The Ghana National Association of Teachers has described as unfortunate, President John Dramani Mahama’s unilateral decision not to restore the scrapped allowances for trainee teachers.

The scrap of the allowances in 2014 triggered protests by many people, especially the teacher trainees but President Mahama has maintained he will not succumb to pressure, noting he prefers to lose the elections than to restore the allowance.

Government claimed the payment of the allowance was having “huge cost implication for the national budget” and also caused it to scale down the number of students intake through the imposition of what we call the quota system.

Addressing students of the Cape Coast University last week, President Mahama claimed the withdrawal of the allowance has increased enrollment at the various colleges of education nationwide.

But the General Secretary of GNA, David Ofori Acheampong, says the president could have allowed for broader consultations before making the statement.

He said one of the reasons given for the withdrawal of the allowance was that facilities were going to be expanded to take more trainee teachers but noted that has not been done.

“The reason they gave was that they wanted to expand the facilities and as I speak to you now no facility has been expanded in any College of Education. Even as I speak to you today, there is a problem with the final years who are supposed to come out next year,” Mr Acheampong said.

Speaking to TV3’s Daniel Opoku, he denied claims by President Mahama that enrollment has increased since the cancellation of the training allowances.

Dear teachers, until you have your employment letters, don't waste your time going to your posts.

I dont understand why some Ghanaians and for that matter teachers do support this man and his policies. So until when are teachrrs goinv to know that Mr President is not the right man for us. This same man scrapped off teacher training allowances claiming that the money could be used to embark on expansional projects in the teacher training colleges. And all his intentions and reasons for the cancellation of the allowances have been futile. Go to the your former college and see if for the past 3,4,5 or 10 years that you left the place there had been an improvement in the school's facility base to see if Mr President's reasons were established.
No allowance for three academic years and when out too you will be posted without appointment letters to provide evidence that you've been offered with a job and no assurance that you will even be paid. 2013,2014 and 2015 teachers who graduated from the various training colleges and universities got only three months payment and pay the remaining amount upon validating their documents for a proof that they duly deserve for payment. And for three years now majority of the teachers have not gotten their rest of their arrears. When government made this decision he told the general public that this decision is not a deliberate action on the part of government not to fulfill his financial obligations for those who duly deserve but instead to pave way for a payroll audit to eliminate all ghost employees from the payroll and after three months after their necessary documents have been audited the rest of their money will be paid. My question to Mr President is that for 3 good years you and your administration have not been able to curb the issue?
Government has forgotten that teachers gave him the visa to become president. Please teachers have to be vert rational and philosophical in thinking because l believe you arent going to allow your testicles to be stepped twice.
All best stategies which government propagandized that he has put them in place for the betterment of the classroom teacher are all tricks and lies.
Consider all these things before going to the December polls to vote.
