The thing is this free roaming cattle herding is a thing of the past, there has to be drastic changes to this cattle herding business.

On one hand whereas many of the cattle herders are Fulanis, the cattle they herd, to a large extent belong to some Ghanaians or will be slaughtered and sold for meat consumption in Ghana. Secondly, since we have signed on to this Ecowas protocol of free movement of people, goods, and services in the Ecowas region, we cannot stop the Fulanis and their cattle from coming to Ghana, likewise they cannot stop business and economic migrants from each other's countries from going anywhere within the subregion. A comprehensive approach ought to have been done by now, to educate especially the herders on not allowing their movable economic units (cows) to destroy somebody's immovable economic units (crops).

The solution may lie in adopting stationary cattle ranching or kraals as compared to nomadic grazing. USA or Canada has millions of cows, more than all of West Africa combined, but I am yet to see one single cow roaming about and helping themselves on other peoples' farms. For starters those cows will be dead meat on sight for trespassing. Grass on somebody's land has economic value. You cannot just move in with your cows and help yourselves on it. We may have to designate some areas for grazing but in all that won't be enough......there is an economic opportunity for people to go into hay or grass farming which can be harvested, baled and sold to stationary cattle ranchers.

The Agogo farmers have a right to their food crops and I wouldn't go as far as suggesting to them of spraying pesticides and ashes on their crops, but then they may very well resort to that if their government is failing them.

I have lived in Agogo before. All manner of people from Ghana and beyond live there, attracted to the place by its famous hospital and also agriculture. The people are among the most welcoming of people in Ghana. To use the word xenophobia to describe how they feel let down by their own government and therefore have to resort to self-defence is most unfortunate. There is a large zongo community over there, why is nobody attacking them, if the indigenes are so xenophobic? Aning should stop being armchair critic and go down to Agogo to see things for himself before he criticizes. No community will sit idle by while their properties are trespassed over and their women are raped or maimed by nomadic cattle herders. Screw diplomatic niceties. Aning should place the blame at the foot of the lethargic government which has even resorted to importing Gitmo prisoners into our peace loving country.

Just two names will suffice for now; Asuma Banda and John Dramani Mahama are just two individuals for whom the Fulani herdsmen work for tendering to their cattle.
This is a situation that needs to be laid directly at the doorstep of John Dramani Mahama and nobody else.

You why ???? because most people in government and higher places,i:e chiefs,the rich in those societies etc are major stock holders who makes money out of these brutalities. We never heard any chief in these areas being shot or sexually molested!!!
As usual it is the poor man who suffers all the time...We all need to wake up from our sleep sometimes and act...Wake up People!!!!!

How do governments in west Africa not recognize Fulani incursions for the national security risk they pose? Crossing borders with impunity, brandishing weapons in front of local people, destroying community property,..., are the acts of a hostile invasion force.

Local officials are obviously incapable of defending their own residents, and the police who haven't been bribed into submission are likewise afraid to engage them.

The state risks losing credibility by not taking this menace seriously.

Ghana (really, West Africa) needs Special Task Forces to drive these infiltrators out of the country -- US and Israeli expertise will be useful. Direct Army engagement with these bandits has the risk of spiraling into a full-blown insurgency. (That mistake is being played out in Mexico right now).
