Brochure fiasco: Kenyan newspaper asks if Ghana grabbed Uhuru Kenyatta

Ghana made a farce of its Independence Day celebrations after government officials confused Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta to be their own head of state in the official programme.

The brochure for the event had other embarrassing errors, including spelling mistakes and wrong facts about Ghana’s economic status and location on the world map.

Images of the brochure distributed to guests during the 59th Independence Day celebrations in the capital city, Accra, have gone viral and exposed the Ghanaian government to ridicule.

In the brochure, President Kenyatta is referred to as the “President of the Republic of Ghana.”

A journalist based in Ghana attached to Euronews shared a photo of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Ghanaian counterpart John Dramani Mahama sharing alight moment during the ceremony while looking at the error-filled brochure.

@julietbawuah tweeted; “When #Kenya Prez, Uhuru #Kenyatta saw he was President of #Ghana in the official #Ghanaat59 program.hehe.”

Other errors noted in the brochure included wrong facts about the country’s economic status.

“Ghana is now recognized as having attained low-income status in the world,” the brochure stated in part. The west African country is actually considered a middle-income economy.

The brochure also stated that; “Ghana is strategically positioned on the equator making her the centre of the of the globe. And like the sun, she radiates light to all parts of the world!”

Ghana is nowhere near the equator. The authors of the brochure probably meant the Greenwich Prime Meridian that passes near its eastern border with Togo.

The meridian is a geographic co-ordinate that divides the world into two and is used to determine time zones.

A letter from Ghana’s Information Services Department (ISD) has since apologised for the numerous errors in the brochure for an event considered one of the country’s most significant celebrations in the calendar.

But even the apology bore a wrong date, written on January 12, 2016 instead of March 7, 2016.

It stated that “The Department, which authored the content of the brochure, accepts responsibility and wishes to unreservedly apologise for the development.”

Kenya's $50 billion megaprojects

1. Mombasa rail station -- Kenya is already an infrastructure powerhouse of East Africa -- leading the region for investment. But the next few years may see a quantum leap forward, with tens of billions of dollars to be spent on some of the world's most spectacular transport, energy and technology projects -- such as the new Mombasa rail station (above).
Through a program entitled Kenya Vision 2030, the government hopes to deliver a "newly industrialized, middle-income country providing a high quality of life to all its citizens by 2030."
Whether this ambitious goal will actually be achieved remains to be seen. But the following ventures certainly bear the potential to transform the landscape.

2. Standard Gauge Railway --The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) has been described as the most ambitious project in Kenya's independent history -- replacing the antiquated tracks left by the British regime.
Around $4 billion has been invested in 600 kilometers of raised track connecting the hub cities of Nairobi and Mombasa, but it is hoped the line will be a net contributor to the economy for years to come. The SGR should be open for business in 2017.
The SGR project also includes the construction of state-of-the-art new passenger stations at Nairobi, Voi, and Mombasa.

3. Voi Railway Station -- The SGR project also includes the construction of state-of-the-art new passenger stations at Nairobi, Voi, and Mombasa.

4. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport -- Jomo Kenyatta International -- Kenya's premier airport -- is to receive multiple upgrades.
A new greenfield terminal designed by architects Pascall Watson will be the largest in Africa when it opens in 2017, serving 20 million passengers a year, at a cost of around $650 million.
A second runway will be inaugurated the same year.

5. Lamu Port -- The multi-faceted Lamu Port and Lamu-Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSSET) project is as big as the name suggests, with an outlay of $23 billion across three countries.
The city of Lamu at the southern end of the Corridor is a cornerstone of the project. It will be transformed into a trade hub through the construction of a new 32-berth port, which will be used to supply locations along the line.

6. LAPSSET Pipeline -- One of the most lucrative commodities to travel the route will be crude oil, through a new pipeline that connects Kenya's oil fields in Turkana Basin with Ugandan and South Sudanese sites. A new refinery will also be constructed.

7. Highways -- Highways are another key component of Lapsset, with hundreds of kilometers of pristine, new road laid to facilitate transport of goods and people.
The Isiolo -- Marsabit -- Moyale stretch (above) has been completed, connecting to Ethiopia, and facilitating travel to Kenya's safari parks.

8. Resort cities -- The LAPSSET project will also see three resort cities constructed in Lamu, Isiolo and Lokichogio.
The new sites will be pitched at affluent visitors -- with luxury hotels, entertainment and wildlife reserves.

9. Konza Tech City -- The much-hyped Konza Tech City - or "Silicon Savannah" - is hoped to be a world-class hub of entrepreneurship.
The $15 billion site, set in 5,000 acres to the south of Nairobi, will accommodate almost 200,000 people, complete with universities, research facilities, and IT centers.

