Having had the chance to review this incidence, the fact that Oko breached protocol by approaching and speaking to someone walking on a red carpet is totally lost on the generality of the uninformed public, journalists and those of you commenting. JJ, being aware of such a breach, reacted the only way he seems to know best when his first effort to avert it by just nodding at Oko failed, temperamentally. He could have grunted, "Oko, I am on the red carpet" and Oko would have taken the hint and back off.

Yes, it was Oko who started the whole embarrassing spectacle but I have to also blame JJ's aides for creating the space for it. The car bringing JJ should have stopped at the beginning of the red carpet and JJ made to start walking from the beginning of the red carpet, thus giving the occasion the formality that it deserves. A Police usher in ceremonial garb smartly marching each diplomatic red carpet guest to the door of Parliament would have been in order. That would have sent a signal to Oko too to stay away. That too would have given colour to the ceremony. I hope this is taken into account at tomorrow's inauguration. We don't want another gaffe trying to imitate white people.

I think Oko needs to say sorry to JJ for causing the embarrassment. But JJ too should learn not to say "fuu-fuu" when another elder flatulates.

The AMA Chief seriously breached protocol when he attempted to exchange pleasantries with the former President. It is a serious offence for the AMA boss to approach JJ on the red carpet.

Ethically JJ would have committed diplomatic blooper if he had responded to the AMA Boss. Critical examination of the tape, you noticed that in the first attempt by the AMA Boss to greet, JJ responded with the head and moved on.

But unrepentant AMA Boss moved on again more aggressively to attract the attention of JJ. It was wrong. Our officials need to understand these protocols and international diplomatic ethics.
JJ’s gesture was to ward off the diplomatic intruder.

Presidential Red Carpet Ethics are different from Celebrity Red Carpet ethics.
Celebrities normally do not observe any ethical standards when walking on the red carpet.
But Presidents and Government Officials on Red Carpet need to observe protocol – norms of Red Carpet.

Governance is protocol ( the official procedure or system of rules governing affairs of state or diplomatic occasions) and protocol is the etiquette (the customary code of polite behaviour in society or among members of a particular profession or group) of ceremonial functions.

In the affairs of official state functions, the collection of dignitaries, the location of National flags and national colours, ushering in of dignitaries, red carpets, sitting arrangements, and order of procession are strictly governed by rules and procedures.

A breach of such protocols either result in public embarrassment, international ridicule, and at times the wrath and swift response of national security. In some cases, it may end the offender in detention.
For the purpose of this article, I shall limit myself to the protocols of red carpets in official State functions. The red carpet is traditionally used to mark the route taken by heads of States on ceremonial and official occasions, and also extended to heads of missions on some official occasions.

The general rule of red carpet is that, when the designated person steps out of the car on the red carpet (aside the other in between arrangements), the accompanying members walk about two meters behind the designated person taking to his left hand side.
Taking a critical examination of the trending video of H.E. Jerry Rawlings and Oko Vanderpuje, one will notice that, the accompanying members of Jerry Rawlings understood the protocol governing the official red carpet. The three accompanying members were at about few meters behind, taking to the left hand side of Rawlings due to the open environment.

H.E. Jerry Rawlings was jolted by a movement on his right hand side. He stopped and was greeted with a profuse genuflection from Oko Vanderpuje. Though startled by the breach in protocol, there was a nodding of head to respond to the genuflection. He continued his walk upwards, Mr Oko Vanderpuye completely oblivious of the breach in protocol continued in step with the former President.

This is an unpardonable ignorance and breach of protocol which knowing the temperament Jerry Rawlings, he will not countenance. He had to order Oko Vanderpuje to step out of step, and out of sync.

Unfortunately, the ignorance of the protocol that surrounds red carpet and official State functions rose to its highest apogy with so much vituperation on the former President. The media in their ignorance and lazy journalistic work, rubbed it in with headlines that suggested a snub. What a disgrace? ??

I will rather ask my elder brother Oko Vanderpuje to send a note of apology for causing embarrassment to the former President. It his choice though.
