If I were Koku Anyidoho, I would use the next four years to upgrade my skills so that if my party returns to power I can be considered for some serious position like the babies with sharp teeth instead of continuously making ugly noices from the background in an effort to be noticed. Education is the key. Take a cue from Omane Boamah, Fiifi Kwettey, Okudzeto Ablakwa, Kwaky-Ofosu, Baba Jammal et al.

He should also minimize his intake of whatever is making him so hyper all the time. And finally he should remember that the next four years and possible the next forty years will be painful for him in particular as his "father" Atta-Mills (may his soul rest in peace) is not around to soak it to him whilst they are in opposition.

Let me begin by finding or understanding what plagiarism and intertextuality mean in the lame man way. Plagiarism is defined as the act or practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own. Plagiarism always come in mind when working on project work/thesis, want to publish or journal, etc. Intertextuality is the shaping of a text's meaning by another text. Intertextual figures include: allusion, quotation, calques, translation, etc. A complex use of intertextuality is considered a sophisticated tool in writing. Rather than referencing phrases from other works, a refined use of intertextuality involves drawing upon an ideology, a concept, or even rhetoric from others. Thus, you may explore the political ideology in your story by drawing upon the current rhetoric in politics. Alternatively, you may use a text source and explore it further. Where a writer deems fit, he/she may use quotation marks to demarcate the quoted text from the original or as I suggest will weave it seamlessly into the fabric of the newer text by merging the old and new text, ( Fairclough, 1992).

On the other side of plagiarism, the copyright law of USA tries to encourage the creation of art and culture by rewarding authors and artists with a set of exclusive rights and those rights are subjected to a time limit, and general expires 70yrs after the author's death. Woodrow Wilson first made that statement in September 1919, and he died in 1924. That was why Prez Bush used it in 2001 and he didn't acknowledged or make any reference to him, per the laws of copyright.
Now, base on these researches, courtesy by Wikipedia, its clear NDC don't read; no wonder Vice Prez Bawumia said it. In anyway that they will try to make their arguments loud, the centre can not hold. NDC, learn from your past mistakes so that you can be a responsible opposition party for at least two decades. We need "better and bread" issues, issues which will put food on the table of the ordinary Ghanaian and that is what the ordinary Ghanaian wants from you. Thank you.

I wonder how and why Ghanaians are given overwhelming ears to H.E Nana Addo Danquah's speech as plagiarism. The speech wasn't plagiarized, as it's been over 70years since the death of the original speech deliverer (Woodrow Wilson, died 1924), and even if the original author of the speech was still alive, the speech could have became a public domain, meaning anybody can choose to use it as he or she wants without giving credit to the one that created it. The original speech was delivered in 1913 so what's the point of calling it a plagiarism.
George Bush used it and didn't give any credit because the laws governing copyright has made that speech a public domain. Bill Clinton did equally the same without given any credit due to the same laws of academic copyright. Therefore, why and how are you tagging H.E Nana Addo Danquah for plagiarism.
If you are ever given a platform so say something about H.E Nana Addo Danquah, kindly try to do your homework or background checks and balances before writing subject of this nature that has laws abiding what one can do and cannot do.
And more so, I will rather advise that you, Koku Anyidoho should apologize to the NDC supporters and Ghanaians as a whole for lying to them that NDC's John Mahama (our ex-president) was in a comfortable lead during the election era when you knew for sure that NDC was in a comfortable rearmost in the presidential race.

Intertextuality vs. plagiarism: the case of the speech of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, president of the republic of Ghana

I have received a number of queries in my inbox regarding the President Nana Akufo-Addo’s speech on his historic inauguration. Some have accused of him of outright plagiarism because he used portions of President’s G.W. Bush’s inaugural speech without acknowledging him.

I posit in this short paper that Nana did not plagiarise. What he did in this great speech was to weave cleverly into his text intertextual references from other sources to give credence to how he thinks politics should be conducted.

To begin with let’s define plagiarism. Plagiarism is defined as: “the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own”.

On the other hand, intertextuality according to Selzer (1993) refers to the recognisable “borrowing” of words or phrases from another source. According to Kristerva (1986), intertextuality is the construction of a text as a “mosaic of quotations” that absorbs and transforms other texts.

Fairclough (1992), defines intertextuality as the texts that are full of snatches of other texts. These snatches may be explicitly demarcated or merged in and which the text may assimilate, contradict and ironically echo or even contradict.

Wikipedia, referring to several sources, states that Intertextuality is a literary device that creates an 'interrelationship between texts' and generates related understanding in separate works ("Intertextuality", 2015). These references are made to influence the reader and add layers of depth to a text, based on the readers' prior knowledge and understanding. Intertextuality is a literary discourse strategy (Gadavanij, n.d.).

The thrust of the discourse of intertextuality, as Wikipedia expands, is that it does not require citing or referencing punctuation (such as quotation marks) and is often mistaken for plagiarism (Ivanic, 1998).

I argue here that the discursive practice of speech writing gives license to a writer to freely use intertextual references. Where a writer deems fit, he may use quotation marks to demarcate (Fairclough 1992) the quoted text from the original or as I suggest will weave it seamlessly into the fabric of the newer text by merging (Fairclough 1992) the old and new text.

The rationale for not always referring to the authorship of a previous text is that no text is original. Every text is a reworking of a previous text. In other words, no text exists in isolation. In addition, some linguists argue that it will be tedious to read a text like the speech genre when at every turn one has to refer to its source.

The president used several sources in his text and where he deemed rhetorically and socially appropriate referred to their sources. But as a mark of a good speaker, he also integrated into the text of his speech sources which he did not ostensibly acknowledge for a mellifluous flow of the delivery.

Those who are ferreting for mistakes in this great speech although none so exist, I say you, you have sinned against Nana than he has sinned!
