The gutter did not have to be in that state, uncovered. Open gutters are a thing of the past and are mostly maintained to mask huge misappropriation of budgetary allocation for drainage system construction.

The gutter did not have to be in that state, uncovered. Open gutters are a thing of the past and are mostly maintained to mask huge misappropriation of budgetary allocation for drainage system construction.

These gutters are deadly, unhealthy and worsens floods instead of helping to prevent them. They are often choked with trash that are either deliberately tossed into them by passers-by, or swept in by rainwater.

I have long advocated for subterranean culverts in all our towns and cities that would be interconnected to direct wastewater and rainwater into designated constructed ponds.

In fact, we are long overdue for modern Wastewater Treatment Plants all over Ghana, into which such subterranean culverts would drain their contents for proper treatment.

We have tolerated open gutters for far too long, living with their unhealthy contents, including fecal deposits and rotten carcasses. Choked open gutters that go uncleaned for years eventually exacerbate flooding, an incident for whose prevention the gutters were also constructed.

It seems our Officials do not care how these arteries of drainage are built until someone close to them become a direct victim of such dangerously shoddy infrastructure.

It is time we shifted gears into a true modern Nation. No developed Nation keeps constructing such gutters in their settlements, and go without Wastewater Treatment Plants. The lack of such an appropriate sanitary infrastructure in Ghana is one reason we cannot attract much tourism, and many foreign Businesses don't locate their operational centers beyond Accra.
