This is an idea worth considering.

The National Service program provides very little, if no, experience to graduates. They do little work, if even having to show up to work at all. I've seen it from first hand experience. Now, there will likely be some disciplines where it makes sense (e.g. nursing) but for the most part, it's a waste of taxpayers money and more importantly, the students are no further ahead in getting 'real work' experience.

The technical skill level is very poor in Ghana. Look at what happened when the Brazilian construction company working at Circle in Accra tried to get welders. NO ONE passed the welding test required for doing the work on the overpasses.

The scheme is no longer relevant and irrelevant but as usual this incompetent government which lacks initiative does not have the vision to start the process of winding down the scheme.

Those critisising or even condeming the Prof. do not have an idea of the practical realities of National Service on the ground. A large section of them spend the period doing nothing productive, not to talk of gaining any experience in their profession of choice and for that matter a large chunk of the money spent on the scheme gives the tax payer no value in return. The scheme should either be serously reformed or (prefarably)scrapped.

Lets also consider whether the lack of vocation and technical knowledge left any economic dent in our lives as Ghanaians.Lets also consider the present state of unemployment that left many ex-service personnel with no option than some of them resorting to joining ISIS and then ask ourselves whether the learned prof is making sense.

The well respected professor is creating the wrong impression that national service and vocational training are alternatives. The two are very good and must be encouraged; there is no reason why one must be dropped for the other to thrive.
What the professor should have done was to patiently study how the national service (NS) and other current youth programmes are running before attempting to offer any proposal. If he had done that, he would have seen that NS and YEA are as important as the vocational training he is trying to promote.

Empower the police force instead. The police force with the proper training should be capable of quelling any civil unrest in the country. We should stand resolute and not wage any wars with our neighbouring countries. It is only USA that solves matters with military might.

Like it or not, there will eventually be a coup in Ghana and the soldiers will be used by the so-called Western powers to achieve their aim of overthrowing an elected government if things don't work in their favour.

Expand the police to incorporate all the military servicemen. Make them (the relevant ones) police officers.

The prof is right, scrap the national service and follow his ideas. We can make Ghana proud. Professor Adei (formerly of GIMPA)is another strongman the government needs to listen to when searching for leaders with vision.

Good evening, Prof. In as much as I agree with you on Vocational & Technical education, I do not support the idea of stopping National Service. Though after long years of neglect of Vocational & Technical education, the National service scheme has to be reorganized to benefit the organizations and communities that they serve. In addition, military training must be included to rebuild a degrading moral values we are currently experiencing as a nation.

KNUST should be stopped from running law courses and the like. they should concentrate on technical courses which is the reason why it was set up. polytechnics should solely run technical courses too
