The densely populated areas are the Akan regions and NDC is lucky that they don't vote en-bloc like the Volta region does, if they did the NDC would find it difficult to ever win.
I would say the enthusiasm was on the NPP's side because of the economic downturn. NPP was even competitive in the North, which could be attributed to both the economy and the Bawumia/Samira effect.
If NPP focuses on the economy, curbs corruption and listens to the needs of the people, they may be in power for a while.

That's exactly the reason why NDC lost the elections. They had pinned all their hopes on the bloated voters register, hoping to use it to double-vote, and also to pull in numerous foreigners from Togo and surrounding countries to vote for them. NDC was cocksure of victory this way that's they were unrufled by the sea of allegations of corruption and incompetence that went on within the government. Remember the intransigence of the EC about not cleaning up the voters register? Ghana's register with over 15million voters in a country of 25million population is the highest in the world in terms of voter to population ratio. We never had that many voters to begin with. Therefore the ultra vigilance of NPP at the voting centres made the strategy of double voting impossible for NDC. Also the election atmosphere was extremely risky and unsafe for the foreigners, expecially those from Togo, to put their lives on the line and cross the borders to vote for NDC. Volta Region's voting percentage dropped by a whopping 23%. That percentage is the no-shows that NDC expected to come in from Togo to vote for them.
Folks, this factor is solely responsible for the defeat of NDC. It will even get worse in subsequent elections because Akuffo Addo will transfer the current EC commissioner from that office, paving the way for a highly sanitized voters register to be compiled. I can see the beginning of the end for NDC as we know it. That's why Sammy Awuku said that Ghana may eventually turn into one party state.

This is what I've been saying all along. The court case in 2012 is what opened our eyes. Now a better analysis will show that the NDC lost an almost constant percentage in most areas. These were added during transmission of the 2012 votes hence the pink sheets hullabaloo. This time around that didn't happen. Remember the EC were complaining about figures changing in their system? Yeah! the NDC planned to do that again this time but the vigilance was too much.
The biggest lesson form the court case was that elections are won at the polling station. That is why the NPP declare the result earlier. That pre-empted any diabolic acts of the NDC and the EC. Yes, there are voters from Togo and so on but that is would be insignificant because Volta alone cannot win you election. The real deal is the tampering of results during transmission! The register has been intentionally over bloated to allow for massaging of results. The EC commissioner refused to release results because she was hoping the NDC could change it somehow.
I think going forward, the EC should consist of a chairperson who is neutral and deputies selected from the various political paties.

The 2012 vote was bloated due to ballot box stuffing, double, triple voting and other rigging factors. Why am I so sure of this?
A population of 27 million cannot have close to 16 million voters. Even if all eligible people register to vote, you still cannot have 16 million out of 27 million voters and we all know at least two out of ten qualified voters did not register. If you add the 20% qualified voters who did not register to those on the voters register, then you are talking of about 20 million voters out of a population of 27 million, that is impossible.
The 2016 voters register should not have more than 13.5 million voters and that is even me being more charitable and assuming we have all qualified voters on the voters register.
A population of 27 million should have people age 0-17 of at least 50% to follow the world trend.
Just look at Nigeria with a population of 180 million. In their last election, less than 40 million voted so it is not possible to have 16 million voters out of a population of 27 million.
The 2016 election voters turnout was over 80% if it is calculated with real voters and not the ghost names and the Togolese on the voters register.

Mahama's arrogance led to NDC defeat. He became too power-drunk thinking that no one can remove him from power. Which of our civilian presidents ever don a military uniform and buying a gun despite being the commander-in-chief of all the security forces? That is the posture of an insecure leader who is afraid of his own shadow.
Mahama will go down in history as the only incumbent ever to lose and election while in office. Also, he made some unpardonable mistakes which Ghanaians never forget and punished him at the polls.
1. The Guantanamo Bay detainees: I don't know who advice Mahama to bring those people into Ghana and despite all the hues and cries, Mahama never wavered. He dug in his heels and dare anyone to challenge him. Ghanaians are being abreast with their surroundings; meaning they are gradually wising up.
2. The Muntie trio; After these guys have were sent to prison, Mahama after being pressured by his party supporters, used "executive powers" to release them and one of them led that health walk to cause commotion at Nana's house. Disrespecting the Supreme court is an affront to our democracy and Mahama did exactly that.
3. The DKM saga; When the DKM Ponzi scheme came to the public forum, Mahama was so mute and when he opened his mouth, he childishly said that "Those who are easily caught in these schemes are uneducated people". Hello! A president making such unguarded and unpardonable statement after people have lost their life savings while others died?
4. A free loader; Mahama became a free loader and with that I mean he was buying cars, houses etc for his friends and cronies while some workers have not been paid for years. Mahama thought he can buy the election just by doling out money to some unsuspecting Ghanaians but all such effort became fruitless and he was punished at the polls.
Yes, some people stayed away from the polls but those numbers were insignificant . Ghanaians were angry and vent their anger at Mahama and his NDC by showing them the exit door.
Politicians should take a cue from the just ended election because they will face the same wrath if they fail to keep their promises or take Ghanaians for granted.

