The flash points identified by the police have their underlying problems and not necessarily related to elections. While the elections could trigger such violence. The fact that they have not exploded now or before the elections means, the people in the supposed contesting places, can live with one another. The problems could be a matter involving, harmless tribal rivalries, chieftaincy and land, mostly. But some of these misunderstandings date back in some instances, to more than five decades, and in some, pre colonial times. But, Ghanaians have learnt to live with these problems. Inter marriages still go on in these communities, so what is the big deal. It is a bad government, when it sees itself going down in the polls, that resort to ignite these latent problems, in order to take electoral advantage. In order to take advantage during elections at these supposed problem areas, a bad government will do all it can to mess with the electoral processes even, way before the date of the elections. This is exactly what is happening with the Electoral Commission now. There is a clear attempt and most times, they look too ugly and amateurish, that a State Institution will shamelessly behave in such predicted manner. It becomes obvious to people with some fairness, that the EC is on a one-way track. Interests that feel threatened by the EC behavior, may not take it lying low, they will talk, their message will inflame passions. The Police and all who seek " peace " must count the EC office and it's systems, as one of the flash points in the country. If we correct the ills of the EC, Ghana will not have any reason to fear in the coming elections. The recent Brexit elections is a case in point. No party agents were even required. Each side of the contest believed in the EC.No stone was hurled. Not a limb was broken. We can and must aspire to do same because we also have been endowed with brain matter.
