Reports that stones were hurled at President John Dramani Mahama’s convoy are untrue, the secretary of the Ejisu branch of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Michael Brobbey, has said.
It emerged on Wednesday June 29, 2016 that the presidential convoy, making its way to the Ejisu municipality, where Mr Mahama was in the Ashanti Region, was attacked by stone-throwing residents of some communities including Esienimpong, Kwaaso, Asotwe, and Onwie.
But rejecting the report, Mr Brobbey said: “From where I stood at Onwe, I did not see a single stone [being thrown]. But can anyone hurl a stone at the convoy of the president of Ghana? That would be unwise,” he said.
According to Mr Brobbey who spoke on Accra100.5FM’s Ghana Yensom on Thursday June 30, residents had lined up along the road to reach out to the president that they were living in hardship and could not pay their utility bills.
To him, the allegation of attacks on the president’s convoy was a “lie”. He said the NDC government should rather be focused on improving the lot of citizens than peddling falsehood.
“Ghanaians are crying, Ghanaians are suffering, Ghanaians are frustrated, and some cannot pay their school fees… Ghanaians are suffering, this hardship is too much. Tell the NDC…they should think about solving the problems of Ghana, not this propaganda, lies…” he advised.
But NDC parliamentary aspirant for Ejisu constituency, Gloria Huze, speaking on the same programme, insisted the attacks occurred, saying some individuals from the areas mentioned had been mobilised to hoot at the president at the time he was scheduled to pass by, to create disaffection for his government and create the impression that he was not received warmly in the region.
But she said as President Mahama’s procession approached the area, many inhabitants from nearby communities rather trooped to welcome him and when the crowd hired to hoot at the president sensed their intended shouts of disapproval would be drowned by the cheers for Mr Mahama, they immediately switched to stone throwing.

The Ashanti regional Minister John Alexander Ackon has denied reports that the convoy of President John Mahama was attacked and pelted with stones in the region on Wednesday.
Media reports on Wednesday indicated that Mahama’s convoy was hooted at and pelted with stones during his ‘Accounting to the People tour’ of the region.
Two residents of Kumasi in the region were reportedly arrested for pelting the president’s convoy with stones.
The suspects arrested were allegedly among a group of residents who were hooting at the president.
According to Ultimate FM’s Isaac Bediako Justice, one of the vehicles in the convoy was mildly dented and one person injured as a result of the attack.
The incident reportedly took place at Ejisu, where the president visited Wednesday afternoon.
But in an interview with host of Morning Starr Thursday, Mr. Ackon told Nii Arday Clegg that the reports are untrue and inaccurate.
According to him, the President’s convoy is safe adding that no one pelted stones at any of the cars among the fleet of cars.
“No one stoned the president’s convoy...I was in the convoy and the president’s convoy is safe,” Mr. Ackon said.
Meanwhile, the President is expected to continue with his tour of the region today.

Ghana will always remember President Obama of the US for one specific statement when he visited this country. The statement is that Ghana needs strong institutions and not strong men. This is very significant. Unfortunately we are not taking our time to perfect the democratic dispensation as quickly as possible, we give little attention to this statement. We don’t have to go the full hawk of the practice of democracy since others ahead of us are there to learn from. We have turned this process into an avenue for corruption to make money for ourselves.
We have said Parliamentarians have been elected to make laws. What is the President elected for? When a president is elected all the resources of the state have been given to him by principle. These resources include the human and the institutions. He is supposed to manage the resources to the benefit of the country. This has been amplified under The Directive Principle of State Policy. But what is more important to me is the efficiency and effectiveness of the public institutions which are to provide services to the people. Our concentration has always been on the provision of infrastructure since that is where the corruption is perpetuated.
There is nothing to write home about talking about the services rendered by most of the state institutions like the provision of passport, driving license, registration of businesses, provision of utilities, registration of lands and many others. The list can go on without end. There are ministries which supervise all these public institutions and there are ministers who are appointed by the President to be responsible and are paid with the taxpayers’ money. Can we say the services provided by these institutions are above board? They are saddled with corruption and inefficiencies. The citizens do not have value for money. There are so much bureaucracies and red tapeism. Reforms which should make these institutions responsive are lacking but the taxpayers are burdened with wage bills and other expenses every day.
The strong institutions which the US President alluded to are missing. The President and his ministers have failed us woefully by not ensuring that these public institutions deliver good and less expensive services to the people. The President has over riding authority on these institutions but this is not brought to bear. Rather the people are marginalized without anybody to their assistance.
The NPP under the presidency of Kufuor undertook some reforms in the public sector with Dr Ndoum in charge. This was not far reaching even though some achievements were made with regards to emoluments especially. I was expecting the Mahama led administration will continue from where the last administration left off. The gains made have been reversed and it will take another fresh energy to start a similar thing in the future.
This has been one of the reasons we are not making fast progress as a nation. We are always starting anew almost everything with the change in government. I am expecting a future president to pursue an all inclusive National Development agenda seriously. It is something I want to see Nana Addo do during his presidency.
