"British High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin, has said a report published by some newspapers, which suggested that the British government has said Ghana’s register of voters is bloated by 10 per cent is false". Anything, written letter, etc, relating to the false "10% bloat" story the media houses reported was cooked and the commissioner condemns it. What else do you want to hear?

There are some expressions which are described as colloquialism Am sure this gentleman does not really understand or speak good English . Just look at how "deny" was spelt as "denie" . It says a lot

The report indicated that a letter which was written to NPP petitioners in UK was intercepted by media outlet....... here the ambassador is not even talking about any letter being written to any group of petitioners e.t.c. the British embassy mentioning "misrepresentation of what we have said" should give you a clew there was nothing written to any group and therefore that report was completely false. The went further to say that Ghana’s voter register is a domestic issue for Ghana’s Electoral Commission to consider with political parties. All these points to the fact that they do not interfere in Ghana electoral issues. Enough for the wise to know that all these will not help NPP.

LONTO-BOY, when I read the report on Ghanaweb this morning, I realised it came from the former NPP Chairman of UK & Ireland branch (Mr Kwesi Atta-Krufi Hayford). Again, the Echo is not a paper that could intercept correspondence on behalf of the UK Prime Minister and the language is not what the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) would use so I became suspicious.

I therefore contacted the Newsdesk of the FCO in London by e-mail with web links of the media reports from Ghanaweb, Peaceonline and Dailyguideonlone, where copies were posted.

I telephoned FCO's Newsdesk 30 minutes later (at midday) and I was told that my e-mail had been passed onto the Policy Unit for investigations. I suspect that is when the High Commissioner's attention was drawn to to the reports in Ghana and he issued the denial.

I phoned again after 2.00pm to ask them if the denial by the UK Higher Commissioner in Accra is true and the officer I spoke to asked if I am a journalist. To which I responded, no but do post articles on socio-economic and political issues on Ghana and wanted confirmation or otherwise of the report for an article. He told me that the matter is still under investigations and someone will definitely come back to me but I am yet to get a call back.

I agree with you the opposition is attempting to draw the UK government into the politics of the Voters Register for their political expediency and that backfired. Why did Mr Kwesi Atta-Krufi Hayford not publish the said letter from the FCO that he quoted extensively from?

Kofi, Mr Kwesi Atta-Krufi Hayford and his bunch of desperadoes indeed presented a petition before the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) over the so-called bloated voters register and got the same response as splashed in here by the British High Commissioner to Ghana. Instead of keeping their mouths shut by swallowing their collective stupid pride, they rather tried pulling a fast one on Ghanaians, forgotten "what time it is in Ghana."

Don't let us get carried away to throw away the baby with the bathwater. In spite of our difficult and bitter past with the UK, resulting from her Colonization of us, we still can build a better and mutually beneficial relationship between us. That is why I, and many others, have been on the case of the High Commissioner lately for certain remarks attributed to him that suggest he sides with only the current NPP-Leadership in our local Politics.

But what we need to establish between the 2 Nations is a transparent, truly cordial relationship that is not vulnerable to clandestine undercutting by either side. The longstanding notion that the UK has a preferential favorite political side in our local Politics that she always hopes to see, and would work for in various ways, to bring to Power, must be permanently diffused.

In fact, there are a few among our Politicians who have always claimed to have, or would always want the Public to believe they have, a special privileged relationship with the UK and the USA Authorities that earns them the exclusive preference by those Powers to be the leaders of Ghana.

Most of these Ghanaian Politicians, unfortunately, reside in NPP. There is a certain trail of that attitude among them to the period leading to our Independence. Some Historians have cited the alleged attempt by Danquah to get the UK to postpone our Independence, and the eventual offering of asylum to Nkrumah's Opposition members in UK, as evidence of that attitude.

In today's terms, we have the NPP Groups in UK and USA claiming a certain access exclusively carved out for them to the Corridors of Power in these Powerful countries. So, they often set up events to involve a few British and American Officials and quickly capitalize on any of the comments those Officials make to represent the formal position of UK and America on Ghana's internal Politics.

As much as the UK and USA prefer we stay democratic and grow in that dispensation, I don't think it is in their ultimate interest to align with any particular Ghanaian Party. The current Gitmo 2 issue should be a lesson to both the UK and USA, that the pendulum of closer cooperation could swing from one Party to another, for various reasons, some as whimsical as a parochial political dream of a leading Politician to become the next President.

We see such parochial interest in Akufo-Addo showing his discontent with the Gitmo 2 arrangement between the NDC Administration and the USA, which the current Ghanaian Gov't deems as helping out a friendly American Gov't out of a difficult situation.

One may be tempted to cite Nana's opposition to the Gitmo 2 acceptance in Ghana as a show of his genuine patriotism which he places over the interests of the Americans, and claiming he is listening to the wailing of the masses to reject the Gitmo 2. Really?

All indications more strongly suggest that Akufo-Addo was in selfish pursuant of his ambition to become the next President by feeling the direction of wind, the likely popular, but not necessarily correct, view of the panicking general Public over the Gitmo 2.

I bet my bottom dollar that had he been the President of Ghana, Nana would have gone along with the USA to accept the Gitmo 2, too, but in a more clandestine and obscure manner than Mahama's that the Public might never find out in time to challenge it.

Akufo-Addo is more secretive and authoritative in his leadership style. And he loves to please the West with his presumed exclusive appreciation of Capitalistic Democracy. Winning the West's favor has been his lifelong and principal political modus operandi. Yeah, right!

Anyway, Ghana-UK relationship would be more mutually beneficial if it were not built around a few favored individuals. I hope it isn't.

There has been a full and public debate on the current register and the Electoral Commission recently published a report on this.

The British Government is clear that the forthcoming elections in Ghana are a sovereign, domestic Ghanaian issue. We will remain entirely neutral and happily work with any democratically elected government." Why are some people think they are the only elites to have power than others? We are Ghanaians with equal rights, and no one is above other.
