The madam is right to a point on the question of over borrowing but what else can Ghana do besides that? The infrastructure deficiency is completely overwhelming on Ghana. How can a country which boasts itself as the first African country which attained independence lack basic need such as clean running portable water? Every basic necessity is lacking in Ghana and any gov't which wants to tackle these issues will have to borrow, plain and simple. The fact being that these necessities are pressing and can't wait for gradual resolutions. We also know that almost all the so called rich men in Ghana don't invest in any commodity manufacturing business which is the real engine of development thereby freeing the gov't from these ventures. For example, the energy crisis the country is facing now, is anybody investing in building of any plant? We know we seriously need power and we wait for these foreign entities to invest and then whine about how much it costs. The rich men would rather invest in lazy business such as commerce( buy n sell), hotel, transportation. I don't think we should worry so much about the debt if it is being used for good things. Countries such as Ivory Coast are far ahead of Ghana in development not because they have more natural resources than Ghana but because they are not afraid to borrow. After all didn't we have debt forgiveness the last time we found ourselves in a debt hole? Years ago we didn't even qualify for loans and how much did Ghana develop?

Well it's true that 19 yrs was factually the longest run we had one gov't but don't forget that 11 of those years was under military rule and there's really not much to develop under that kind of system. No serious development partner anywhere in the world would deal with military gov't. The following 8yrs.( which was democratic) is when we saw significant road constructions, rural and expansion of electricity to the north and nationwide. I remember people used to complain that we don't have food to eat but we are building roads and electricity. It's easy to forget these things but they are factual, historical and documented and not hard to find.
The point still remains that any gov't that seek to embark on massive development within the short period of their mandate has no choice but to borrow. I am stressing on this point because I am 100% sure that when npp get the nod, they'll not stop borrowing but continue to borrow. The hypocrisy of politicians is what I detest. Remember when they used to make so much about VAT and fuel prices when they were in opposition in the 90s? When they came to power did they abolish or reduced prices? No it actually went up. So people shouldn't allow themselves to be deceived by campaign and political rhetoric. The minority leader in parliament came out the other day to confirm that structural developments are visible but he's worried about cost. Unfortunately investments in third world countries comes with risks and all of that is factored into the costs. As I said we should look at the long term benefits and I am sure in the long run we'll wean ourselves from borrowing.

Since our school days we have lambasted successive governments for not finding innovative ways of widening the tax net...because all they(both NPP and NDC) have done till date is to increase one tax and lower another depending on which sector of the economy they seek to promote today a government have done the unpopular thing by widening the tax regime by taxing other things hitherto untaxed and we re crying like hell has broken loose...We can talk about the fact that these taxes may not be used well because we all know that in Ghana our leaders dont use public money well...however as to the substantive issue of bringing other financial aspects of our economy under the tax regimes is commendable ...else we leave the payment of taxes to only the few in the formal sector which cannot provide for sustainable development ...think of it we want roads, schools, continuous power supply, hospitals with well paid staff, teachers well motivated, security ...but we dont want taxes ..ridiculous

Many people do not know how gov makes money to spend. All the money spent through the BUDGET comes from TAXES and BORROWING. The taxes are either direct or indirect taxes. In Gh., most individuals and coys who should pay direct taxes do not pay it. Where will the gov get money to finance its budgets? It will do so through INDIRECT taxation. Over to us, GHAHAIANS.
