AS A STUDENT IN GHANA, MY TEACHERS WERE NEVER HAPPY WHEN I USED MY OWN WORDS TO CORRECTLY ASSIGNMENTS OR EXAM QUESTIONS. MY TEACHERS IN GHANA, JUST WANTED TO SEE THEIR NOTES IN THE WORDS IN WHICH THEY WERE DICTATED WITH NO VARIATION, NOT EVEN WITH SYNONYMS. THEY DISHED OUT NOTES TO STUDENTS OVER A LONG PERIOD OF THEIR CAREERS AS TEACHERS AND WOULD FAIL THOSE WHO DO NOT ANSWER TEST QUESTIONS OR ASSIGNMENTS, REPEATING VERBATIM, THE NOTES OF THE TEACHER. MANY STUDENT MEMORISE TEACHERS NOTES AND PASS EXAMS AND ACQUIRE QUALIFICATIONS, WITH NO ELEMENT OF CRITICAL THINKING IN THE EDUCATIONS THEY GOT, HENCE APPOINT SUCH STUDENTS TO A POSITION, WHICH REQUIRES THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX TO SOLVE PROBLEMS AND THEY ARE FOUND SERIOUSLY WANTING; NEVER ABLE TO SOLVE ANY PROBLEMS, THOUGH HE IS A DOCTORATE HOLDER. DR PATRICK AWUAH HAS HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD, EXPOSING THE CANKER WHICH IS KILLING THE DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICA.

You are right. What I did those days was just memorise subjects i didn't like just to satisfy the teachers and after the exams I wouldn't remember what I " chewed"

Not only is it affecting how we are educating our future leaders, it has affected and will continue to affect how we lead. We have so many Ghanaians with doctorate degrees yet we cannot manage a small country with a population of less than 30 million. We have collapsed all the factories that were set up by Kwame Nkrumah. Doctor Wreko Brobbey mis-managed VRA for about two years and did not have the vision or foresight to increase our electricity capabilities. We are struggling with managing our public educational system, with Npp and NDC shuffling the system between 3 and 4 years. And out of 30 million Ghanaians nobody is realizing that the problem is not the number of years the kids are spending in school but is the lack of effective teaching that is hampering the standard of education. Why are the children in private schools like Tema Parents and Achimota doing well in spite of the 3 year 4 year calender nonsense. Even a learned minister under the useless Rawlings administration thought the problem was with the school uniforms the kids were wearing, and forced all our children to wear the same "SYTO" uniforms. That shows how stupid we are. Can we change? Hell no. We cannot change; because it is the same short sited, vision-less, chew pour pass students produced by our school system who are supposed to effect that change and because of their lack of vision they are not even realizing the problem. I feel your pain Dr Awuah. You are just like the proverbial one-eyed jack trying to tell 30 million deaf, bling and arrogant educated illiterates that they are walking straight into a huge pit of fire; I am sorry, they cannot see nor hear you. Save your breathe for Ashesi

How did this chap learn his stuff at Achimota? The system lacks something and that something is known as "Incubators", not baby ovens. Incubators are setups where what ideas are put into practical use. We lacks such things and even when we have them, they are under-resourced and starved of funds. Think about the CSIR, Food Research Institute, etc. All these are the brainchild of the visionary Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah who had the foresight to put these things in place.

Now let come back to Awuah's pontification. How is knowledge acquired? I want to believe is by learning and practicing. There is no educational system anywhere in this world, not even at Swathmore or Berkley, where you don't have to put your nose to the grind and imbibe what is thought in the classroom or your are supposed to read about. You have to invest precious time and dedication to this phase of book knowledge acquisition. Then the next phase comes in, Assessment. You are assessed to determined if you have knowledge of what you are supposed to know. I want to believe that Awuah has kids and do do spend time "chewing" and doing homework etc. I also want to believe that his kids are assessed at whichever school(s) they attend and if the pass, they are promoted to the next stage of the educational ladder.

Then there is the "Forget" aspect of the whole school experience. Everyone lambast the very educational systems that has produced giants like Awuah himself for being inadequate and lacking in everything. They say so and yet still the system has produced some very remarkable people who only excel when they leave our shores and go to the western world. Again, Awuah is an example of what am talking about.

What is it that these western countries have that we don't? This is where we need to pause and ask ourselves the pertinent questions.

Recently, Awauh confessed that it is very frustrating running his Ashesi university. In fact, he said he almost nearly gave up. Sir, did your frustration stem from the same Chew-poor-forget stuff or it was because of how our system operates.

Somewhere last week, a professor at the University of Ghana mounted his high horse and was also pontificating that Africans fear to innovate so people were asking that man, where are your innovations?

Mr. Dr. Awauh, if you found it frustrating enough to nearly give up your Ashesi university, then I want to tell you that there are systemic problems that chokes everything up in our country and I blame politicians and policy makers for all our troubles.

These academicians really amaze me. The problem has been highlighted many many times. What they have failed to do is to proscribe a solution. As a founder of a university what plan have you developed to overcome this problem and when will it be implemented? Your university has been churning out thousand or at least hundreds like sausage factories. They present dissertations or thesis as part final years assessment. How many of these papers address a single problem - economic or social in Ghana. None.

And how many books or relevant articles have been published? You are lazy and only good talkers.
