Though copyright law provides a creator with several critical and powerful rights over their work, those rights are not unlimited. The law has always recognized the need to balance the rights of the copyright holder with the good of the public and provisions in the law have aimed to do exactly that.
Here are some of the critical ways in which your copyright is limited:
Expiration
One of the most obvious and important limitations to copyright is that it is not perpetual and expires after a set amount of time. The length of a copyright on work created during or after 1978 is the life of the author plus seventy years. For works of corporate authorship, the term is 95 years from date of publication or 120 years from date of creation, whichever is shorter.
When a copyright expires, the work falls into the public domain. In the public domain, the work is considered to be a part of our cultural heritage and is not subject to any copyright limitations. This means that anyone can exploit a work for both commercial and non-commercial gain.
Copyright holders do have the ability to place works into the public domain themselves, the Creative Commons organization offers a license to do just that, but once that step is taken, it can not be undone.

Really this is a storm in a tea cup,that act was was done for an award or grading in world politics,president Obama came here and adviced us to creat stronger institutions not personalities,this I believe has been said by many people in the past but he did not credit anybody besides borrowing few words from world leaders as former presidents without acknowledging them can be forgiven after all the president did not write the speech himself.The NDC can hold on to this for now because the seriously ve no job to do now,but I assure them they ll get busy soon on corruption charges,it's better to steal speeches than steal the money of a poor nation like Ghana.Demanding a state property has more economic implications than few words borrowed from another country like US who drive and inspire democracy of many countries including Ghana.Who said the west did not borrow the views and copied some ideas from our first president Dr Kwame Nkrumah?just give us a break Npp has work to do period.

The issue was an error but my interest is more in that since CNN's goof what articles gave been published on the future of Ghana, if AA plans will help transform the country, if Ghana's electorate has shown that politically Ghana is maturing and what this means for governance.....but no ....waiting for a negative issue to jump on and again not focusing on the broader issues. Will this plagiarism impact Ghana's economy, the bAlance of trade, Ghanaians employment.

Ghanaians should not mistake CNN's intentions. The only trick they learnt from their last goof is this time is to use a Ghanaian writer albeit one who doesn't even live in the country.

Mind you, Akuffo Addo's campaign was premised on incompetence of the immediate past administration.Therefore,the measure of competence is significant in his maiden speech. Besides,the coloured have always argued that they are up to such standards to which the occasion of the speech was one rare instance to show the standards. Note that, we are able to meet the standards via education where plagiarism is not pardoned; especially when the speaker is taunted as one with some fine brains. In fact, our forefathers are disgraced for fighting the inferiority wars:inferior not only in colour but words, wisdom and capacity. Where is the competence-chariot that gave you victory? The easiest conclusion is that leadership and governance are to be plagiarized since the main maiden speech, from which all 'visions' and progress are signaled was shamefully plagiarized- an exercise that trashes the coloured without repair. Indeed, the ghosts of our liberators are once awaken in shock. I am much pretty sure the coloured is worth putting together a well coordinated text which reflects our peculiarities. In all of the circumstances,I suggest a withdrawal of the speech as will have been the case in the academia(note that the event itself was academic);and to treat the whole event as an activity of a committee of Parliament to be ratified, at least, to ameliorate the effect on the Presidency.

As an academic myself, plagiarism is more of an issue in the quest of academic pursuit and peer-reviewed publications. Its importance in politics and industry is less severe. The Chinese are doing a great job being copycats while Ghanaians have just been hanging on to the vestiges of inventions and other radical innovations. Let the president be and go cry yourself a river.