NPP found a way to rig the election and that has left the NDC dumbfounded.
NPP simply did double, triple and quadruple voting at their strongholds at the blind side of the NDC. The NPP polling station officers carried out this raid cleverly with the NDC officers not knowing what was going on. Already thumb-printed ballot papers were added to the counts at the polling stations. NDC open your eyes and investigate this corrupt practice.
If NDC does not investigate, they NPP will carry out the same tactics again come 2020 and easily walk away victorious by stealing the election.
The youth were angry but not to the extent that they will vote out the NDC. The election was stolen cleverly by the NPP. NPP will continue to hack the EC system and ensure their numbers are entered into the EC system every time during elections and win by such large margins that the opposition NDC cannot and will not question the margin of victory.

A fair number of Ghanaians have commented on the fact that our electoral register is bloated. This was supported by the NPP chairman in the Volta region going to Togo on 16 occasions to plead with non-Ghanaians not to cross the border to select a leader for Ghana and they stayed at home. It's surprising that you chose to do this exercise with figures without taking cognisance of the fact that out of fear non-Ghanaians did not cross the border this time to vote despite NDC openly stated that they took EC officials and machines to register in Togo and Ivory Coast.

Graphs and numbers don't lie but they don't tell the real feelings of voters. Bob Marley once said " A hungry man is an angry man". This is the bottom line and the real reasons why NDC lost the elections. NDC arrogantly ignored the economy, engaged in blatant corruption, stealing, and government appointees throwing themselves around and spending cash big time. Even as the people wanted the government to check these practices, it turned its back on Ghanaians. Don't tell me about how Volta and some other regions never turned out to vote. They are human beings too and everyone was preoccupied with thoughts about how to pay school fees while kids of government big shots had the children overseas in luxury schools. Well, bring them home now. It serves you right.

Your analysis isn't complete if you fail to raise the possibility of a bloated register. Ghana's population growth rate is 3% meaning the youthful population far outweighs the adult population. Total population is 27 million and so it cannot be correct the voter's register contains 15 million adults leaving behind 12 million younger cohorts. Given this scenario, it makes sense to assume the voting population is around 12 million instead of 15 million.

It is absurd for anybody to suggest that the npp rigged the 2016 elections. Ironically, with whose connivance are they going to rig the elections? Madam Charlotte Osei who was appointed by JM or Amadu Suleimaan who is known to have vyed for and ndc candidacy?
We should remember that the total population of Ghana which stands at 27 million includes over 2 million foreigners leaving our net population at 25 million. For the legible voters therefore, it is strange to have an exceptional case of Ghana registering over 50% of its total population as eligible voters than the rest of Africa's average of 46%. So if we go by the 46% of 25 million, we should be looking at a total over population of 11.5 million.
Whatever the ndc got in 2012 included a significant margin of rigged votes which this time was largely nibbed in the bud due to the extra vigilance of npp polling agents and the further enhanced transparency measures which reduced multiple voting.
Reported cases of over voting were mere rabble rousing by the ndc to console themselves of the humiliating defeat .
Once again, it is just impossible in the third world scenario for an opposition party to be able to rig an election in which the stakes were too high for the ruling government.

My question is do people from Ghana cross border to these nearby countries
Something has to be done that in Ghana.I am a Ghanaian staying abroad I have all the necessary papers in this country to vote ,but I don't engage in their political issues in this country, because foreigner and citizen are never equal it doesn't matter how long you have stay there.
How can Nigerians, Togoles, burkinabes go as far as standing in a campaign platforms telling Ghanaians whom to vote for as if they are fools who don't know what is going on in their own country. Do Ghanaians do the same in their country?
That is why foreigners (Chinese )are destroying our fertile lands and destroying cocoa farms to the detriment of the poor farmers who are helping our economy because of greedness of our authorities

