Achimota has always been biased against Akan students.The school is dominated by Ewe staff who go out of their way to give students with Akan names(particularly Ashanti names) very raw deal.Years back in the early 90s my oldest gained admission through a near perfect score at the common entrance.His junior twin brother with less powerful exam score was admitted to Prempeh Secondary in Kumasi.Now all my children were born and raised in Accra and speak Ga ten times better than Twi so it was a revelation when my oldest started complaining of harassment by the senior students and really hash treatment by the staff because of his very Ashanti name.On the other hand my younger twin fit in without incidents at Prempeh where there were as many Northerners,Ga,Akyems as were Ashanti students.I watched helplessly as the housemasters and other staff members at Achimota took it upon themselves to indirectly harass my son until he refused to go back for his third year.I forced him back preaching perseverance but his self esteem had been destroyed and he flunked at the O'level while his younger brother at Prempeh excelled.Luckily for us, their father managed to secure visas for us to join him here in America.Long story short,both of my sons are now well educated professionals(Oldest-Psychiatrist and youngest- Attorney with his own practice). Even though my youngest still speak glowingly about his time at Prempeh his older brother want nothing to do with the Achimota and it's old students Association.Achimota used to be one of the best if not "the" best school in Ghana until the Ewes took over.

My advice to all parents: trust your child more than the school authorities. So as soon as you receive that call from your ward or a sympathetic staff about your ward's welfare, drop whatever you are doing and dash to the school if even it's some ungodly hour!
Upon arrival assess the situation and if in your judgement or your instincts tell you to take your ward away, do so whether the authorities approve or not! School heads and staff are not like years gone by! Carelessness is very rife in the schools.
Why this advice? From personal experience that saved my ward's life!
My sympathies to the bereaved parents.

The school won't be closed down because of one incident, there are over 1200 students in the school. Be proactive and follow your instincts. In this case 37MH has got nothing to do with it...His housemaster watched for it to get to Malaria 3plus before he was sent to Achimota Hospital before he was even transferred to 37MH..so 37MH is not to be blamed

I was in Kwapong, your house and honestly you maltreated most of us. I recall one time you used a big PVC pipe to stroke me and some students like we were animals. I also recall when i was in form 1 you made me carry a mountain of rocks from one point of the boarding house to the far end of the boarding house. To be honest its not nice. I wish this case of the deceased will go far so the school will know the students aren't as happy as students from other schools are.

We as parents should not leave the health of our children in the hands of house master's and teachers. If my son tells me not to call the house master again, I will be there in a flash no matter what time of the day it is, that is alarm bells ringing.
I draw a line between illness and kids just not liking their house master or head. It is part of growing up, learning and discipline, you won't like your boss or every body you work with but you learn to manage the situation. But when it comes to the health and welfare of your children at school, TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!!!!

I'm an Akora of the school, when you're sick you must go to your house prefect, house nurse and house master to sign a On a piece of paper before you go to the school clinic, and even the clinic they barely do anything, before you'll be referred to the school hospital, which is worse. You can attend to the hospital with compliants about your stomach and they'll give you medication that don't even make sense.

The administration of the school just makes the teachers heartless because in some cases the house staff can do something about it but just because it's against the "rules" of the school they will rather chose to obey the rules just to get a good name in the sight of the heads to the detriment of the students which is very bad. I don't see why the hospital is on the schools premises but yet when a student is in a critical state he or she needs a medical chit to be signed before he/she is sent there. There are some instances where more than one person is to send the person to the hospital but teachers will sack other students who are helping the sick child to the hospital, the most annoying part is when the teacher driving the students away is driving but he won't even offer to send the helpless person in his car. This attitude of Ghanaians is very appalling it's not sending us anywhere and we ought to change.

I don't think the school authorities knew the child would die if he is denied the permission to go home. At times, the attitude of some students to leave the sight of school authorities without any tangible reason makes some school authorities deny exit excuses by students. It is for the good of our children that at times school authorities take some of these decisions. Please let's handle this issue with all the attention it needs.

I spoke to the housemaster to request that my son be granted an exeat on July 1st which was a Friday so he could take advantage of the long weekend and have a medical check-up. This request was refused and the housemaster asked me to write formally to the headmistress requesting for the exeat. How can school authorities be so insensitive and downright stupid in the name of discipline? This death is unnecessary and really hurts.

the same challenge but fortunately for him my parents stood firm to take care of him despite what his house master said and because of that my younger brother is stiil among the living.This is very sad and Achimota school should be held responsible.Negligence is unpardonable.
