Just look at what is happening in Gambia, Burundi, Zinbabwe, Uganda, Togo and many African countries all because of Nkrumah bad example

dear Samia, you are so wrong, I agree with you that multinationals are not always paying taxes as much as they should. But that is not a Ghanaian but a global problem. Multinational companies are WITHIN every law always comparing tax levels all around the world and thus avoid being over taxed. But as I stated within the international laws. That is a problem not only for small countries but also for the EU, the US and indeed small countries. I know personally that the largest multinationals in Ghana, hardly ever send profits out of the country, simply because African markets are growing and European and other markets are declining or growing at a much slower rate, so why send money out whilst there is a need to invest in the growing African markets?
Last but not least, please come with proof that these companies are not paying local taxes before you accuse well known and reputable companies who are paying a large part of all taxes received in Ghana. If you would check your facts you will come to the conclusion that multinational companies in Ghana are not only better tax payers but also investing more in staff education and in Corporate Social Responsibility programs (CSR)than indigenous owned companies

Companies evade taxes in Ghana and other countries if they pay anything at all. We are talking about mining companies taking away our gold and enjoying free trade zone status and polluting our rivers as well. We are talking about Dr. Arpak, going after companies avoiding paying duty on their imported items stored in bonded warehouses. We are talking about giving 3% royalties to Ghana and taking the rest for yourselves. We are talking about The Profit Sharing Agreement in the oil sector which must replace the Ghana Hybrid Agreement. Yes there are a lot more. So if you go to a village and construct a public toilet, you stand on the hills and shout about Corporate Social responsibility to the community. Give us a break.

I once sent an article to a member of parliament (an accountant) during the Kuffour regime but nothing came out of it. NOTE: The corporations do transfer their profits abroad through a mechanism in tax circles as "TRANSFER PRICING". Sadly enough, Ghana's Transfer Pricing policy(tax) is only one page long & the corporations abuse it at will. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. Thank you Samia for starting the conversation.

What is new news that you may not know is this: 1) if you have a weak government that is dependent on the crumbs and largess of foreign governments, 2) if you have a corrupt system that is rigged, 3) if you have institutions that don't function, and finally, 4) if you have idiots who run your country, you will be victimized not only by multinationals, but by anyone who can wield influence and corrupt your citizenry to their advantage and for their own benefit. 1) So, the foreign governments who give aid will lobby for their multinational corporations to be given breaks; you can't deny it to them because they will cut off your aid (when it makes more sense to tax them and decline the cheap aid) 2) Your weak institutions can't collect the taxes because they don't have a fail-safe system, if any system at all, that cannot be gamed by more sophisticated and well-heeled operators; taxpayers will pay bribes to the tax collectors (much less than the taxes owed) to let their documents disappear, or more brazenly, to state that they've paid up. 3) Even the small time foreign traders/investors (Lebanese, Indians, etc) get away with things they can't get away with anywhere else. You have native businessmen (Banda, Panbros, Trassaco) who are equally culpable for the same tax evasion problem; and 4) the idiots who run the country don't have the technical know-how, sophistication, means, motives and balls to put in place an effective tax legislation and system to collect from everyone equally, so the burden is carried by the poor, voiceless and powerless joe blow. It is no different from sophisticated Wall Street titans like Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, etc. overwhelming the under funded U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission with more money and smarter lawyers, and lobbyists who get Congress to give them tax breaks. The problem is that in Ghana, we have so much poverty the victimization is more immediate and felt more across the board by the system. So, yes, you are right, but the truth is no one wants to pay taxes, so if you have a weak enforcement mechanism where no taxpayer is ever held accountable for non-payment, what do you expect? ONLY A TRUE REVOLUTION WILL SOLVE THIS AND THE MYRIAD SOCIO-POLITICAL PROBLEMS WE FACE IN THIS COUNTRY.
