How practicable is this directive. If a teacher in, say, Tamale travels to Sawla to cast their vote how do you expect them to return to continue with their teaching. Nonsense.

GES has not well thought through for not making 7 Dec a holiday. Given that some schools are polling stations or near polling stations and the possibility of violence eruption that could put pupils to vulnerable situation.

There was near pandemonium and confusion at the Annual Global African Investment Forum held in Westminster, Central London after a heated exchange between Ghana’s President John Mahama and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo degenerated into open insults.This was due to General Obasanjo openly accusing the Ghanaian president and his government of blackmailing and collecting bribes from Nigerian businessmen in Ghana, buying numerous properties in Nigeria and South Africa and financially contributing 12 million dollars to Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign last year. This infuriated President Mahama who lost his temper and pointing his finger, called General Obasanjo an ” idiot” and a “silly buffoon”.It took other ministers present as well as Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to calm tempers and usher President Mahama to a nearby room. The forum, which takes place from 1st to 3rd December is attended by African Heads of States, Ministers, Private equity firms and investors to discuss opportunities for investment and development in African Economies.

Again, given that teachers and some students will most likely wait in long lines just to cast their votes, it is most likely the day will be wasted anyways. Security wise, given the tensions and security uncertainties on that day, it is only prudent that , the day should be declared a holiday for students.

The first one was Gabby Otchere-Darko apologizing on facebook about unsubstantiated statements he made about the Electoral commission. The second one is the decision by GES to keep schools open on election day. So does GES believe December 7 will be a productive school day? Or they just wanted to prove to Ghanaians how they take education seriously. This is insane.

School premises are most times used as polling stations and the risk of children being caught in skirmishes/riots, tear gas (if they are in school) will be high.

My other question is 'won't teachers be voting on that day?'Won't they also be spending hours in queues? Whoever is at the head of this institution should revisit this decision if indeed the pronouncement is true.

But the sad thing is, DECEMBER 7th is not a holiday. let's all know that 2/3 of the 29000 polling station in Ghana is located in schools. Now that the GES says it is not holiday, how can our school children concentrate on what is being taught when tension arises at the polling station?
What will be the protection if there's chaos in these polling station?
Can't the authorities at GES and ministry of Interior think about the future and well being of our younger children and siblings?

The decision demonstrates responsible leadership. God forbids, any incident take place on election day on the school premises what game plan does the GES have to ensure all the at-risk students and teachers are safe. My advice is for parents to keep their children at home on December 7 and not heed the directive of this clueless morons in GES