10. Konza Tech City -- Several delays have marred the project and discouraged some investors, but the government maintains the site will be operational in April 2017.

11. Geothermal energy -- Kenya has embraced geothermal energy in a big way, aiming to serve one-quarter of its energy needs through this source.
New ventures such as the Ol-Karia IV power plant (pictured) make it one of the world's leading producers, and investment is set to increase.

12. Isiolo airport -- Apart from Jomo Kenyatta, several smaller airports are undergoing major upgrades.
The provincial Isiolo airport is receiving a new terminal building and a new runway, in anticipation of higher visitor numbers.

13. Two Rivers Mall -- The largest mall in East Africa will open in Nairobi in March. The 62,000 square meter facility will include housing, hotels, office space and -- of course -- extravagant shopping.

This is a monumental mistake and it shows how our leaders do not scrutinize things before they append their names and signatures.

We have hundreds of Presidential staffers running around the Flagstaff house behaving like beheaded chickens and none of these idiots recognized those mistakes?

The Chairman of the planning committee when asked about this new record set by John Dramani Mahama's administration said they should ask Stan Dogbe who was responsible for the brochures.
The letter head on which the apology was rendered to Ghanaians, it has been revealed to be fake.
Again these incidents places the direction this country is headed right in the center of the debate, and shows clearly, there is a fantastic, earth shattering and unprecedented levels of mind-boggling incompetence, dangerous ineptitude and mediocrity on a scale never before witnessed in the governance of this country and this has translated to where Ghana finds itself today; a fast sinking banana republic of senselessness.
Change, Change, Change must come to this country in November. This govt of John Dramani Mahama has traversed beyond the point of being a joke and it is not funny anymore.

Ghana made a farce of its Independence Day celebrations after government officials confused Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta to be their own head of state in the official programme.

The brochure for the event had other embarrassing errors, including spelling mistakes and wrong facts about Ghana’s economic status and location on the world map.

Images of the brochure distributed to guests during the 59th Independence Day celebrations in the capital city, Accra, have gone viral and exposed the Ghanaian government to ridicule.

In the brochure, President Kenyatta is referred to as the “President of the Republic of Ghana.”

A journalist based in Ghana attached to Euronews shared a photo of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Ghanaian counterpart John Dramani Mahama sharing alight moment during the ceremony while looking at the error-filled brochure.

@julietbawuah tweeted; “When #Kenya Prez, Uhuru #Kenyatta saw he was President of #Ghana in the official #Ghanaat59 program.hehe.”

Other errors noted in the brochure included wrong facts about the country’s economic status.

“Ghana is now recognized as having attained low-income status in the world,” the brochure stated in part. The west African country is actually considered a middle-income economy.

The brochure also stated that; “Ghana is strategically positioned on the equator making her the centre of the of the globe. And like the sun, she radiates light to all parts of the world!”

Ghana is nowhere near the equator. The authors of the brochure probably meant the Greenwich Prime Meridian that passes near its eastern border with Togo.

The meridian is a geographic co-ordinate that divides the world into two and is used to determine time zones.

A letter from Ghana’s Information Services Department (ISD) has since apologised for the numerous errors in the brochure for an event considered one of the country’s most significant celebrations in the calendar.

But even the apology bore a wrong date, written on January 12, 2016 instead of March 7, 2016.

It stated that “The Department, which authored the content of the brochure, accepts responsibility and wishes to unreservedly apologise for the development.”

This is just a clear example of the incompetence we are fazed with in the various departments and institutions. I remember the meteorological service also predicting a possible storm over Accra during the programme. Up to now we are still awaiting the storm. Incredible. In fact, even the tomato seller in the Tamale Central Market could have manned such simple editing. I think the government should employ the service of the Arts 'A' pupils of Ghana Senior High in Tamale, to do a better work on the geographical position of Ghana in 2017, if God wills.

GHANA IS NOW TAKEN AS AN OBJECT OF MOCKERY. LITERATURE SHOULD BE COMPULSORY AND ENFORCED IN ALL NDC'S FACILITIES INCLUDING THE FLAGSTAFF HOUSE TO AVERT FUTURE OCCURRENCE OF GRAMMATIC MISTAKES IN THEIR NEXT INDEPENDENCE DAY BROCHURE IN THE YEAR 3000.

This is incompetence at the highest level. Don't they have prove readers at where the brochure was printed? This is a true reflection of the state of affairs of the current NDC administration. Vote them out!!
