There is no doubt in mind that Ghana is a third world country that is on the brink. The reason why there is so much corruption is that the prisons are viewed as a place where people go and die or where people return and die. The condition in the prisons in Ghana is inhumane and inhospitable. Relatives of criminals will do whatever they could to prevent their loved one from being sent to prison because being sent to prison in Ghana is more or less a death sentence. This phenomenon has contributed to judges not being strict with regard to sentencing. In addition, the inhospitable nature of the prisons in Ghana has contributed to judges being very corrupt. Desperate relatives are willing to pay bribe to judges so as to avoid the "death sentence" for their relatives. In Ghana people go to prison, and they don't return. They die. Or they return very sick. In Ghana prisoners do not have access to basic health care. Think of it, if ordinary people who are not in prison are struggling to have access to basic health care, how do you expect prisoners to be given adequate health care? Ghana is a fucking third world country.

A prison is not a 5 star hotel. They have to toil and sweat to feed themselves. NDC inmates will soon be fed on the same amount. Very soon they will be pleading for plasma TVs and air-conditioned cells.

Prisons in Ghana and Africa in general are hells on earth.They are not meant to reform but only to punish.How on earth can a prisoner be fed in Ghana with GHC1.80?Prisons in Ghana are overcrowded,filthy and disease-ridden.FOOD GIVEN TO THEM IS TASTELESS,NON-NUTRITIOUS AND INADEQUATE.No wonder so many prisoners are released carrying diseases they did not go there with.If the government feels that the prison population is so big for it to spend money on it should find other means of dispensing justice to criminals found guilty in the courts. Community sentences, tagging for minor offences and more financial penalties can be used to reduce prison population in the country.Sentencing guidelines should be given to judges and magistrates to reduce the number of crimes that attract custodial sentences.Serious not cosmetic prison reforms are needed in Ghana to reduce the prison population to enable the government to adequately care for prisoners.Prisoners are human beings and eventually they get released back into the society.They must not be treated as pariahs and semi-human beings.They should be well cared for in prison.The ball is in the court of the government.

The mark of any civilised society is how well we treat our disadvantaged i.e. the Mentally and physically disabled, the sick and poor as well our incarcerated brethren. Adequate food ration and improved jail facilities closer to the prisoners home Districts or Regions should also be aspired for! Who knows, maybe, 1 District 1 Prison will be a great aim. Maintenance Allowances in huge arears and not likely to be paid. Poor accommodation to the extend that, Senior Officers sharing rooms with Junior officers. Officers properties damaged by rain on their varrenders. What is good for the goose is equally good for the gander. The Prison Officers should be treated well for them to be able to treat the prisoners well. The new government shouod trh and pay our hospital bills that in huge arrears.
