DR BAWUMIA ,THE PROPHET, ON THE $250 MILLION NDC TOOK OUT OF THE $1BILLION EUROBOND FROM BOG AND DEPOSITED FOOLISHLY & NONSENSICALLY AT THE UNITED BANK OF AFRICA (UBA)--------READ BELOW------ Beyond the issue of legality, there is the issue of prudence in the management of Ghana’s resources. How do you go and borrow money for 10.75% (US dollar) and give it to someone to lend it to you at over 20% (GHC)? In effect you are paying over 30%! Assuming stable exchange rates, Ghana will be paying additional interest of at least $50 million a year on this transaction. It really is reckless. The government is claiming that the funds were “idle”. Really? What does that mean? Why do you borrow funds and pay interest on it if you do not have use for them at the moment? It is clear that the GIIF does not have a portfolio of projects ready to invest in and it is weird to allocate a whopping sum of $250 million to them at this time. Is the Minister aware that the country owes N-Gas some $100 million? What about other contractors who are owed money by the government? How can you owe so much, have so much to do and yet claim to have “idle” borrowed funds? The allocation of such an amount to a private bank also has major macroeconomic consequences for a relatively small economy like Ghana. It increases the deposits of the banking system and ultimately the money supply. It has inflationary and exchange rate depreciation consequences and would make it more difficult for the government to meet its inflation target. I am surprised that the government is oblivious of these consequences. The Funds should stay at the Bank of Ghana. After all the Bank of Ghana, on its own or through its external fund managers of the caliber of internationally reputable banks like UBS, JP Morgan, Citibank, Merrill Lynch etc. can undertake whatever investment of the country’s foreign exchange that the government would like it to undertake

You're a contradiction in motion Kwasi Adade. You claim the money should have been left at the Bank of Ghana but in your very last sentence and with poor logical argument advice that the money could or should be invested via external fund managers at private institutions such as UBS, JP Morgan, Citibank Merrill Lynch and others.

Since you want readers to know you're well read and know your way around economic/finance please answer me this:
1. Would the money still stay in with BoG if invested via those banks and financial institutions you so highly recommend?
2. Which institution brought global markets to its knees in late 2007/2008?
3. How many of these firms you recommend have not been sued by the US or UK governments for fraud, tax evasion and other consumer-related malpractices?

Stop being a parrot or troll who goes around bashing the NDC government on flimsy excuses and useless arguments. The Kufour NPP administration entrenched the kind of useless government activities when the Kufour administration failed to change the useless 1992 constitution of the 4th republic that has given rise to unbridled corruption of governments. Do you know of any government administration in Ghana that is free of thieves? Is there a different name for stealing US$1 million or US$250 million from government? They are both called thieves and the NPP and NDC are staffed with thieves.

The money sit in an account for one and a half years because because the board and other staff compliment were being put together .we now have aboard and an acting managing director who opens an account at UBA and the money transferred into the account of the investment fund who in turn invest the funds .what is wrong with this ? Did the government directly borrow from UBA? As being peddled by bawumia ? No every bank in Ghana bids at the close of every week on theirs and behalf of their costumers for treasury bills -this is not a direct borrowing as bawumia would make us believe . Remember where the$250 million is deposited there or not UBA will continue to purchase t- bills on the behalf of their costumers . Even granted that the funds were idle at BoG (which definitely not) it would have been prudent than placing them at UBA for a return of 11.5% and turning round to borrow via treasury bill at a cost of over 20.0%. What an inept, incompetent financial decision by the so called financial gurus, if there is no diabolical agenda underpinning the transaction. The right policies need to be adopted to uphold credibility in the finances of the nation.
