American cars are the best in the world,cars manufactured in America be it Toyota,Mitsubishi,Honda,Nissan are far,far better than those manufactured in Japan and shipped to Africa direct,they are low standard cars,if you see a Landcruiser manufactured in Japan or somewhere else and compare to the American version you will see a big difference,even laymen know that and based on that most Ghanaians now prefer to buy American version of these brand cars.
The president was wrong on what he said,he said that out of ignorance,he should have said he doesn't like Ford instead of saying he doesn't like American cars. If we have Ghanaian cars and the president says he likes Ghanaian cars,he does not like American cars that is okay because it shows patriotism patriotism but since we don't even assemble cars nowadays let alone manufacturing even a tire it is wrong to say that.
If you go to Tema Harbor today most of the cars you will count are from America,you can see only few cars coming from other parts of the world,anybody saying today that he does not like American car is an old school,the modern Ghanaian prefer American cars to any other cars as you can now see in town, the automatic cars are improvement on the transmission the manual transmission, that is why most people prefer it to the STICK SHIFT, something we didn't know in the past, ignorantly calling automatic cars women cars, today that is not the case,Ghanaians have realized the difference,those who can afford the automatic will go for it but those who cannot will go for the stick and be struggling with it.

How much you pay on duty on cars depend on the engine capacity, year of the car and the make of the car. Let's say you shipped a Kia Sportage with an engine capacity of 2.0 and the car is older than five years but not more than ten years, you will definitely pay about that 20% duty of the book value o the car. If you shipped a 2016 Ford Expedition with an Engine capacity of 4.0 OR 3.5, YOU WILL DEFINITELY PAY about 40% of the car value as duty and that is why your argument that Ford Expedition cannot cost $100,000 in Ghana shows that you don't know what you are talking about.
Yes, you might not like it when I say you don't know what you are talking about when you argue that Ford Expedition that can sell as much as $70,000 including taxes in USA cannot cost $100,000 in Ghana, then definitely you don't know what you are talking about. If you think you can buy a Ford Expedition that cost $70,000 in USA at the same price in Ghana, then you definitely don't know anything about cars.
Let's say your SUV you sent to Ghana cost $20,000 in USA, after paying shipping cost, duty of 20% and VAT of 17.5%, will you still sell this car at $20,000 if you decide to sell it?
Ask somebody you know in Ghana to go and ask for the price of the top of the line version(I like version more than model)Ford Expedition and you might get $100,000 price.

Your argument here is sorry to say, shallow. Yes, when we talk about American cars, we meant cars manufactured by Ford, General Motors, Chrysler and not Toyota, Nissan, Honda Mitshibushi or Mercedez benzes manufactured in America.
If a Toyota is assembled in America, and most of these foreign car manufacturing plants in America assemble these cars. About 85% of the parts of Toyotas assembled in USA comes from Japan or their plants somewhere. The bumbers, side mirrors, seats and few others are manufactured in America due to the standards requirement from Federal government.
Even before these car companies started assembling their cars in USA, THE CARS THEY MANUFACTURED IN jAPAN and shipped to America were different.
In 1996 when you were not even in USA, I shipped a 1991 Mitsubishi Galant to Ghana which was different from othe rMitsubishi, Galants shipped from Japan and Europe.
The point I am trying to make here is that, cars like Mercedes, Toyota, BMW and other cars assembled in USA does not make them America cars so when we talk about American cars, we meant only Ford, GM and Chrysler cars and not European or Japanese cars assembled in USA.
