for you guys. This is free advice.

I don't think there are any questions around whether or nto it was approved. The question is there is not much to show for the amount of money borrowed. If there is a Monitoring, accountability and evaluation wing in Parliament, then they have failed us. They need to follow up after the approval of the loans to ensure that the reason for which these loans were approved are fulfilled. You get funds three consecutive years to complete a project and in a just tell us it is 45% complete. What happened to the rest fo the money and will the project be completed using the original amount allocated for that particular project? Probity and accountability department. That is what we need.

It would be recalled members of the NDC party embarked on a demonstration some months ago, lamenting that John Mahama had not addressed their road infrastructure and a host of other projects which had made life unbearable for them.
I can bet my last pesewa this was a direct insult to Doe Adjaho for sitting on his bum, sleepily approving loans and lacking the ability and commonsense to check what the loans would be used for, because it cannot be the case, John Mahama doesn't know his NDC party is in the majority in Parliament and they approve the loans 100% of the time with little or no help from the NPP minority, and has also been a parliamentarian once before.
So if it is approved and stolen and you the Speaker sleep and cannot realize those loans are being approved for stealing, then what John Mahama in other words is telling you Doe Adjaho is that you are a fool...hehehehehe.
As for this insult, Doe Adjaho has to respond because a toddler knows approving of loans in Ghana's parliament since the coming into effect of the 1992 Constitution is done by the majority in Parliament. It is not the minority which approves loans in Ghana's Parliament. It is even statistically, logically and reasonably impossible.
Sleeping Doe Adjaho approves loans without thinking and foolishly, and by failing to scrutinize and checking to see if it is actually used for those projects, if I loot it, don't ask members of the world bank to ask me why the road network is poor, and that is the insult to the Speaker of the House from John Dramani Mahama.
It is beginning to look like the Citizen Vigilante Martin Alamisi Benz Kaiser Amidu was onto something when he said, the legislature had been crippled by the Orwellian project embarked upon by the covert agent when this insult is critically analyzed.
It will be interesting to see the response or otherwise of the Speaker of the House Edward Doe Adjaho, because this is a direct insult to his person. NPP doesn't approve loans, it is the majority NDC that approves loans whilst sleeping...hahahaha.

Kufuor thought nothing of borrowing over $200 million to build a Presidential palace complex which is of no economic value to our country. He borrowed in excess of $70 million to squander on Ghana@50 with nothing to show for it.

By contrast, this admin has borrowed to invest in infrastructure. This to lay the foundations of socio-economic development of our country. Projects include the Western corridor gas pipeline, 123 community schools, Ridge Hospital expansion, University of Ghana Medical school, Takoradi harbour expansion, Sekondi-Takoradi railway line, new universities in Brong-Ahafo, Volta Region and now Eastern Region, four water projects in Accra-Tema, Kwame Nkrumah Circle interchange, Giffard Road and other major road construction works, Accra, Kumasi and Tamale airport development, Cape Coast stadium, Job 600 among many others.

There is nothing wrong with borrowing provided it is within your ability to repay, and loans are used for sound investments. All the projects listed above have economic value in generating income for our country. The loans will pay for themselves.

Borrowing to perform isn't good leadership and over taxing to survive isn't a good president.

I am a voltaic and l think it's bad to have other citizens coming to vote in our country.l saw it the last time.
You dare not do it in Togo,Benin.lvoria and Burkina Faso.
The syst won't allow because they have national identification syst.
It is right for us as citizens to ask for National identification before voting in 2016.

there is one thing scrutinising and approving a loan that has been sent to parliament by the executive, and its another ball game the executive using the money appropriately to achieve the purpose for which the loan has been contracted. its obvious that loans that has been secured have not been applied very judiciously by the president and his government. if it has ghana should have been different from what we are witnessing. the country has not received value for money on the projects that the government has undertaken.
