Professor, I respect you but your take on this issue leaves much to be desired. Polytechnics and most technical institutions have existed in Ghana since pre independence. Ghana and Ghanaians have not benefitted from them with ONDs and HNDs. What was your reaction when parliament decided to import furniture from India or China. There are gifted artisans and craftsmen in Ghana without education and because of that no one notices them. Those of us who left Ghana in the 70s and 80s with just Certificates like OND ,HND in various fields like Medical laboratory technology ,Meteorology, Science laboratory technology etc find our counter parts from India ,China, Phillipines and US, to mention a few that they are no match to us in terms of academic knowledge and practicals. But because they have degrees, all available higher positions go to them while they consult us on difficult tasks and introduction of new procedures. Converting Polytechnics into degree awarding institutions should not change the ultimate goal of those institutions. All we need to do is to resource them and task them with productivity. Degrees will make the products of our polytechnics more confident , competitive and valuable internationaly

Prof. Aryeetey should not turn this into politics. Polytechnics & Vocational schools should still be part of Ghana's educational system at the secondary level; while technical universities focus on providing tertiary education.

The job market would then be levelled for all, except that the Polytechnic graduate would be preferred in the job market than the traditional University graduate because of the technical component of their training. The final worry by the Prof. is that, his children who would have graduated from the University would then find it very difficult to compete with the Polytechnic graduate. Simply, the table would be turning round. For this reason only, I say well done to the Government.

Prof Aryeetey is entitled to his opinion. The fact that he is the vice chancellor of the UG does not mean that he is the depository of all knowledge. Germany which is the most advanced country technologically speaking in Europe has a similar set up. This set up places it far ahead of any country in Europe. The conversion is based on advice and support from Germany. Time will tell whoever is right. The government should ignore the criticism and forge ahead with the programme.

This is what deceive the Ghanaian minds, the moment they have the degrees and are positioned they turned to know all describing themselves as centres or depository of all knowledge hence the intervention of the Prof Aryeetey with the retrogressive move.

These days the so called educated minds in Ghana upon reading the feelings of the people because of the economic situations, they like to comment negatively against the govt. over issues which are even very meaningful and productive in the long run for our nation.

This is what you see the Prof Aryeetey bidding for and likely for the NPP and others of similar poor mindset for technical schools, and this presently had made you Samson a bigger man than him simply because you have vision than him concerning the future of our technical education.

Finally make your own accessment and see if these guys; the Prof and others including top political gurus have their children in technical schools. They do not care for technical education bcos they underrate it, and if so why wolfcry comments to create confusion around the president's good move for the technical studies in Ghana.

For those who think the Professor is wrong, all I can say is that you do not understand the workings of industry. The problem that arises here is that our industries have suffered for so long people have forgotten the use of technicians in the maintenance of equipment. Yes you may need a Technical University, but soon and very soon, these graduates are going to feel frustrated when they find out they will be recruited to provide their core mandate. That is to repair plant equipment. That is the core business of the technician. All of you cannot be supervisors. Nobody is going to employ them to sit in airconditioned offices all day.

When the question of academic progression come in where does those with HND stand.
Do you know that degree is now the cut off point of employment in Ghana no matter the class. Do you know that a lot of HND holders have changed their field of study to do other courses in the universities.
How can someone with degree in African studies be a manager over HND Accountancy holder in Accounting Firm or HND Electronic engineering in an engineering firm. What prevent the HND holder in technical field to progress to even MSc in a given field. Why do we always want to keep people under our knees and lord over.
Upon all the graduates from Legon and other universities what has happened to Ghana. The same old story because right university you begin to plant the seed of extortions in the students with academic this academic that. What kind of mentality do our acdmia have. Prof. be in your lane and continue training graduates who will only wear suits to offices under tress.
Let give it a try. Open your mind up for innovations.

What the government fail to realise is that universities core function is to broaden the minds of its graduates to make them critical thinkers and not to be readily prepared for industries. Industries work with professions who require professional training.

In the UK, many polytechnics were converted to universities back in the early 90s for a very good reason. It had become very clear that many polytechnics were carrying out more research work than many universities and as a result, industries had a preference to poly graduates due to the fact that most of their courses were sandwich courses i.e combined accademic work with practical industrial training. So the decision was made to make the two types of institutions equal by given polys university status. At the same time, govt funding was brought to the same level to enable a level play field. Ghanaian polys are nowhere near there. The decision to convert polys to unis, thus empowering them to award degrees will only serve to dilute the value of a degree in Ghana.

I suggest our VC gives himself the benefit of the report, which studied the Technical Education up to the University level in Germany, UK, the US and Kenya, before coming out with the criteria for conversion. I have read the report. I think it will help liberate technical education from people like Prof Aryetey who believe technical education shd not go beyond a certain level. Prof is kicking against it without a single reference to report of the Committee and what he thinks is wrong with it. It is such mentality that has kept developing countries like Ghana where they are now. Sorry Prof.

Looking at the roadmap that leads to the conversion, the team did the best for the country. Let's only hope and pray it does not become a 9 day wonder. How many of our mechanics at magazine has diploma or degree, yet the best mechanics are found there. Our polytechnics has been in existence for long with no value. We have students completing polytechics with no practical knowledge. Looking at the curricula for the technical universities, competence based training (CBT) has been much emphasized and industry has been much involved. In the sense that the students are not only going to study only in the classrooms but almost 2thirds of the study will be done on the field. You can't graduate without proving your practical competence in your field of study. And I think with this our industries are going to be more resourced with the right personnel and the probability of graduates seeking for office work will be brought to the barest minimum. Hope government shows commitment and industry plays its role well.
