Why is there no Toll Booth on the 140 Km Alsphatic Fufulso-Sawla Road? Is it because the road leads to Prez Mahama's hometown? Is this not contrary to the national road policy? Why is Prez Mahama permitting this treachery? The Accra-Kumasi road is about 200 Km yet has 3 Toll Booths. The Accra-Aflao Road is less than 200Km and also has 3 Toll Booths. What about the Accra-Aburi Road? The road is less than 50Km and yet has a Toll Booth. By using the National Road Standard for siting toll booths the Fufulso-Sawla road should have had at least 2 Toll Booths but nay, there is no single toll booth on that stretch of road 3years after its construction and Mahama is happy with that. This same Mahama will later turn around to say that there is no money to employ teachers and nurses and later go and borrow money at high interest rate to construct roads. Is this prudent management of the Ghanaian economy or are Ghanaians now colonized by the Western Gonja Caliphate and so other Ghanaians should sweat for Mahama's Family and friends. Who knows, may be the money used for the construction of the Fufulso- Sawla Road is part of the money Kufuor secured for the construction of the Hydro-dam in the Upper East Region and which was later divert by the NDC government to construct roads in the Northern Region - the home region of President Mahama. May God save us from the evil hands of Mahama

The Electoral Commission (EC) has called on all persons who have picked nomination forms to contest in this year’s December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections to submit the forms by Friday, September 30, 2016 at 5:00pm.

The Commission, in a statement released yesterday, encouraged candidates or persons filing on their behalf to submit the nomination forms early in order to meet the deadline.

Eric Kofi Dzakpasu, Head of Communications, EC, who signed the statement, entreated the candidates to take the contents of the statutory declarations seriously and understand the full legal implications of admissions made under oath.

“Candidates are to take note of the requirement under law to ensure that their tax obligations are met in full or the need to make satisfactory arrangements in respect of tax obligations with the appropriate Authority,” he said.

Mr Dzakpasu asked the candidates to also take note of the requirement to declare their assets to the Auditor-General in order to meet the eligibility criteria.

He reminded them to submit their nomination forms with the requisite filing fees in bankers’ draft, stating that the Commission will not accept cheques or cash.

“Political parties can make bulk payments for their candidates at the head office of the Electoral Commission. Independent parliamentary candidates can only pay filing fees at the constituency level,” Mr Dzakpasu said.

PPP Sues EC

Meanwhile, Dr. Papa Kwesi Dr Nduom’s Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has however gone to court over what it called killer fees, asking the court to reduce them.

The party took the action weeks after the EC increased the filing fees for presidential candidates by 500 percent from GH¢10,000 to GH¢50,000.

The filing fees for parliamentary candidates have also been increased from GHC1,000 to GHC10,000.

PPP wants the High Court to declare that the filing fees are “discriminatory, arbitrary, capricious and unreasonable.”

About 23 presidential hopefuls picked nomination forms last week to contest in this year’s December 7 general elections.

Out of the 23 who have picked forms, 16 are political parties and seven are independent candidates.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has said it is considering whether or not to review the filing fees for presidential and parliamentary candidates after some political parties described the fees as exorbitant.

After an Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Thursday September 8, the EC announced that parliamentary candidates will have to file their nomination at a fee of GHC10,000 while presidential candidates are expected to pay GHC50,000.

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has accused the EC of using the price hikes as a means to stifle democracy, an assertion the EC has denied.

Speaking to Class News, Deputy Head of Communications for the EC, Alhassan Yusif Ayuba, said the review will determine whether or not the fees would be reduced.

“The commission will look into the concerns and if there is a need for it to be reviewed, the commission will do that but if we look at it and think that it should be maintained, it will be communicated to the political parties,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the All People’s Congress (APC) led by Hassan Ayariga has welcomed the amount quoted by the EC and has even suggested an upward adjustment of the GHS50,000 filing fee for presidential candidates to GHS120,000 arguing that desiring the highest office of the land must not be taken for granted.
