I advised them to go on local Canadian media, but was ignored. I hope the reason they appear unwilling to go that way is not bcos she failed to buy adequate insurance - even people who go on holidays to chill and ignore insurance are assisted by the community (I don't mean govt) when they go on the local media. I think people will respond positively to the fact that she is paying high international student fees and didn't have extra money for high insurance.

If you are gonna ask people for money, you have to show respect to them - I don't mean you shd do what they advise - just show respect and respond.

Also why is the handling of the funds not handed over to an independent trustee/charity/NGO instead of family? Accountable to whom? Those are questions that the local media will legitimately ask - they would like to see the hospital's invoice/estimates etc. Why is all that info not on the website? You need money really fast, so please do things that will encourage people to contribute fast. This money could be raised over a single weekend if you do it properly!!

I'm quite surprised that a hospital in a civilized country such as Canada will deny treatment due to lack of funds - this is not some "rich" backward country.

Of course, I don't know the facts - just thinking aloud.

Why can't they go to the Canadian media? Canadians will respond readily even if she failed to get adequate insurance because her life is at stake! But the Canadian media will ask important questions before giving access. Questions such as "show us the hospital invoice", "who has control of and accountability for the funds?". These are very legitimate questions. I feel like the people behind the fund-raising are not prepared to answer such questions.

Also, this is Canada: control and accountability of the funds should be handed over to one of the many decent NGOs who would be happy to manage it at no charge.

For example, the Ghanaian News has published Abigail's story; the Sankofa Radio on Canadian Multicultural Radio (CRM 101.3 FM) has been promoting it every Sunday morning; sent story to Toronto Star for consideration; working with CBC (can't use its competitors to do the same) to put it out there all over Canada and the world!!! And Gofundme is managing donations in the open online (no secrecy).
With God all things are possible.

I don't Know Abigail or any family but I am touched to help.Allow the spirit of God lead you as you give. If you are a giver , then it's your call to give. I want to admonish my fellow Ghanaians to act as our faith demands in times like this and let God take care of the rest. Former President Kuffour has given 7 strong reasons why Ghanaians must sack Mahama and his team on 7 November 2016.
President Mahama indicated not too long ago that only the former presidents (Kuffour and Rawlings) can give a more accurate assessment of his performance as they know what the job entails. On the back of this, It’s not clear how the Presidency will respond to these 7 reasons given by Kuffour:
1. Scandals and corruption
2. Unstable currency
3. Unstable power supplies – undermining both industrial and domestic ventures
4. Many industrial action and demonstrations due to economic hardships
5. Sudden and high tariff increases for utilities
6. Ever-bloating national debt
7. Executive bureaucratic delays in the public sector, especially at the ports
Based on the foregoing, he wants Ghanaians to “decide for GOOD, EFFICIENT AND ACCOUNTABLE governance at all levels of government.” This would show that they “understand the uses of their vote”.

1. Fellow Ghanaians, It gives me great pleasure to greet you on this New Year’s eve.
2. My wish for our nation and all of us into the coming year, is a reprieve from the many and seemingly endless challenges that have beset us through the just ending year, 2015
3. Scandals and perceived corruption in governance and the society generally, socio-economic hardships such as unstable currency, unstable power supplies – undermining both industrial and domestic ventures – executive bureaucratic delays in the public sector, especially at the ports, many industrial actions, protest demonstrations throughout the economy, sudden and high tariff increases for utilities, and ever-bloating national debt stock, have hall-marked the out-going year.
4. The incoming year, 2016, must be a year of decision for the nation to arrest this dangerous slump of the society and economy.
5. The people must decide for good, efficient and accountable governance at all levels of government.
6. Civil Society Organizations, Traditional leaders Religious Groups must assume responsible guidance within their remits to ensure that the entire citizenry of the nation live up to the spirit and letter of the national constitution which enshrines inclusive democracy as the way of life for all of us.
7. 2016 is significant because it is the year of Election for both the Presidency and the Legislature.
8. The people must show through their conduct and choices that they understand the uses of the vote.
9. Sustained Transformation of society will not come through short-sighted and short-term inducements.
10. We must examine critically the track records and manifestoes of the contending parties before we make our choices in the election.
11. The Electoral Commission must be resolute in its independence and impartiality as enjoined by the national constitution, in its officiating of the Elections.
12. The security agencies of the nation must uphold the integrity and security of the national constitution and the state which are above all institutions, parties and individuals of the land.
13. We must all resolve to enter and live through this New Year with this determination so that the outcome of the Elections will ensure us with the government we can all accept and work with in good faith and in peace.
14. This is how to give our nation and its citizenry the sustained peace and direction to real development and dignity that we must have.

You can call each other names and laugh about it now but when you end up inciting hate here as I read through your posts here and a real civil war starts in your country you will regret what you are doing now. Your religious and political leaders are trying to divide you between religious lines and you are helping them do that rather than standing up and say we are all Ghanaians never mind our tribe, region or religion. That's the only stand that will save your blessed nation. The foreign powers pushing the government to take certain decisions will abandon you when you start killing one another and reject you from running to their countries so be careful. Our 11 year war in Sierra Leone was not even based on religious or tribal difference and see what we did to our country. The worst conflicts are those based on tribal and religious differences. See Central Africa, Bosnia, South Sudan and Rwanda. To have a better knowledge of this, please watch the documentary/movie called _"Hotel Rwanda"_ or _"Sometime in April"._ My heart bleeds when I read what you guys are saying because I know what this will lead to. _*You will be the losers all of you whether Christian, Muslim, ewe, akan or ga etc.*_ Stand as one and save your nation together bcos you have only one Ghana that has the potential to lead Africa."
