The United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, will be in Africa next week with terrorism high on the agenda. Kerry’s two-nation visit will commence in Kenya on Monday August 22 and end three days later in Nigeria.
A statement from the US department of state disclosed that he would be meeting president Kenyatta of Kenya and Muhammadu Bhuari of Nigeria during his visits where counter terrorism issues are expected to be discussed.
Nigeria continues to fight Boko Haram insurgents in the north of the country whiles Kenya is engaged in East Africa’s concerted fight against Somali based al-Shabab militants.
Kerry’s Nigeria itinerary (August 23 – 24)
Kerry would travel to two states in Nigeria, the administrative capital of Abuja where he will meet with President Buhari to discuss counter terrorism efforts, the Nigerian economy, the fight against corruption, and human rights issues.
‘‘In Abuja, the Secretary will meet with a group of adolescent girls working to change community perceptions that devalue the role of girls in society,’‘ the statement added.
He will later travel to Sokoto in the north where he will deliver a speech on how resilient communities and religious tolerance can help in the fight against violent extremism. He will also meet with northern governors and religious leaders.
Kerry in Kenya (August 22)
Kerry is expected in Nairobi, Kenya, on August 22 to meet with President Kenyatta to discuss regional security issues and counter terrorism cooperation, as well as bilateral issues.
He will also meet with Kenyan foreign minister Amina Mohamed and other regional foreign ministers to discuss key challenges in East Africa. Among others, prospects for resumption of a political process in South Sudan and support to Somalia’s political transition and ongoing fight against al-Shabaab.
As part of his visit, Kerry is billed to to meet with participants of the Young African Leaders Initiative and the Mandela Washington Fellows programs.

I have to say that the Ambassador Victor Smith is an excellent Ambassador. He is thorough and helpful and really caring. Over the last couple of years that we have had to deal with the embassy here in the UK he has been a most fantastic leader and Ambassador, ensuring the welfare of our situation and helping in every way possible. And he is kind and thoughtful. If he is going to run for office in Ghana frankly the constituency are lucky to have him. With his help and connections there will be better opportunities for the Ghanaian residents. WHoever is complaining in this article is obviously politically motivated. July and August are dead months in the UK. British Parliament is in recess and whatever needs to get done can get done with email, phones, faxes and the diplomatic bag. So don't take this at face value.

They commit offences with such disdain and impunity, as though there are no laws in the country. A clear case in point is Obinim, who has attacked and vandalized a Radio Station, stepped on the belly of a pregnant woman, slept with his own junior pastor's wife, then cursed their child with paralysis, flogged 2 adolescents in public. In all this, he hasn't ever been prosecuted, and he walks about arrogantly beating his chest, taking all Ghanaians for fools. He says he knows the law and now seems to have silenced everyone. Ghanaians only talk, and leave matters to die after a few days. Then here comes an ambassador, arrogant, scornful as he is, vacates his post to pursue his own selfish personal interest, and no action is taken by an equally arrogant, apathetic president. See how he's treating this ambassadorial mission as though he's operating his own private bisiness? Why would Mahama care to act? Hasn't he said somewhere before that, 'Yentie obiara'? Yeah, that's what they're doing, both internal and international. It's a pity, Ghanaians must wise up. You have nation wreckers languishing in jail for threatening to rape and kill judges, and then within 24 hours of their sentenced to serve their prison term, you have NDC ministers of state queuing up to sign a petition for Mahama to pardon them? Then they use the word 'solidarity' to prove they're doing the right thing. How do we describe all of these sicknesses?
