.....A group of health professionals who recently completed the College of Health in Kintampo, have expressed anger over the arrest of some of their members for picketing at the Flagstaff House to demand jobs.
The health workers, who came from various parts of the country to petition the president to fast track their employment into the health sector, claim two of them were arrested for unlawful gathering.
Speaking to Citi News, a member of the group, Philip Davor, said they did not notify the police of their intended actions because they were simply in Accra to deliver a letter to the government and not to demonstrate.
“We did not even get to the Flagstaff House and they were picked by the Police. Either they release those guys or they come back and pick all of us. They said unlawful assembly, what is the use of unlawful assembly when we are in the house suffering? What has the government done about us? They should come back and take all of us, that will rather help because if they take some we will go back again.”
“…So we are sending a message to the Police commander that he should tell his boys to come back and pick all of us. If he, the IGP has paid school fees for his children and after four years, they come back home and become a burden on him and he feels it is good so he will pick us, he should come back and pick all of us,” he stated.
Other health professionals in recent times have threatened to occupy the Flagstaff House if they are not posted.
The Coalition of Unemployed Nurses who are part of the health professionals to have made such threats say they are yet to be posted to health institutions years after completing school

WHAT COULD THE MOTIVE BEHIND THE CAR GIFT BE?
This country is under very serious threat. Politics is putting the country into the threat being observed. Until fair minded citizens wake up and take their destinies into their hands but not wait to look up to the politician, we are doomed. I want to advise the formation of several movements which will fight for the truth for this country. If we fail to do this we have failed this country. Some of us are ready to be in the thick of affairs if we agree on this humble proposal.
When issues come up which should be looked at dispassionately and at least by common sense, politics distort the matter and the right solution is lost. How many people are those we are calling politicians at all that they should be deciding for over 80% of the population? I recall Prof Dowuona who used to be the General Secretary of the CPP said that in Latin America the intellectuals usually join the populace to fight politicians for engaging in the wrong things. He then says that is not what happens in Africa.
The NDC as a party do not generally like to deal with the intellectual community. The main reason behind this position of the NDC is simple. The intellectuals are very inquisitive and will not easily accept the wrong things. The NPP on the other hand are considered as a party of intellectuals. If this is true, it is these intellectuals who have proved capable to come up with pro poor policies which brought relieve to the average Ghanaian between 2001 and 2008. If intellectualism is a bad thing, why some of our illiterate parents eager to sent their children to school? All we have succeeded to do in Ghana is to take advantage of the illiteracy and ignorance of our people using propaganda and lies to brain wash them.
In the car gift matter, I think those who have the opportunity to discuss the matter in public are not helping much. The right questions are not being asked. Many of these people are legal persons and it surprises me.
I recall a similar incident involving the Finance Minister and an investment of USD250 million at UBA. This issue was a very clear matter but those who had the opportunity to engage in public discussion failed at the same sitting to separate the matter into law and finance. People were saying there was no breach of the Bank of Ghana Act but were not able to identify the financial reasoning in that act. There is a phrase in Banking Law which I am so much endeared to – The action of a reasonable person. This has form the basis of judgments in some case laws under English Jurisprudence.
Now in the matter of the car gift involving the President, one notes the ensuing debates are following on the same trajectory as the above mentioned. I will want those who have elected themselves to speak on the matter to ask themselves the following questions:
• What is the standard practice when the state acquires vehicles for its use and has this instance followed that practice?
• Why was duty paid for this vehicle if it was meant for the state?
• We were told the contractor had put up bid for several contracts before which were not successful until he was introduced to the Vice President. The contract to construct wall around the Ghana Embassy need to be investigated. Was due process followed? Was the sum paid deserving? The car gift can be a ‘’thank you ‘’ to President Mahama for facilitating this particular contract.
• Did this gift influence any subsequent contract awarded to this contractor and if there is any, was the contract sum deserving?
