Social media lies about my gov't too much - Prez Mahama

President John Mahama has accused some critics of hiding behind social media to peddle inaccurate information about his government and also hurl lies at his administration.

Mr Mahama complained that his appointees are always attacked on social media by anonymous accounts on social media, especially when issues of corruption are topical.

According to Mr Mahama, people use corruption as political propaganda without backing their claims with facts.

Speaking to a gathering of Ghanaian citizens living in London recently, President Mahama said: “Perception can be heightened because it’s been discussed long in the media. And when you have a country like Ghana where everybody is free to discuss corruption, if you wake up and you are angry with your husband or wife, you take it out on the president, abuse him on the radio. When you have that kind of society, there are all kinds of issues that come up," adding that: “And then we have the addition of social media. Because of the anonymity, people just fix some blatant lies and put it on WhatsApp. And, sometimes, they are so creative, and I said these people the way they are creative, if they channel this creativity into lucrative things Ghana would not be where it is.”

“They would create something about you and if it is not because I am myself and I know that it is not true, anybody who sees it would believe it. We have all that floating in the system and all that, so, it heightens people’s perception about corruption. And, so, it is easy to say that there is more corruption in this regime than in that regime. Where would comparison of corruption take us? It won’t take us anywhere,” he emphasised.

The president further said: "The important thing is to put in the systems that prevent corruption taking place. I have the political willingness to expose it and investigate it and sanction it and I have said I am willing if any allegations are made. A lot of times somebody comes and says: ‘Oh this guy, he is stealing,’ and I ask him: ‘How do you know?’ [And he replies:] ‘You put your ears on the ground. Your ministers are all thieves.’

‘Which one? Tell me so that I can get the person.’ ‘Na wonnte – to wit – [Don't you hear?] You don’t listen. You are not listening to these things.’

“You know, you need to deal with it in a more systematic manner and that’s why we are putting in place a legislation that protects whistle blowers, because whistle blowers are important,” he said.

Mr Mahama assured Ghanaians that the Attorney General’s (AG) Department was working on the Whistle Blower’s Amendment Bill and Witness Protection Scheme for easy flow of information.

“The person who sees corruption happening, you must put in the regulation that ensures that when he has blown the whistle, he is protected," he said.

It is good for you the so called MPS because you think African democracy is like that of the West that you are foolishly coping without references to your culture and tradition of dependence, that your supporters will depend on you with all their problems and will even never see the goodness that you do for them at the end of it all.

Is it not the same Mahama is doing and all of you are pretending he is doing nothing? That is what the supporters do to the MPS that is why they die of the ungrateful reactions from supporters and DEBTS they owe to settle.

That is the culture of Ghanaians' minds. It appears to me that Ursula is not smart because she should have known this long ago if she is really acquainted with the Ghanaian primitive mentality politics that abuse and blame game is the order of the day without giving realistic account of the realities of politics in Ghana.

It is unfortunate that politics which is morality based on togetherness in building a nation and manage it with a sense of unity had rather become a thing of destruction, meaning the so called politicians are doing the opposite of the real aim of politics.

Why should not the sopporters depend on you for the solution of all their troubles/problems when you the politicians had failed to be united without considering one's party affiliation to teach the voters/supporters to understand what politics actually stands for.

Meanwhile, l can not blame you since you the very politicians even don't understand the politics you have involved yourselves in. It is time you the politicians learn how to be united in changing the mindsets of your supporters if not you will all die one after the other with high blood pressure due to DEBTS that follow you.

Can Ghanaians understand where the corruption is coming from? Politicians ought to continue to corrupt more than before if this trend of chasing MPS with unnecessary expendenditures/expenses is nationally brought under control.

The first diabolical corrupt decree you rubber-stamped directly after being sworn in in 2013 was to double your salaries, and even back-date Mahama's to cover the whole period he was Mills' vice - because he claimed because Mills had had health issues, he Mahama had virtually been doing the job of president and vice concurrently. If that was not corruption of the highest order, nothing else will ever be!
Kofi Adams was claiming this morning that the president had instructed ECG to install pre-paid meters in all ministries and government departments, and for that reason, ministers and MPS are also paying their own electricity bills! Foolish as he is, he thinks he can fool the whole country, too. Whoever decreed that the private residence of ministers and MPs are all government buildings? There is no justification for the 45 or so litres of fuel MPs draw every week (or is it every day) except that it is all part of the corruption in the system.
Who knows about the other perks that are hidden from the public?
Ursula should refrain from trying to hoodwink our suffering folks into believing that their MPs are in the same boat as they are! far from it. The MPs are among the few corrupt individuals milking the state funds! Let all the MPs resign from their seats because of the debts theyb are surrounded by and allow others who would not mind enduring the hardships MPs go through to take over. And Ghana would be a better place for us all.
