A person is sent to prison "AS PUNISHMENT" and not "FOR PUNISHMENT". That is, his punishment is the imprisonment. He is therefore not to be subjected to any pains whilst in prison as you seem to suggest.

Prisons are meant to rehablitate and not meant to inflict pains on convicts.The aim of any prison regime is to turn criminals around to be useful citizens when they are released back into the society.How prisoners are integrated into the society will determine whether they will continue to be criminals or not.There are some convicts who will choose the prisons to be their homes no matter how best you rehablitate them.These are the serial criminals and they feel better off living in the prison environment where except sex they get eveything free.