• The cost of the vehicle is material in spite of the fact that it can be bought by the President if he wants. He can also decide to give it out as gift to someone he so wishes. Can he give out a state vehicle if he so wishes?
• The matter must be considered in the light of the prevailing laws. Apart from the Constitution I will encourage that other relative laws and code of conducts are looked at.
• It is of no relevance where the vehicle has been parked or placed. There are company or public vehicles in private homes. This does not make the cars private ownership. The decision could be an after thought. Or it has been done for convenience for now.
• We should listen very carefully to the interview granted by the Contractor and follow up with the relevant questions.
• Follow the chain of events from the delivery of this vehicle by the Contractor or his agent to the President or his agent.
The above questions are not in chronological order and not exhaustive however a genuine attempt to find answers to them will assist to unravel the motive for the gift. Nobody will give out something of a material value like the Ford Expedition and tell the recipient ‘’I am giving you a bribe.’’ We have been told by the framers of the 1992 Constitution that aside the Letter which are visible to anyone who wants to learn there is also the Spirit which are not visible. Many times in our lives, we are too concerned with the physical. We should always ask God for wisdom and certain things will be laid bare to our understanding without toil.
In conclusion, I am of the strongest belief that this gift was meant to influence the President in his judgments relating to his relationship with this contractor. The contractor could also be rewarding the President for his earlier assistance to win the fence wall contract which he may not by practice and law deserve. So there is the need to review the way and manner this contract was awarded to the Burkinabe and all other contracts.

Before I make my substantive submission, let me advise the campaign team and the NPP communicators not to be pushed by spokespersons of Government and the NDC to discuss the major policy proposals the party will implement in government. The NDC and the spokespersons of their candidate want to know what the NPP has by trying to tease them to disclose. The NPP should leave it at that and never get worried about the teasing
The campaign team needs to remember the things that happened in the 2012 campaign when the NDC bought into the policy proposals of the NPP on Northern Development Fund and the Free Education. These were copied and hijacked by the NDC. They want to do the same thing this time again. Let the NPP hold tight to it and make it available at the time we find right.
What does it take to provide infrastructure for a country? We all know that this could be done from the country’s own resources or from loans contracted from outside or Grants. The resources of the country can come from taxes, levies, fees, dividends from state organizations and others. These sources of income have seen dramatic increases since the inception of the Mahama led administration in 2013. Additionally there have been increases in the rates applicable to these sources predating this Government. What is more pronounced has been the amount of loans contracted by the Government. The Government has been awarded as going on a borrowing spree never witnessed in the history of the country.
The desire to go on this path has been deliberate for only one selfish reason: CORRUPTION. With more money at its disposal, the instance of corruption is very rife. Government and NDC officials are quick to enumerate the infrastructure they have executed but they are short of accounting for the cost. ‘’The Accounting to the People’’ tour by the President was a campaign tour in spirit, disguised at just the title. Which of our laws imposes this responsibility on the President? The people want to know from proper accounting whether the Government and the President were EFFICIENT and EFFECTIVE in delivering the infrastructure. Until we know how much these infrastructures cost the taxpayer there is no Efficiency and Effectiveness and this is very much important.
‘’Accounting to the People’’ has been done in the same way the ‘’State of the Nation Address’’ was conducted; a lopsided account to the taxpayer, using their so called Green Book as the main focus and deliberately ignoring the sordid indicators like Interest rates, inflation, exchange rates, general conditions of living located in the prices of utilities, food, transportation etc.
Let me use this opportunity to advise NPP communicators and those who debate on the side of the party to respond to issues of infrastructure which has been the strongest debating point of the NDC with CORRUPTION. They should not say anything at all except ‘’CORRUPTION’’ when they refer to the provision of infrastructure as their main achievement. They should title the Green Book as ‘’CORRUPTION’’ and any time they refer to it, they should say CORRUPTION.
The saying ‘’to whom much is given, much is expected’’ is very relevant in the provision of infrastructure because the amount of debt the country is exposed to is unprecedented.
