It's a welcome decision President Mahama has made not to contest the presidency in 2020. That the NDC has so humiliatingly lost both the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections must be placed squarely at his feet because of some of his wrong policy decisions. Of those unfortunate. decisions, two were paramount. Firstly, as soon as he and the NDC won the 2012 elections, the President asked all his predecessor President Mills' appointees to tender in their resignations whom he quickly replaced with overwhelmingly Northerners. I'm not sure if this is accurate, but Prof. Adei, former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) has claimed that Northerners constituted 86% of the President's appointees.

Why President Mahama's failure to maintain a sense of regional balance in his appointments came back to haunt him and the NDC is that he seemed to have forgotten that he won the elections only because eight of the ten regions, and not only the three Northern Regions, had voted for him and the NDC. So, it was very unwise and unreasonable on his part to appoint such a large number of Northerners into almost all the most important positions in government and public service. Why Ghanaians resented this was that these were people who came from nowhere and had relatively little or no work experiences. This was basically why the NPP especially labelled the Mahama administration and the President himself 'incompetent'. To them the 'dumsor' phenomenon, for example, was one proof of the administration's incompetence. Indeed, it was this negative feeling of the Akans for the Northerners that the NPP deliberately bypassed the late former Vice-President Aliu Mahama for the now President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo for the NPP flagbearership position at the end of the Kufuor administration.

While President Mahama was making those heavily Northerner-oriented appointments, the NDC leadership kept quiet and did not warn him to be fair and to consider regional balance in his appointments. To the contrary, some argued that the President must be allowed free hand in appointing those he felt comfortable working with, just as former President Kufuor of the NPP did. Indeed, during his administration, Mr. Kufuor appointed overwhelmingly Asantes to positions in both the civil and public services. When he was asked why he did so, his response was that the Asantes had heavily voted for him during the elections and therefore it was appropriate for him to do so.

Yes, Kufuor may have done that and got away with it, but Ghanaians do not generally vote on issues when it comes to elections; ethnicity is more important to them. Akans, especially Asantes, tend to look down upon others, but especially on our brothers and sisters from the North and to see that they were being ruled by those Northerners who tended to be their servants and slaves, since both the President and his majority key office holders are mostly from the North, their pride is seriously hurt. This is one major reason they voted against President Mahama and his party. And the NDC leadership must be held responsible for that. That some among the NDC leadership are still urging President Mahama to stand again in 2020 simply means that they have not got it. I strongly believe that Mahama will lose again if the NDC presents him as its presidential candidate.

Another reason why President Mahama and the NDC lost the elections is that while the citizenry as a whole were crying aloud about the severe economic and financial hardships in the country, the Prescient and the NDC seemed oblivious to all that by increasing or even imposing some new taxes as recently as 2015. At the same time, they announced the withdrawal of teacher trainee and nurses' educational allowances in spite of the strong and loud protests from those students.

Then, as pointed out, there was the severe problem of the erratic electricity and water supplies throughout the length and breadth of the country, what came to be known as 'dumsor'. It is basically because of the inability of the Mahama-led administration to solve this problem quickly and efficiently that he and his administration were accused of being incompetent.

For the above-referenced reasons and others not mentioned here because of lack of space and time, if President Mahama says he will not contest the presidency again in 2020, he must be allowed to go in peace. The simple truth is that he will lose again if he does.

Ndc is only healthy in its toes, that is Volta region but the toes does not harbour any vital organs so it cannot help the body(NDC).

Is Mahama a loser? Lets remind ourselves of who President Mahama is in political circles:

If with these political achievements of JD Mahama are referred to as failures and he as a loser then all Ghanaians are losers including the president-elect. All humans have their weaknesses but the strengths are worth protraying and only using the weaknesses as a guide for improvement. The main reasons why Ghana is not developing fast is twin.
1. We constantly look down on our own while projecting foreign values or if we turn to Ghana,we are inward looking based on ethnicity, grandious delusions(as cover up)or nepothesm. Mainly due to inferiority complex.
2. Ghanaians generally are ungrateful. When one works to breaking point whether in politics, public service, religion (except fake miracles) and even in the family circles the majority of Ghanaians are not interested in the 99 good things done but rather the one little failure amongst the lot. This state of affairs is getting worse by the day among the youth and the real (not the concocted future the corrupt media or fake religous potray) future of Ghana is blick. So what can be done?
First appreciate yourself and double, tripple or even quadruple your positives while working to improve ones weaknesses.
Second once you can appreciate your own self, it only then that you can appreciate others. It is only in a society where people are appreciated and have the sense of belonginess that the society's needs are met. Even if NDC members are only 44% as the votes of President Mahama got and these people are despised and attacked, that creats a sense of not belonging which retards our common progress. How much effort will a disillusioned person put at his/her work place?
Well remember that Ghana may never have another president like Mahama whether his good side or his bad side. Whether Ghanaians wants to remember the good side which will motivate us or hammer the bad which will discourage us the ball is in our court. What ever decision Mahama takes it must be respected but remember it is is long way down to 2020.
