  The writer of this article asks the question: What does African Union Day mean to you? My answer is, the African Union Day means the sweat and sacrifice of one person, and one person alone, Dr. Nkrumah, and the extravagant use of Ghana's resources to create another African behemoth boondoggle. This is what African Union Day means to me.
  
  Not once did the writer of this article, a Ghanaian I must say, make mention the name of Dr. Nkrumah and his efforts, and more importantly the extravagant use of Ghana's resources meant for the development of our nation in the creation of OAU and now AU. Why couldn't any Ghanaian of sound mind muse over the state of the OAU/AU after exactly 53 years today.
  
  Would the the architects of OAU/AU, Kwame Nkrumah, Haile Selassie, and Malcolm X take a bow in approbation, or bow in ignominy with the state of the OAU/AU today? Doesn't it say volumes about African personality? In fact, what are we celebrating? But the real question is: Was Dr. Nkrumah wise in his use of Ghana's resources meant for Ghana's development to create OAU, which is now AU? What would be the state of Ghana today had Nkrumah spent all his time, efforts, and resources available to build the country? Is this too much to ask by discerning minds? Why do some CPP apparatchiks take offence in discussing the performance of Nkrumah's government?
  We have a solid reason to ask that question, because we are sufficiently informed, and also know that when a leader spends his time and resources pursuing the interest and well-being of his people, good things happen to the people. Singapore's PM Lee Kwan Yew was Nkrumah's contemporary, but because he was dedicated to his country and people, he was able to transform his country's marshy land to a first world nation just in a quarter of century - that's all it took, just 25 years. Today Singapore is one of the Asian Tigers, well known for their sound historic upliftment of their peoples. Comparing Singapore's income per capita with Ghana's is like day and night. While Singapore has the third highest income per capita in the world at $38,000 (the last time I checked), Ghana's income per capita sits at $1,500. Is this too much of a question to ask by discerning minds?
