He is now thinking by saying so he will be one of the targets of NPP for appointment should they win the election but everyone should watch these chameleons very well,they are very dangerous.

According to him, students admitted into the University after completing the four-year education cycle in SHS performed far better than those who were educated under the three-year system.

There have been arguments whether or not government should reintroduce the four-year academic period for Senior High Schools which was first introduced under the erstwhile Kufuor administration.

Corney, it is same with Prof Yankah who was his Pro-VC until his retirement and now with Central Univ. During the time he was at UG, Prof Yankah never asked that the scarce GETFUND which can't support infrastructural projects in public institutions should be extended to private institutions. He did not make that statement during his tenure at Legon because there are many uncompleted Getfund projects at UG and other campuses due inadequate funds. But today as President of Central Univ he is singing this song of extending Getfund to private institutions to satisfy his boss Otabil and also to be welcomed by the Council of Private Tertiary Institutions or whatever their name is.

I have heard Prof Yankah questioned the standards of the private universities in the past and was a champion in their being affiliated with UG and other public universities in order to be groomed for sometime before gaining autonomy. But today in his position at Central, he questions this policy and even criticised the setting up UHAS and the one at Sunyani.

These supposed professors must be watched carefully in their utterances. They are worse than politicians.

Some schools like Adisco, Mfantsepem, Aburi Girls,Legon Presec, St, Roses and a few others can do it in three years but many schools cannot do it. Even the three years is actually is not three years. Just imagine and compare the standards of those who studied for the GCE "O" and "A" level to the present SHS that we have. I handled both GCE and SHS and know the differences when it comes to standards. I was one of the advocates of a four year SHS but the issue became political and the hands of educationists were tied down. In most cases, education moves with maturation.

These students will take three yrs to write their WASSCE or whatever and spend a number of years for remedial classes. No wonder a number of remedial schools have sprang up all over the country, how come? The educational reforms under the PNDC introduced the JSS/SSS to replace the Middle School/Common Entrance/Secondary School. Thus MSLC/O Level/A Level were replaced with BECE and WASSCE now SSSCE. In short the reforms brought in Primary 1-6, JSS 1-3 which constitute Basic School which was mandated by law to be free and compulsory. One sits and earns BECE at the end of the 9yrs.

From there one goes further based on outcome of the BECE to gain admission to Snr Sec School (SSS) to do a further 3yrs and based on performance continue to tertiary institutions - universities, polytechnics, etc. to do a 3 or 4 years to obtain Diplomas, Higher National Diplomas (HND),Bachelors, etc.

Now under the Kuffuor govt, they extended the secondary school to 4yrs and renamed the Jnr Sec Sch (JSS) to Jnr High Sch (JHS) and the Snr Sec Sch (SSS) to Snr High School (SHS). Some subjects were dropped and new ones were introduced.

Now when Mills came to power, he reverted the SHS to 3yrs but maintained the names JHS and SHS. Again some subjects were dropped and some new ones introduced at the JHS.

Hope I have offered Charles and others some info. Others may amend where I might have had it wrong. I am no expert and thus have not offered any opinions of mine on the 3 or 4 yrs. Typical of Ghanaweb, people who share divergent view will rain insults, just like that.

Why produce so many graduates, who are half-baked, unprepared and darn ignorant about many subjects, can't think logically, can't add and subtract properly, can't speak/read or write English well out into society where JOBS are scarce more than Gold?

I came out of the really good old system: 5-year secondary education; 2-year sixth form; and a 4-year undergraduate education for a bachelor’s degree. Even with that background, it wasn’t that easy for advance studies abroad. Look at how many of our leaders in parliament and in government, who can't read or write or SPEAK the English language well. Some even have huge analytical & logical reasoning problems.

Therefore, our leaders should take notice of what some smart intellectuals are saying and GO THE HECK BACK to the 4-year cycle, which can help prepare the students for the harsh and highly competitive employment market in today's world. Where are the jobs for these quickly overproduced graduates?

In some advance countries, students who are born in the country and are unable to attain the required grade for the English language are put into special English class for them to work their way up before they are introduce to their main course studies in Colleges and Universities.

Like you saying, English and French been 2nd language for every Ghanaian, the 3-year SSS course is just a shamble which its future effects would be irreparable. I have the chance to visit a school where a class was having a "Social Studies Class" and on the Writing Board - the Teacher had put down "Minerals that are Mined in Ghana as the Topic" To my surprise, the Teacher had listed - coke, Fanta, sprite, odoka and nsa fufuo(palm wine)as minerals. Just see the trend of education kids of this time are receiving. About 90% of Ghanaians will go to a drinking bar and when they are there to buy non-alcoholic beverage, for them to say soda or soft drink will rather say mineral. The society have absorbed some wrong words and messages for a long time that they don't see any wrong - saying or using them in their daily expressions. We have a long way to go.

It's time we stopped toying with the educational system in Ghana and using the kids as guinea pigs for experiments. Whatever is missing in the 3 year program should be fixed. I do not believe that Prof Ary et en has any solid statistics to back his claim that the 4 years do better than the 3 year Senior High School and whether or not the us a statistically significant difference between the two programs. As a scientist I expect the Vice Chancellor to back his claim with solid statistics. What is his sample size for both programs. There are equally students who gave entered the university from second year of Senior High School to do pretty tough programmes in engineering and a plied sciences and have excelled. But just because a few people haven't done well dies cast a blanket over the woke program. We need hard evidence in student statistics and the metrics that were used to determine which programme performed better. That information doesn't help anybody but rather too generic and of no statistical significance. It should be dismissed till proven with hard core statistics based on students admitted to all programs in Universities in Ghana and not only Legon.

Prof, why do you have to speak now? You know your term ends soon so you are speaking now. This means you were afraid to have spoken earlier on. Now that you are about to go, you are now making noise. This is why we are not making progress. People like who have to speak against wrong decisions of government keep quiet because of your bread. You were your bread was going to be stopped if you had spoken earlier. Shame unto you for opening your mouth to speak now. Shame.

Same about the tollbooth thing with the BNI. Why is that you have made the comment that action should have been taken against the destroyer? Why now and not when the destruction took place? Again, shame unto you.

This professor is in a hurry to join the political train as his days at the university of ghana are numbered. He is welcome. Why is he so vociferous on this vexed matter now? where was he all these years? Academics who are totally fused with politics will cease to amaze the society. Prof. hurry up and join the political campaign of your preferred party, that is your human rights and choice, nobody can take it away from you. May be you will become the education minister, after all, one of your own is now a minister of education. Good luck as you exit university of ghana as the vice chancellor.