What I find interesting with the data analysis presented is the denial of the obvious. Why is it that in elections after 4 years on incumbency voters enthusiasm spike ( '96, '04,'12 ) but after eight years of incumbency voters apathy sets in ( '20, '08, '16 ) ??.And why are NPP margins larger when it wins but NDC winning margins smaller when it wins? I don't buy the voter apathy argument. Ben Epson argued post 2012 that NPP lost that election due to voter apathy in its strongholds of Eastern and Ashanti regions.? Well , turn outs in both regions were down in 2016? Why were voter turnouts in the border regions of the Volta , Western and the upper norths significantly down from 2012? Could thre have been ghost voters ? Remember the NDC thought the 2004 election was rigged by the NPP?
There is no voter apathy. Our Voters Register, the denominator , is incorrect, bloated as some are saying.? A stronger analysis will look at demographics and sociological patterns and sets- such as gender, age, education, income , rural/urban, religion and linguistic/ tribal splits to explain this NDC massive electoral loss.
The conclusion of NDC rural voting strength and NPP urban strength is shallow. I agree with the urbanization trend but both parties have strengths in the urban voting pool. A look at polling center data do not support the rural/urban argument. What is obvious is tribal affiliation voting. Let's be honest and call a spade a spade. NDC overwhelmingly attract votes from the minority' tribes : Ewes, GA/Adangbe and the Northen tribes. In the southern regions poll data show that people in the Zongos and Ewe enclaves vote NDC. NPP draws massive votes from the Akan tribe. The idea that urbanization favors the NPP is short sighted. I believe urbanization will make NDC very competitive electorally in the future. Note the NDC numerically is stronger in the six southern regions it lost than the four it won. It must shed its tribal image, eapedially Ewe. They don't have the numbers.
The positive going forward is that the NPP has become a national party for making inroads in the four NDC strongholds.
I believe the NDC tribal hedgemony party model to counter perceived Akan dominance that informed its creation by Rawlings, Awoonor, Annan, Tsikata and others will die a natural death and in its place a rebirth of a party based on values many Ghanaians can identify with. The NPP must build on its electoral success in this 2016 elections in all the 10 regions to shed its image of being an Akan party and work to show it is a party with a ten big enough for all Ghanaians with equal standing.
God bless Oman Ghana.

1) LOSS OF CONFIDENCE in government - ue to unfulfilled promises and lies about things getting better when they obviously are getting harder.
2)ECONOMIC HARDSHIP & POVERTY- Most voters have moved from where they first registered as voters and needed to travel in order to vote. A large number of these voters especially those affiliated with the NDC did not see why the NDC will deserve such a sacrifice from them.

Bogus analysis in respect of the low voter turnout. First, we do you assume that the low turn out represented actual living or qualified persons on the register, when there were hues and cries aboit the register not being credible before the elections? Couldn't it be that these ghosts or alien voters simply failed to show up for fear or other reasons? Second, assuming but not admitting that those who did not turn out were real and qualified voters isn't their refusal to turn up form of protest? If so, what makes you think that they would have voted for the NDC if they showed up? Could they not have voted for the NPP in protest also?

Whiles I agree with the writer in many respects, I think the point on the so called lower turn out is questionable. It cannot be true that a third world country like Ghana with a population of some 25m could have a voter register of 15m. There was obvious over bloating of the register which the NDC with the connivance of the EC objected to it being cleaned. If we are to have a proper voters register one could see that the 2016 voter turn out was extremely high. It was an election that voters went out to vote with so much determination and apostolic gusto. The perpetual over-bloating of the register had in the past enabled NDC to cook figures on the ballot accounting sheets and collation sheets in their stronghold. This time around the bold stand of the supporters of the NPP made it impossible for NDC to cook those figures and that was why they lost by that wide margin. They have always lost elections but for the cooking of figures. Let us wait and have the National Identification fully done, link it up with a new voters register and see what the number on the voters register would be before we conclude that this years election turn out was low in NDC stronghold. It is not. The actual voters there voted in their numbers. The only thing that was different this time was that the NDC could no cook the figures due to the vigilance of our supporters in the NDC stronghold. Is somebody telling me that one out of 2 voters in Fiifi Kwarteys constituency did not vote? That cannot be true. The actual voters there voted. The only thing is that the NDC in that constituency have always had field days to do their election gymnastics by cooking the figures there. This accounts for the seemingly lower NDC figures of some 60k as against 120k recorded in 2012.

Very refreshing to see a DATA-based post-election analysis.
However, this analytical breakdown is still missing a key component: what was on the MINDS of the voters as they cast their ballots.
To get such data requires SURVEYS -- using questionnaires.
The first thing to find out is HOW people voted. That is, what thought process influenced their choice -- whether FOR a candidate or AGAINST another candidate. (There are always 4 mental approaches voting: FOR candidate A, AGAINST candidate A, FOR candidate B, AGAINST candidate B).
Next, the survey can ask people the most important factor that determined their decision.
The survey can also ascertain the factors by which voters rejected particular candidates.
Post-election analyses should be based on DATA, and not just personal opinions, if they are to be valid and useful.

What are they coming to power again to do? P/NDC has rule us for 27 years almost half the years after independence and have shown they are the real impediment in our countries development.

ALL THE HUGE HUGE FIGURES YOU SEE FOR NDC IN 2012 WERE RIGGED. THAT IS WHY WHEN THE NPP BECAME VERY VIGILANT IN 2016 THEY COULD NOT ACHIEVE THOSE FIGURES
