The belief underpinning the use of the lie detector is that deceptive answers will produce physiological responses that can be differentiated from those associated with non-deceptive answers. You have mentioned it for many years now and I can honestly tell you, it is not one of the top notch technological inventions . With a simple yes and no answer with normal breathing will outwit a lie detector machine. Any mafia and born thief can easily outwit that machine. Good moral upbringing and honesty is what we need teachers to be teaching kids at school and that will solve the problem. The so-called lie-detector is not reliable at all. If it were not such unreliable there would be no need for investigations at least in the advanced countries. It is based on the flawed assumption that if a person is telling a lie, he/she will be nervous or jittery and if he/she is telling the truth, he/she will be calm. We all know that several people can remain calm while telling a lie and several others too can be nervous or jittery while telling the truth.
Using the lie-detector to determine a lie, is like a trial by ordeal. For instance in days of old, when a woman was accused of being a witch, she would be cast into fire and depending on whether the fire burns her or not, her innocence or guilt was determined. The assumption was that only a witch can avoid being burnt by fire. Nothing can be more unscientific.
