That's far from the truth. In case you haven't realised, Mahama lost NDC's usual big margins in the Volta Region. That should tell you that the NPP was right that non-Ghanaians from Togo were being brought in to vote for the NDC. While the EC refused to address the matter, the NPP on its own took measures, including lobbying chiefs in Togo and patrolling the Ghana-Togo border, to limit the number of Togolese voting in our elections.

Moreover, due to Mahama's incompetence, many NDC sympathisers simply decided not to vote. They didn't want to vote for an incompetent government that has taken them for granted. But they also didn't want to vote for the NPP due to historical antagonisms. So they simply decided to register their protest by not voting. Thus in the Volta Region, NPP's vigilance and voter apathy have been the decisive factor in this election.

Elsewhere, especially in the swing voting regions of Central, Western and Brong Ahafo, people simply vote according to their circumstances. Note that in 2012 NDC won not only the parliamentary votes but also the presidential votes in these regions. NPP taking over in 2016 is the clearest indication of the rejection of the Mahama-led NDC's incompetence.

Unfortunately because the three regions above are Akan areas some might suspect ethnicity-based voting. But as I have explained above, this is far from the truth. You can say this of Ashanti and Eastern Regions. But not Central, Western and Brong Ahafo. But even if it's true that these also voted based on ethnic lines, then Mahama brought it upon himself. He going to the northern regions of Ghana to tell the electorate that they should vote for him because NPP is an Akan party that hates northerners was the stupidest comment he could ever make. Unfortunately for him, this was bound to anger even some Akans who typically vote for the NDC.

The lesson of this election is for political parties to eschew tribal bigotry during the campaign, vigilant during the voting process, and avoid take their strongholds (and any part of the country for that matter) for granted when in power.
