In any case instead of government providing a house it might be better to give an agreed sum to them so they do whatever with it. Many past presidents have own houses anyway. In that case you don't have to replace if burned done or be responsible for maintenance. I think whole package has to be reviewed and revised.

The house was renovated and provided with upgraded security systems at state expense which he is still benefitting from. He has a new palatial mansion in the Aburi mountains and one in Kumasi. His kids bought state bungalows at very reduced prices in some prime areas in Ghana as their residences. Which begs the question as to why he would need another house at government expense. How many homes can one person live in? and at 75? Does the state provided home revert to the state when the former president dies?
It is just greed and sheer avarice.This whole system of free homes for former presidents is ill conceived and and stupid and should be scrapped. This is public service and when your time is up, pack and go to where you came from. You don't deserve a house for life any more than any other public servant. These guys steal enough money in office to buy private islands and do not deserve a thing. Fuck em!

Kuffour, to be honest with you , Ghana simply does not have the luxury to provide any President who leaves office with a house. I know you guys who have had the privilege to occupy the highest office of the land, did not seek to change that provision because you considered it as a good thing and a bonanza for you and your family. I agree totally with you Hon. Kuffour, that Mahama has the right to choose where he wants to live, however, not at our expense. Mr. Mahama has been a Vice President and a TWO term as the President of Ghana. My question to Mr. Mahama is, for all those years as Vice President and President, what did he do with his "fat" pay checks?
For him to turn to Ghanaians to give one of the State's owned buildings to him for free simply because he was a former President is an insult to our sense of reason and very irresponsible of him to have the audacity to request for that.

Don't give houses to any ex president but can only build them an office 2 cross country vehicles non renewable for them to service it themselves,that's all cos if each president is going to take one state bungalow each after their tenure of office it will get to a time when all governments bungalows will be exhausted n diverted to ex presidents.
1)Look at British prime minister was he given accommodation ?
2)Was George Brush given any accommodation?
3)Barack Obama is he not going back to his Ohio residence?

Why can't we shake off the colonial mentality? How is it that people who can afford are living on government largesse? Didn't Kuffour and Mahama apply for their job as president? How different is that from a journalist, for example, applying to a media house for a job? If a journalist cannot ask for
a house when he/she retires, why should the presdent? Don't tell me this is a case of
apples and oranges; I'm talking about a person applying for a job they feel they
are capable of handling. Why should the employer reward you over and above what is fair? Why can't teachers ask for houses upon retirement? Don't they serve the state?

We get it all wrong when we encourage this kind of attitude. The colonialists did that because they were exploiters. We cannot/should not exploit ourselves. The president is like any other civil servant, working to ensure the progress of the nation. :-)
